MATCH REPORT
by TigerMoz
With an 8 point game on the table it was important for the boys to follow up on the talk about consistent pressure football being the benchmark now. We all know that whatever happened against West Coast cannot be an aberration.
Q1
After a couple of soft frees to the Crows early the game settled nicely in the Tigers favour. We played the game on our terms with Lids running free behind the ball and good skills shown by the boys despite wet conditions.
On the back of some sloppy work by the Crows Cotch kicks his first goal of the year with a snap off the left and with two each to Jack and Dusty we led at the first change 5.2.32 to 2.1.13
Stand out aspects:
1. Great tackling pressure from the Tiges.
2. No complaining to the umps despite questionable decisions (which evened up as the game went on)
3. Flossy copped a big knock causing some grimace but just got up and got on with it
Q2
If the first quarter was good the second started even better with seven inside 50s before the Crows could manage to get in there. The Tiges midfield and backline simply made their opposition look pedestrian. After the Tiges went out to a 34 point lead the Crows managed to peg it back to 20 points before the Tiges steadied again to lead at half time by 27 points - 9.7.61 v 5.4.34
Stand out aspects:
1. Jack is becoming the complete player. He assists a lot of goals and has excellent tackling pressure.
2. The boys rarely just bomb it forward anymore.
3. Bachur has made some great spoils and been really solid defensively.
4. Astbury made a courageous spoil getting crunched (and eventually subbed)
5. Ellis kicks 2 great goals.
6. Scores from turnovers – Tiges 6.5.41 Crows 2.2.14
Q3
Sanderson finally realises he has to tag Deledio which certainly slowed his possession rate down but their forward entries were no better. Jackson went to Dangerfield. A bit of an arm wrestle quarter and Adelaide had 17 inside 50s for 1.6 to Richmond’s 13 for 2.3.
Stand out aspects:
1. Grigg kicks a super dropkick goal.
2. Crows win the contested possession by +16
3. Crows continue to butcher the ball while the Tiges pressure remains strong.
Q4
The 4th quarter opens up with an immediate Crow goal putting them within 4 straight kicks of the Tiges and when Vickory misses a gettable shot a few moments later then I wonder if the Crows will do what they did last year and run over the top of us. Moments later Van Berlo puts another through to bring the lead back to just 19 points.
But alas no; Mighty Maric kicks a super goal out of the ruck outplaying Jacobs in what must have sent shudders down the spine of all Crow supporters. Shortly after Lids makes a great release off the backline linking up with Whitey who sets up ‘Push Up’ directly in front 10 metres out. Soon after the Tiges break the game open getting up to a 50 point lead with 4 minutes to go before a couple of late goals brings it back to an eventual 38 point win. A courageous effort by the Tiges and it was great to see them play with a lot of poise today.
Final score: Tigers 16.14.110 Crows 10.12.72
Best:
The entire backline, Lids, Martin, Riewoldt, Maric, Jacko (unsung hero)

With the draw opening up in the coming rounds, the Tigers needed a win over the mid-table Crows and secured it with aplomb, improving their record to 7-4 at the halfway mark of the season. The PRE voters again rewarded Deledio for his masterclass off the half back line, almost gifted to him by Sanderson leaving him as loose man in defence for much of the first half. A strange tactic given Deledio's proven skill in that position and his (reportedly) difficulty dealing with a tag. Either way, Deledio is now dominating the PREmier Fighting Tiger award, almost 200 votes clear of Martin in second position.
Speaking of Martin, his ability to kick the freak goals saw him also rack up votes this week with 4 goals instrumental in the Tigers win. It was truly a thing of beauty when Jack kept that ball alive and Dusty snapped it from the boundary to secure an important goal for the Tigers. It is strange to still see Dusty criticised in some quarters as the PRE crowd have him comfortably the second best player at Tigerland this season.
Finally, Bachar Houli kept on keeping on, with another solid display in defence. His kicking again proved damaging as he launched numerous attacks (along with Lids and Newman). He has been very consistent this season and an important part of our backline.
The Tigers now face the Dogs under the roof at Etihad on Saturday night. In a game we should win, the Tigers need to ensure they keep the hard ball winners in check and repeat the dose they dished up to the Bullies earlier this season!
Carn' the Tiges!
