MATCH REPORT

A New Hope.
The preseason is long. For us, the length is unfortunately multiplied by the amount of years without September action, making it a winter of discontent indeed. Ironic it occurs over Summer.
In 2010, commentators of the game had us pencilled in as one of the worst teams to take the field. Ever.
A 'Special circumstances' pick was mooted, and flatly rejected by the men we have entrusted with the 'vision' for our club. Benny called their bluff.
2011 and 2012 saw gradual improvement in ALL aspects of our club; list, coaching, admin, and facilities. So, not without reason, 2013 is the year we are expected to seriously contend for a spot in the 8. Everything has been tracking on target, the boys trained well throughout the summer, and played well in the NAB, while incurring no injuries to the list. A new recruit in Chaplin providing the BIG defender we were deemed to have lacked.
Never mind the 'premature expectation' fears on PRE, never mind the media's favourite past time and proven paper seller of building up the Tigers for failure. The club; coach, players and executive alike, have stated their intentions.
So finally Thursday night rolls around in Melbourne town, and I say, Let it begin!
Not the sham in Sydney, or the interlopers in Adelaide, the REAL thing. The first game of the season in Melbourne. Richmond V Carlton. Media had it pegged as Mick's first game in charge, a massive hoodoo game for the Tiges.
I must admit, I was nervous. This first game of the season against Carlton, has taken on a 'monkey-on-the-back' status the size of King Kong . However, I did have a chat with one of the players during the week, and he was remarkably calm and confident that the outcome would be a win for Richmond. I made him promise. Twice.
I love pre game drinks and banter in Swan St. I love the irritation I feel when I see Carlton supporters walking our streets. I love the craic with your fellow Tigers. The little kids in the club colours. The slow trek to the 'G. It all enforces the fact that footy's back, and I love it.
Of course, being an away game means it's pot luck as to where you sit, and true to form, I am surrounded by that sub-species of Carlton supporter who also wear Ferrari caps and speak in a strange dialect, that prefaces everything with 'o'my'god' and, 'Isweardagod'. So the usual jibes of 'Thanks AFL for gifting us 4 points to start the season' begin. Didn't notice Carlton running out . Didn't care. But when the Tigers ran out, led by Cotch for the first time, my heart rate started to pick up. Even though the selection committee was largely maligned by the PRE collective, this was the team that they had chosen, for better or for worse.
So, our season begins. For the first 10 minutes it looks and feels horribly familiar. A period of play capped off by the now familiar sight of Murphy running unmanned to the goal square and nonchalantly slotting through a gift.
Then the nerves settle….a composed short pass from new recruit Chaplin to Jackson who with a well thought out hand ball, puts Lids into space and produces a lovely running goal from 55 out. The Richmond faithful find their collective voice. A big piece of the puzzle falls into place when Ty Vickery marks and goals. Quarter time, and scores are level, albeit with us playing the better football. Conversion still a problem.
The Reveal.
15 seconds into the second Ty marks and goals. The levee breaks. Richmond play scintillating football, smashing Carlton in the clearances, contested and loose ball, moving the ball with precision at will. Goals to Bash, a great goal to Reece, another to Ty, Luke and Jakey, and a absolute cracker to Dusty before half time make it 7 great goals to 1 contentious one for the quarter. Richmond are in control, and have gained it by playing some great football. The Richmond crowd was on its feet, and even though it was a Carlton home game, we seemed to out number them. They had gone very, very, very quiet.
The 3rd quarter saw Judd keep them in it, with two late goals to us for a change keeping it at 36 points to the good. My one thought, and I'm sure it was shared by all Tiger supporters, was surely we can't lose it from here. Mild elation.
We all know what happens in the final term. We win!
What stood out for me was the all round improvement in the team, but in particular some players who have just reached the point in their playing careers when they can really develop into the solid contributors they should be. A great comeback game from Ty Vickery. An excellent game from Reece Conca, who took some of the clearance heat off Cotch, and it's been said before, but Shane Edwards' hands in the midfield were nothing short of sublime. He's growing with the teams understanding of his clearance abilities. They say this comes with experience, but it also comes with belief. The players are starting to believe . . We won. We're learning how to win!
As Richmond supporters we've been sold the vision of many, that has turned into the stuff of nightmares all to often.
This year pride will be restored. I volunteered to write up round 1, because I knew we would win, a win tempered by the fact it could have been a greater win. But, Swan St. was rocking to the 'Yellow'n'black', the Tigers are back!
There really is a new hope.

Welcome back all. For a change we actually get to bask in the glory of a round 1 victory. A victory that was almost gifted back to blue scum in the dying moments, but a victory nonetheless. It was great to see a huge crowd for round 1 and even better to see the large passages of play where the Tigers dominated Carlton.
Thanks for all of the offers to provide match reports. Eat the rich has started with a great summary of the game.
In the voting, 83 PREnders cast their ballot and it turned into a real 3-way race, with Deledio finishing just ahead of Cotchin and Vickery. It is great to see this trio featuring prominently, with Deledio looking elite in the midfield and kicking goals outside 50, Cotchin, industrious as ever in the midfield and probably would have taken the win if not for some lacklustre disposal at times and Vickery showing some great signs and impact on the scoreboard.
Tonight sees the Tigers take on the Saints at the 'G for some Friday night footy action. Hopefully, we can continue with our good form and bury our St Kilda hoodoo (or is that voodoo?) once and for all!
Carn' the Tiges!
