" Classy Tigers dump Eagles out of Eight"....Tuesday's headline in' The West Australian'.
Patersons Stadium was bathed in sunshine when we arrived for our twilight game against WCE. Unfortunately, Tiger supporters were well and truly camouflaged against the hordes of Weagles seemingly wearing our sacred colours. Since when did the Eagle's blue become the new black?
Luckily in our section behind the goals, virtually everyone was a real Tiger supporter. For me, it is one of the great joys in life to sit among passionate one-eyed Richmond supporters for a few hours. Everyone was very excited. Good vibes were in the air as we all expected the Tiges to rebound after their pathetic performance against the Bombers. (In retrospect, "the loss we had to have!").
There was no breeze and the ground looked perfect as Cotchin led the boys out. Aaron Edwards looked like a school kid having a kick at lunchtime as they warmed up - no doubt in my mind that he was going to seize this opportunity to play seriously well against his old club.
The game started badly with our backline rather shaky and the Eagles looking too tall and too strong. We were tackling desperately, but nerves were evident and the game was very scrappy. The ridiculous Eagles supporters were screaming for frees every two seconds, but fortunately, for once, the umpires refrained from blowing their whistles. Subiaco is a huge ground and both teams were playing a crowded game. At any given moment, 36 players were crammed into about one quarter of the ground. The Eagles were excelling at the "spread and run" approach to goal, Nic Nat was killing us in the ruck, but luckily Kennedy was missing goals. Gradually our backline settled. Rance was fearless in attacking the ball and sure footed around the boundaries. There was a real sense of cohesion down back. Meanwhile, it looked a shambles in the Tiger forward line until Matty White and Shane Edwards goaled to give us a respectable score at quarter time.
The Tiges were on fire in the second quarter, with our gun recruit, Nick Vlastuin, igniting the mid-field. Lids and Foley seemed to be roving the Natanui and Cox hit-outs, giving us some centre clearances. Jack had two defenders on him, so he acted as a decoy, leaving Flossy, Newy, Whitey, Jakey and friends to slot successive goals. Our forward structure finally looked balanced. Tiges led by nearly five goals at half-time and the Tiger Army were delirious!
Tiger history and recent memories warned us all not to celebrate too early. In the third quarter, the game became more free flowing and this suited the speedy Tiges. We increased our lead with three quick goals and despite a mini comeback from Josh Hill and Jack Darling, the momentum changed again when we put a loose man in defence and Big Vic goaled. The game started to get a bit messy as both teams were tiring. Fresh man, Sam Lonergan, was good around the packs and our loyal workhorse, Jacko, scored a freaky, long goal giving the Tigers a 50 point lead at three quarter time.
Jack gave us the start we wanted with the first goal in the final quarter. The atmosphere around the ground became subdued. Weagle supporters left in droves. I've never seen anything quite like it.......The Tiger Army responded with a emotional rendition of "Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Hey, GOODBYE". The Aaron Edwards tackle and goal were magnificent and it looked as though every Tiger player came to congratulate him. He belongs!!
Unfortunately, we did not really bury the Eagles. Jake King was hobbling, Jack was limping, Ivan was spent and poor old Shane Edwards was on the sidelines with a patch on his eye. We reverted to random handballing and both teams were fumbling. The Eagles scored the last three goals, including one on the siren. That hurt! But by then, there were only the jubilant Tiger supporters there to join in our great song......"Oh we're from Tigerland........!"
I highly recommend a trip to Perth to watch the Tiges at Subi. We had a great time.

Thanks for the eyewitness report from happytige, who made the journey to watch a great game out west. I was still up north, watching the game in the warmer climes of Byron Bay. I had a great night at the Beach Hotel, with the staff nice enough to set up a Tiger viewing area in the TAB section of the bar (once I informed them that there was a game of AFL on!). So, with plenty of beer and a few Victorians in tow we were able to enjoy our best night of footy for the season!
It was a close run thing in the voting this week with Deledio continuing his excellent season and consolidating his lead in this award with a BOG performance. The votes were certainly split and for good reason, with the Tigers playing the best 'team football' that we've seen from them all year. Vlastuin goes from strength to strength and was only just pipped by Lids in the polls. His goals in the second quarter ignited the side and his poise and run were critical in establishing our lead. He is appearing more and more to be an inspired selection by the Tigers recruiters and is now clearly second favourite in the Rising Star award (after the shoe-in, O"Meara). Finally, a special mention to Matty White who, arguably, played his best game in the yellow and black. His early long goal got the Tigers rolling and his ability to link up and break the lines was very important in setting up the win. It was a standard that he will need to maintain as pressure for spots in the side will ramp up with the return of Conca and Ellis from injury in the near future.
I hope you all enjoy your Bye week. Feel free to bathe in the love of the McBean thread if you are ever feeling down. I look forward to the Crows game next week, as they will be smarting after their heavy loss to Sydney this week.
Carn' the Tiges!
