MATCH REPORT
by Dyer'ere
sh!thouse day
It was at Churchill's (named after, Clive, not Winston, they say) that I told Mr X that I thought we could get the money. That I liked our form and thought Sydney might take us lightly. He nodded with his usual pessimism. We buried our schooies and headed out to the bus.
A text from the Gyps ^ you coming to the game? ^
^ five ^
^ see you at gate D ^
Some kind of SNAFU when we got there so Gyps had to pass our tickets through the turnstile and then we couldn't get in through that gate. We had to go through one 150m away from our seats and then push through the crowd all the way around the ground. Muscles and Lonners walking the other way. (No Astbury – good. He may be a late in.)
Mr X and I found our slots nest to the Gyps and Miss Toothbright just in time to watch Axel squander a shot from the square.
The Gyps was keyed up. “We've jumped em. They haven't seen us coming and then Foley turns gold to sh!t.”
From the time we arrived Sydney consistently outplayed us. They were too tough, too busy. They slaughtered us at the fall and controlled the air forward of half back. They were regimented and relentless.
The game was very loose. Fast and free. Collisions were sporadic and the consequences vital. Chaplin bungled a couple of times. It catches everyone out. Things were not going our way but we hung in due to some fine play from Martin who was the powerful individual of the quarter.
There was this strange phenomenon. Sydney fans clapped our goals. Never seen that before.
Five goals apiece at quarter time. We had to shut down the second quarter or we'd be playing in a forty goal game with only twelve of our own.
The second quarter gave us what we needed, some stability, even though we were under the pump. We did have some control and looked ok for a revival towards the end of the half.
We were still getting slaughtered at the fall but we regained some poise and looked dangerous on the counter.
At half time Mr X was pessimistic. The Gyps was edgy. Miss Toothbright was bubbling quietly. She's not much of a student.
Outside for a smoke Mr X and I engaged with two travelling Tiges. Both pretty hammered so not much converstation. They made a contrast to the genteel Swan fans. So polite. The game is obviously for toffs up here.
The third quarter began with the Swans just destroying us everywhere. What was unfolding was a huge class gap between the two sides. Their judgement was better and their execution precise. The game was tight but the Sydneysiders were able to break it. Over and again.
The ball wouldn't sit for us. We kept getting lost and even stopped running at times. We were too short. Looked lazy. Sometimes overawed.
We'd held a lot of their good players but our stars were only two - Riewoldt and Martin. Meanwhile O'Keefe, K. Jack and even Mumford were too good for us. Jesse White looked like a champion with unpressured delivery and a midget opponent.
Painful game.
With Tuck subbed we lost Vickery in the final quarter. (The Sydney crowd applauded him off.) And then Petterd had to play full forward with a torn calf or hammie.
The twenty minutes of the game gave us nothing to sing about. The Swans were a cut above.
On the bus back to Churchill's Mrr X was solemn, Miss Toothbright subdued and the Gyps and I a bit stunned. He and I agreed that the best thing about the game was how sh!thouse we were and that we had almost certainly seen the premier. Astbury should've played.
We had the fish n chips back at the pub. Some Guinness. The fish was not in great shape. Neither were we.
I came down with the flu on the drive back home. Tore a pec sneezing FFS so I've been paying for that ever since. I felt a bit sorry for Petterd. Poor bastard gets fed to a monster then gets another soft tissue injury.
What I am grateful for is the price I'm getting about us against Hawthorn. It's punting time.

Cheers to the great Dyer'ere for this week's report!
Although we were comprehensively beaten by a better side in Sydney on their home turf there were some positives to take from the game. The voters recognised the continued good form of Dusty as he was clearly voted the best Tiger afield. He has been very good this season and has now surpassed Lids to take top spot in this poll. Clearly contract negotiations aren't too much of a distraction! Jack was also back to his dangerous self and looked like our only real avenue to goal for much of the day and Cotchin continues to keep on keepin' on. It would appear that a few of our key players are slowly building towards the business end of the season, now we just need the injury gods to be kind.
Today's game against the Hawks looks like it should be a good one. It is a very wintery morning in Melbourne, damp and cold. Perfect footy weather for two sides that both have something to prove this week. Richmond need to respond to last week's loss and the Hawks will be out for revenge after we upset them last year. Should be a ripper.
Carn' the Tiges!
