MATCH REPORT
by Judge Smailes

A glorious Adelaide day greeted me as I poked my head out the back door on Saturday morning in anticipation of another epic day at the footy. A quick check of the Bureau of Met website confirmed that my beloved Tigers would take on the Power in a balmy 25 degrees, with the chance of rain just 30% - eerily similar to the effective disposal percentage of ex- Tiger recruit Jordan McMahon. With that I headed to the wardrobe and decided I would bite the bullet and don the shorts for the day, accompanied by the 2012 Brad Helbig signed run out top – hoping the angry Tiger on the front would intimidate any Port fan willing to take me on when the game got tight.

A swift 10 minute walk from my abode to the home of the local Tigers – Glenelg – and it was time to wait for the bus that would take me and my mate Sanga (a Crows supporter by trade, but always willing to watch some footy and share a few beers, admirable traits indeed) to the climes of West Lakes. A little irritated that I didn’t have time to attend the pre- game function with Flea and the boys (I have a wife and kids, so compromise is king) I stood at the bus stop with Sanga and a family of Tiger supporters. Twenty long minutes passed (in which time two buses should have been and gone), during which plenty of fans turned up, ready to crush into the bus Tokyo style for fear that no more may turn up and any pre-game beverages would be forfeited.

It only took a few steps onto the bus when my Tiger top caught a Port fans eye. “Yor gunner loos maaayte!” said a crusty looking Power supporter, to which I politely replied “we’ll see mate” as Sanga and I took our standing spots on the packed bus. Then it started. One dude, let’s say possibly a “few snags short of the full barbie”, started quoting crowd numbers. “26 fousand, one hunnert firty too” he shouted. “Vat’s how many Port got last week against West Coast”. “26 fousand, one hunnert firty too!” he exclaimed once again, in case the people right at the back of the bus didn’t hear. “24 fousand six hunnert eighty four is all Crows got against Bulldogs in round four!” he shouted next. “Port got more”. Wow! I thought, this Crows/Power thing is taken to bizarre levels, this dude even competing in random crowd size stats - that is some hard core sh*t! I felt like jumping in and telling him that the Crows had around 37,000 against Hawthorn, but quickly remembered where I was and kept it shut. Anyway, this went on for the entire trip there, crowd stats reeled off between random people actually talking about the footy.

Sanga and I hopped off the bus and headed straight for the “checkside tavern” where we would meet up with Sanga’s brother and a couple of other mates, Emu and Deano. Deano, a passionate Tiger like myself, had flown over from Melbourne in what was becoming a semi-regular ritual, famously started in Round 10 of 2010, when an 0-9 Richmond outfit flew into Adelaide on a brutal winters day and left as winners defeating Port 77-30 in a mammoth upset. This game was a memorable one for me, even though most of the footy played was fairly forgettable. My most vivid memories on that day were the massive spray of water that was kicked up every time a player slid in to get the footy, and of myself and Deano dancing up and down the Footy Park aisles in pouring rain shouting “NAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!” after the diminutive forward nailed a couple of handy sausage rolls. Some starters for Richmond on that day less than 3 years ago – Angus Graham, Graham Polak, Ben Cousins, Andrew Collins, Ben Nason, Richard Tambling, Mitch Farmer, Jeromey Webberly. Still think we haven’t made progress from those days?

Onto the game at hand, and after a few calming ales it was out into the sun to see how this thing would unfold. Good news straight away as the ugly but effective clash jumper with extra mustard was being donned by our visiting Tiges. The Big “O” lined up in the middle, and the VFL stalwart wasted no time in getting his hands on the footy. “No Cotchin no Richmond!” a Port supporter yelled, and despite my disgust at such a call, I must admit that in the back of mind I hoped rather than knew this to be true… Just a couple of minutes in and JR8 banged the first through for the Tigers, and that was all Deano required – “should have got your money on at two sixty, Jackie gonna dominate today!” he screamed. The Tiger intensity looked good early, fierce tackling that was as warming to the heart as the sun was to the top of my head. Tucky banged a second through and a 12 point early lead had the beer tasting good. Port finally got it forward and a soft free kick to Robbie Gray for a high tackle gave them their first goal. Jack had his second and things were looking good as Lids and Dusty were running around like unregistered dogs. Or unregistered Tigers? Port got their second through a Jay Schulz flop that Matty Lloyd would have been proud of, and the blood vessels in my neck started to expand. Our boys had dominated but a couple of soft frees had the lead back to just seven. If that wasn’t enough, my anger was about to rise to Joe Pesci type levels as a Port player – I think Robbie Gray – ran out of defense, took on a Tiger opponent and was tackled from behind. Gray dropped the ball. To recap: 1. Port player had the ball. 2. Prior opportunity – Port player tried to dodge a Tiger 3. Incorrect disposal – Port player dropped the ball. OK, I’m pretty sure this would be ON THE DVD as holding the ball. We all screamed it, Port fans all knew it – but the umpire called play on. Unbefreakinlievable.

Anyway, the Tigers went ballistic after that, Nahas kicked a gift, Kingy banged one through, Jack kicked a checkside party trick and Chrissy Newman banged through a sweet goal as the party continued. Mixed in there was Nicky Vlastuin’s first AFL goal as the boys got around him to celebrate. A fantastic first quarter saw the boys bang on 8.2 to the umpires, err Port, 2.1. The “O” show was well and truly smashing it in the ruck, and as a first look at the big man I was pretty impressed, despite a Gus Busesque turnover mixed in there. Nahas worked hard on his tackling which was good to see, while Vlasty and Ellis had me looking to celebrate their potential with a quarter time ale.

