2021 Draft Thread

Moving on and also back to sitting in judgement of Clarke and FJ for the next generation...
Although the Bolton and Graham picks were stellar, we all know that we need 3 drafts of gold. Just one good year is not a pass, even if it was a top year.

We also have Balta and such a strong supporting cast under age 22, so we can be very bullish. The jury is still out on the young mids, they'll get their chances this year.

Here's hoping we hit the key forward and gun inside mid we need and then we're away

Let's face it, it is damned difficult to assess draftees at the best of times. With the last 2 years seeing junior footy and VFL being severely disrupted this must be one of the hardest drafts to pick players from.

I reckon we will see even more busts and even more players being a big surprise than usual.

Thought it might be nice to bring some accountability to both Frank & Clarke's strategies and I've tried to document all the opportunities for discusssion and some sort of intellectual debate about list building. But I'm pretty much tired of it now so I might just exit the building for awhile. I left last time because you lot caned me over talking about trading a future first, now I'm just a fantasist playing make believe. I get it now, not worth the hassle, check you later.

Geez Bully. All for debate over footy (nothing personal) and we certainly don't need to kowtow to the club. Leysy certainly hasn't over the years.

Simply mentioned the players you suggested have done nothing as yet and we shouldn't be concerned for overlooking them, especially in a draft we didn't have picks in.

Bullus, not sure I've seen anyone caning you or being unreasonable. Part of debating is being challenged. I haven't seen anything that's been out of line with how that's being done. If you have, report it for me. I'll take another look in the AM.
I don't think you can have a say about something and not expect others to question your opinion though. It be a pretty boring site if everyone just had their say and you weren't allowed to question it or disagree with it.
I have followed the post draft posts and I suspect bulliss's frustration is not from the debate, its not from being challenged, it's just from the petty nitpicking that some can't help indulging in.
Pretty much everyone can see the value added from bulliss and he was sorely missed for a few years from this site owing to EXACTLY THIS SAME BEHAVIOR!
Common courtesy to a respected poster shouldn't be that hard.

This all feels so familiar. SO MANY posters have specially thanks Bulliss for his contribution this offseason and part of being on a forum with a strong opinion is being challenged through debate. That is not nit picking or unreasonable.

We're all friends here and just having robust discussion about the club we love.

Threatening to leave the forum all together because you don't like how the conversation is going is way over the top but I understand people needing to put their mental health first.

Bully - I don't know how you don't suffer from contribution exhaustion! I'd need a break if I did a quarter of the work you have over the last 2-3 months. Enjoy the summer, take in some rays and hit the beach. You'll feel much better in the Autumn.

There’s a difference between having opinions and debating this and that v anyone (and I mean anyone) taking it so seriously to the point of thinking they’re an actual recruiter for Richmond and/or recruiting and making decisions on behalf of all of PRE and getting all worked up as a result. Relax. It’s just a bit of fun.

As others have stated, we’re all just a bunch of internet nerds with only a pifteenth of knowledge and information on these kids compared to what the genuine experts in club land have. In many cases those guys have been following these kids, know their families etc since they were 12. They have strategic priorities and reasonings that for the better part, none of us will never ever really be privy too.

Otherwise, this is playland so no need to be over invested. We’re all just observers to things, having fun by casting opinions and debate and the odd inside tidbit from way back in the bleachers - which is a better place to be anyway coz you can go and buy a hot dog and beer from there. Speaking of which…lunchtime. Chicken schnitzel wrap I’m thinking.

This Rowville Sports Academy is interesting. I played golf with a young kid about 12 months ago who was going through their golf program. Amazing what they teach these kids, the specialists etc they have working with them. Specific training and education relevant to their sport, skills development, mental training etc. A host of things. Even media training !

Quite interesting.

Totally unbalanced.
Gotta call this stuff out. Geezzz.
Chicken schnitz is a fine Friday lunch but to take it in wrap is not on. Too slow.
In my humble opinion of course.
What are you pairing it with?

Hmmm. Good point. Really should be chicken schnitzel with gravy and chips I suppose. Thanks for setting me straight. Dunno what I was thinking. (y)

The recruiting team have to consider a lot more than just the individual 18 year old v another individual 18 year old.

There is the structure of the 1) positional wise 2) age wise
What positions are we weak in? Which players will be retiring in the next 2/3 years?
Then the salary cap. Can't just grab everyone so need some players who will be paid to be foot soldiers. Also need to factor in increasing contracts for the younger players against the older contracts decreasing.
Then what is the game plan and what type of players do we need?

On scouting they need to follow and map performance of what? 500 kids over under 12s under14s under 16s and under 18s as well as track older players not taken in drafts and maturing in senior comps

Then come up with a plan that on average will, at best, be a 50% success rate

Imagine being Miller 15 years ago trying to do that all by himself

Top combo.
With those choices you can't be beaten in the middle.

Only one disagreement is on salary cap concerns. No way does a club draft a lower ranked player so they can pay the kid less.

Yeah worded badly. Trying to say recruiting a bunch of kids on minimal contract $ can alleviate salary cap pressures

Greg Miller would have struggled with the recruiting side of things, but would have known not to put a chicken schnitty in a wrap.

Miller knew you can’t have chicken without chicken shyte.
But he wasn’t expecting a whole truckload of it

Hey 17, 95% of what you said I agree with.
I'd contrast the "nitpicking" of Bullus' posts, with the nitpicking that gets done by an array of folks about the clubs drafting. I think there's a degree of, "passing judgement over others abilities" that opens you up to the same level of judgement.
I really like Bullus' posts and passion, and hope he hangs around. But judge not lest ye be judged.
That said, the part I disagree with you most, in a nitpicking kind of way is the section above. I'm sure you didn't intend it to read this way, but...
Common courtesy to EVERY poster should be expected.
It doesn't really matter if you or I think they're valuable or not. Someone else may. We may get new folks who are shy or intimidated by over zealousness and quit before we find out they're a "valued" contributor. We also can't see if someone isn't struggling emotionally behind that screen or phone.
For those that break the site rules, just report them and don't get drawn in.
If they just annoy but stay within the rules, use the new two way ignore function.
Everyone should be able to co-exist here happily.

I'm also not sold on the wrap idea at all. Just brings down the whole CS experience IMHO. Fresh white bread, mayo, iceberg lettuce, salt and pepper are where its at. If you really feel the need to get millenial, I'm OK with some avocado.
