MATCH REPORT
by SkillzThatKillz
Going back 1 year, Round 16, 2012, was by far the worst I have ever felt being a Richmond supporter. It wasn’t just the fact that a win in that infamous game against the Gold Coast Suns would have kept our 2012 finals chances alive, or the fact that the Suns had been winless all year with a poor percentage, it was the way in which we lost the game…yes…that after-the-siren-goal slotted by a rugby league convert by the name of Karmichael Hunt who would probably only get a starting 22 gig at the Dee’s in 2013 if not for the commercial purposes of his AFL signing.
That moment was forever scribed in the annals of the short history of the Suns as their most amazing achievement at that point in time. I will never forget the shock, disbelief and then complete and utter disappointment felt after watching that game live – for me, it was the worst moment in Richmond’s recent history.
What made the loss even worse, was the next day when I went to work, which I'm sure many of those reading this report experienced also. The amount of crap I had to put up with from fellow workmates giving it to me for the loss against Gold Coast was like twisting the knife K. Hunt stuck in my heart and twisting it around and around –and I still copped it until the end of the season – not cool…I just about tear up when I think about it (seriously!)…anyhow, we do our best to move on…
Coming into Round 16, 2013, the Tigers had a 9-5 record, with a likelihood of playing finals for the first time in a long time and in a better position than they were a year ago. A win against the Suns would almost ensure Richmond of playing finals this season. Another game against Gold Coast - another massive game in the context of the season – and…Hunt wasn’t playing….
It was both a windy and rainy day in Cairns. Watching the match preview on Foxtel live made a depressing start for Richmond fans with no less than 4 replays of that Karmichael Hunt goal…
The first quarter got off to a bad start with Gold Coast kicking the first goal of the game via Harley Bennell, however Matthew Arnott kicked a good goal shortly after to register the Tigers first for the day.
Of interest was that Daniel Jackson was tagging Gary Ablett, with both Steve Morris and Brett Deledio chopping him out when the great man moved forward and back. A cause for concern was that young Gold Coast ruckman Tom Nicholls was getting the better of Ivan Maric in the ruck contests and doing more in general over the ground. Goals to Shaw and Day moved the Suns to a 3.3.21 to 1.3.9 lead at quarter time.
Gold Coast young gun Jaeger O’Meara was the first to goal in the 2nd qtr giving the Suns a 3 goal lead in poor conditions – it wasn’t looking good for the Tiges unfortunately, however they kicked the next 3 goals up to half time through, Jackson, Foley and Brandon Ellis, who has kicked some very nice goals this year. Richmond actually dominated the 2nd qtr of this game but missed too many shots at goal to capitalise on their dominating play in wet conditions. Half time score GC 4.2.28 to RFC 4.10.34
It was hard to believe for me that Jackson was doing a great job on the little master Ablett and more importantly had actually kicked a goal himself. Ablett didn’t have any influence on the game at all in the 3rd qtr.
Only 2 goals were kicked in the 3rd qtr, one to McKenzie for the Suns, and the other to Jackson, yes Jackson again! 3 qtr time score was 43-36 in Richmond’s favour.
The nerves were really setting in for me at the start of the 4th qtr, however when Jack Riewoldt kicked his first and only goal in the last qtr, the score was 53-37 Richmond’s way and a small sense of relief set in until Campbell Brown goaled in the 21st minute bringing the Suns within 10 points which brought forth some nervous minutes of footy. Richmond were able to hold on to win by 9 points winning 6.17.53 to 6.8.44 with a poor conversion rate for goal.
The positives for me begin with a win of course, however I liked Chaplin playing as the spare man in defence – he carved up from down back and IMO fits in perfectly in our line up in defence, Cotchin was solid, Arnott promising once again, didn’t mind Petterd’s game down back either. Martin and Morris good too.
Positive for Gold Coast is that Tom Nicholls is the goods.
Daniel Jackson BOG for me – he kept Ablett honest all game, helping to keep him to 26 possessions and 0 goals. Jackson himself had 24 touches and 2 goals to his name, and was the only multiple goal kicker in a low scoring game. In his career best form this year.
The negatives for me were that the game was very unattractive to watch and overall I thought we didn’t play well but the win of course more than makes up for this.
So now the Tigers have a 10-5 record and play Freo on Sunday at the ‘G’, who we lost to by a point courtesy of a Hayden Ballantyne goal when we played them out west earlier in the year. We have a great chance at beating them here at home with them missing Ballantyne, Pavlich and some other players from their best 22. Looks like it will be wet weather conditions as well so the Gold Coast game should be good practice for us.
11-5 anyone?? An ugly win or not, I’d take it.

Cheers to Skillz for a great summary of an ordinary match (as a spectator). As he said though, we'll take the win and get the Gold Coast hoodoo off our back.
The voters agreed with Skillz assessment, awarding Jacko BOG for his shutdown role on Gary Ablett and his impact on the scoreboard. Martin continued his solid season and was prominent in the voting and Chaplin's loose man in defence role saw him just pip Petterd for 3rd place this week.
We now enter a 3 week period that will define our season. Games against Freo, Sydney and Hawthorn will determine whether we, again, push for top 4 or scramble to hold our position in the 8. I am most confident against a depleted Freo in their first appearance at the 'G this season, although our best (and biggest) wins of 2012 came against the eventual Grand Finalists. It should make for some interesting footy and really set the boys up for a tilt at September for the first time since 2001.
Carn' the Tiges!
