MATCH REPORT
by Panthera tigris FC
After a disappointing loss against the Blues in Round 21, the Tigers resisted the opportunity to rest players against the bottom of the table Giants and took them on at full strength. In our only other encounter against GWS we won a scrappy affair in the wet by a couple of goals in 2012. With a percentage boost on the line the Tigers had no excuses and with a final series a fortnight away they really needed to send a message.
In the first quarter the Giants held firm and kicked the first goal. The play was generally pretty scrappy, with the Brogan controlling the ruck and giving his young midfielders first crack at most of the stoppages. When the Giants kicked the first goal of the match after the Tigers had missed some early opportunities it felt like there could actually be a contest on. A few late goals however settled the nerves and the Tigers went into the first break with a small lead.
Everything changed in the second quarter as Maric started to dominate the ruck, scoring clearance after clearance off his own boot and the Giants defense buckled under the pressure. The Tigers had a quarter to remember, kicking 11.5 to 0.1 and put the contest to rest. The Giants were absolutely dominated as Martin and Maric combined to put them to the sword with plenty of help from their Tiger teammates, not least of all Aaron Edwards who has grabbed that forward spot from McGuane with 5 goals. The 80 point margin at halftime was the equal second highest in the Tigers' history (thanks L2R2R!) and I thought it would be interesting to see how the Tigers would play in the second half with the game well and truly secure.
As it turns out the Tigers never quite reached the heights of that second quarter, but were dominant nonetheless. The young brigade was great again, with Conca continuing his weekly improvement, Ellis showing real class and Vickery proving dangerous. 4 goals to 3 in the 3rd quarter and 6 goals to 0 in the final saw the Tigers run away to a huge 121 point win. The sad part is that they didn't receive too many kudos as they did what was expected. I was very happy to see them put in a good 4 quarter effort and get the job done.
In the voting this week Dusty has again stolen the lead back from Lids and the tussle will come down to the wire, with the award now Martin's to lose. We can't count Deledio out though and Cotchin is still within striking distance with the final game to come. It was good to big Maric rack up good votes this week, something he hasn't done often enough this year. His haul has seen him move up to a more respectable 14th position. Conca's midfield work and ability to convert on the scoreboard saw him feature heavily and Rance's ability to keep the dangerous Cameron goalless for the first time this season secured him plenty of votes.
The Tigers now have an interesting final H&A match against the penalised Bombers. Which Essendon side is going to show up? A defeated side, or one with something to prove. My feeling is the latter, but we'll find out tomorrow night. A win would see us up against Carlton, North Melbourne or Brisbane in an elimination final. For me, I'd take any of those, although I would fear the Kangaroos more than the others. A loss could see us play Port (if the Pies win this week), which may be preferable, but I don't think toying with winning form is a good idea this close to the finals.
This will be the last report until after the finals. The Awards Thread where the players' reports and final standings will be revealed will appear sometime in the next month and the Essendon report will be featured at the end of that. I'll see you then!
