2017 VFL GRAND FINAL

Was starkly evident from going to the footy two days in a row that Etihad is a very distant second fiddle to the MCG.

I work next door to it and that's bad enough. It looks like a haunted house with that closed roof.

For *smile* sakes how the *smile* did we lose that? 13 points up and we *smile* the bed.

Winning it would've given the seniors some confidence no doubt.

*smile*' hell. The curse remains.

Maggots were horrible.

Yeah how bad was that dropped mark on the wing. Bounced off his hands like concrete.

Taylor Hunt O.M.G.

How much of the game did you actually watch? Never mind, you know footy.

:clap

What kept us in the game was our relentless defence.

Beasley, Batchelor (close to BOG) and Garthwaite had very good games.

Ellis (also close to BOG), Bolton, Markov, Lloyd and Miles were all good.

No doubt Miles will be in some demand from other clubs and wouldn't surprise if Port make enquiries re: Markov.

Lennon had an average game but he has had a very good season - though likely not enough to keep him on the list.

Can't quite work out Menadue, was good in parts but is so inconsistent and has been here and there throughout the year. Moore had a so/so game but has otherwise had some very good games in recent times and is worth developing further.

The Chol experiment was worth the effort but hasn't worked out, others such as Hunt, Morris, Conca will not be missed.

Elton and Soldo didn't play and surely Elton won't be anywhere near our list next season.

Griffiths - not sure what we do here. If we can keep him on the cheap then good for back up but we need to get serious about a 2nd KPF. Riewoldt isn't going to be around forever.

Cialis was the only class player and is number one to take Cotchin's spot of he is outed. Was he rested for the last quarter??

Disappointing but let's be realistic, we outperformed in the reserves this year and had a great finals campaign. Have to remember that standalone VFL sides have a lot more stability over a season as players don't get ripped out of the team on a regular basis to play AFL. Great year Tiges, hold your heads high.

Yep.

We had ten players 21 or younger, Port had just a couple. While the loss hurts, I've got to give credit to the Burraghs, they played well.

Port just seem so much stronger and in some cases physically more mature and battle hardened. They were definitely the better team on the day. What now for guys like Lennon, Hunt, Morris and Batch. How old is Morris anyway? God, he was great in the finals series.

I thought Hampson was very good, apart from one terrible dropped mark.
UnFortunately Griff was a disappointment.
Some merit in playing an extra tall next week.....Jacobs is very good and Ottens likely or Jenkins to ruck as well.
Would allow Nank to go forward.
If Ellis is suspended, just a possibility as we have six backs anyway.
I have not been a Hampson fan but he was otherwise dominant.
The other thought, was whether Towner is better than Lloyd as a forward pocket....not sure about this.
I expect no changes but these two are conceivable.

I agree and thats the league we play in. Stand alone sides tend to be older and stronger as they try and bring in the best VFL players. The AFL seconds generally get 1-2 of the best VFL players but then supplement that with AFL players, a lot who are either average at AFL level or who are very young and developing (though skillwise are probably better than the VFL standard players).

We needed to beat them with skill but unfortunately our skills on the day were not good enough.

Yep. I have noticed that about standalone sides. I do think they are very important to the comp.

Reece Conca looked slow and the game was too fast for him.

Now is the the time to trade. Last year of any perceived value.

Most of the young blokes had moments. Should never have lost it but a outstanding year of development.

I'm with you on this, T-Love.
Richmond VFL team did a mighty job to make the GF. Actually, probably, should have won the match, but lost their composure and way in the last five or so minutes.
And like some other posters have suggested, I hope Cotchin had a quiet chat to the boys and reminded them of what the feeling is like after losing a BIG game.
There will be a lot of the list hurting tonight for having stumbled at the last hurdle, but I am of the belief that this should further motivate the senior team in the big dance.
Making the GF is absolutely fabulous, yet losing the premiership in the last game is an ache that won't ever go away ... for players and supporters.

Why not just have a 10 team AFL Seconds comp?

Make the VFL the genuine second tier Comp as it was for so long? Remake it around the traditional and current VFA sides Port, Willy, Werribee, Frankston, Sandringham, Coburg? then add the new suburbs like Casey, Melton, Craifdiburn and a couple more max 12. Current 14 teams is too many, weird fixturing etc.

Saw the afl players stunned look on their faces. Stark warning, take nothing for granted for the big game. Hope they absorbed and learnt. No fancy crap and make everything count.

VFL team, hold their heads high. Game could've gone either way. Not disgraced and proud of their efforts. So, so close but no cigar.

Disappointing to be 13 points up so late in the game and lose it. The chances were there but did not take them. After Griffith goal we should have tried to slow down the game and kill time. Seemed to me there was a lack of leadership and experience. So sad that the more senior players like Hunt Morris and Maria were poor on the day.

I'm here with CC, taz, easy, snake, Tooheys, and caesar, waiting for that lazy bludger Dyer'ere to grace us with his presence. Carn!

A good afternoon lads in spite of a very disappointing result at the end.

Main positives today IMO were C Ellis(best), Lloyd, Hampson (Snr matchup?), Garthwaite, Menadue & Bolton who was electric early.
Not so good were Conca, Chol, Morris & Lennon.

Port were very good for much of the day. Ball movement was superb at times and they refused to go away.
Thought they showed a lot of heart and deserved their win. Our team should be very proud of what they achieved this year under Fly. So close but not quite.

Been a joy to watch the VFL team for much of this year.
Many positives to take from player development & some exciting times ahead.

Poor structure , simply too tall..
Hence losing to a far less talented team with a much better structure and team ethic
Basically the same as Richmond gws