The second quarter was a strange one as neither team managed a goal for the first nine minutes. One thing that stood out was the Tigers ability to get loose – so many outside marks were taken with little or no pressure from the Power. Jake Neade was being pushed off the ball like a Chihuahua taking on a Pit Bull and it made me wonder how this guy had racked up so many stats this season. Our much maligned but beautifully spoken Dan Jackson was completely towelling up Hamish Hartlett in a dominating performance, while Kingy was providing plenty of highlights with some lowlights thrown in. Newy hit up Jack on a diving catch and the Tiges drew first blood at the 10 minute mark of quarter two while Deano reminded the Port crowd that umpires have been shafting our Tigers for 33 years. Port kicked a couple after a spinning Stewart mark and a jag of goal from Any Moore before the tragedy of the day occurred. A sweet left foot sausage roll from the White Knight before he grabbed his knee that was not where it was supposed to be. Aaaaaaaaaaaargh. Just as this bloke was looking like our x-factor he is done for the season. To our boys credit, we played possession footy for a couple of minutes as cool heads prevailed (yeah, really) so as not to let the Power back in it. A charitable donation from Power skipper Travis Boak gifted Jacko the pill which he coolly delivered to McGuane, who in turn payed it forward to Dusty for the simplest of goals before half time. Tiges with a 7 goal lead at the half, and enjoyable half time beers ahead! The half time discussion was related to who had the worst footy jumper of all time? This started as a Port guy came up to us with this shocker from a few years back, mainly grey with teal vertical stripes diminishing in size, and a big red vodaphone badge.(Badge not show here)

(Blech.)

I argued that the worst of all time had to be the Hawthorn harlequin pre-season special, but I guess this mystery will be discussed by smarter people than me for decades to come…

(Cover your eyes!!!)

Back to the footy, and as Schulz kicked the first two of the second half, Deano remarked “if we didn’t give you Schulzy you blokes wouldn’t have a chance!” as for the first time in the game the Power actually looked like the better side. This rubbish luckily didn’t last long as big Ivan got involved, sneaking one out to Kingy who goaled again between Port misses up the other end. Lids was absolutely tearing it up, those beautiful trademark runs up the guts warming the hearts of the Tiger faithful as he flipped the virtual bird at Robert Walls with a B.O.G performance. Grigg snuck in for a goal as I surmised that maybe he rubbed stealth liniment on himself before each game as opposition players just don’t seem to be able to see him out on the park. As if to put an exclamation mark on my theory, Griggy drifted in again to mark and goal for his second. Like Geelong had done to us so successfully just a week before, our boys managed to squeeze one more goal inside the last minute as a strong McGuane mark led to a 50 point lead at three quarter time. I was feeling pretty good about things as I made my way down to the bar to lubricate the tonsils in preparation for some serious renditions of Tigerland in about 30 minutes time. The only concern now, apart from that of Knights, was the fact that Tucky had been running around for about 20 minutes with his arm hanging by his side. Despite heading off the field and coming back on, something clearly wasn’t right with the veteran as he winced in pain every time contact was made with his arm…

Port banged through three goals to start the last and I thought the footy gods must have been conspiring to teach me a lesson for thinking too far ahead. It seems like a cruel joke that Tiger fans can’t just enjoy a big lead without having some sort of scare put up them, just when you think you are safe. No matter though as Newy bobbed up for a mark and goal which would surely be enough? Jack followed up by banging through number five with the margin once again out beyond 40 points, as even some of the Port faithful realised there would be no miracle comeback today. A jag off leg break to that Mitchell dude with the girly hair brought it back by 6 points, but Kingy had the last laugh with number 18 for the good guys as the siren sounded for a most tasty 41 point victory.

Queue the best damn song in the universe ‘cos it is time to sing baby!!!

Post Game:
Something strange occurred after the boys disappeared into the catacombs of Footy Park – after clapping the lads off from behind the fence, and calling out “hey Jack, I just called 1-800-fat-bastard and Mark Maclure answered, do you have any messages for him?”, a sharply dressed Mark McVeigh made his way past Deano and I, as his boundary riding duties were complete for the day. Deano, buoyed by the Tigers sweet victory decided to call McVeigh over. “Hey Spike!” he yelled. I always assumed that McVeigh would be a bit of a tool, possibly just because of the colour of the sash he used to wear, but a view I held nonetheless. Anyway, McVeigh comes over and says “hey fellas, how’s it going?” Deano replies with “how about those Tiges mate?” For the next five minutes, Deano, McVeigh and I have a conversation about the Tigers (he praises the new regime), the Bombers (he is fearful for his mates amongst the ASADA scandal) and footy in general. In those 5 minutes my perception of McVeigh changes dramatically. He seems genuinely interested in just talking footy with a couple of blokes who love their team and the game, and seems in no hurry to pack up for the day, instead engaging in solid footy banter. Hats off to you sir.

Back into the checkside tavern for what is a great Adelaide ritual – many people I don’t know, all standing around in their black and gold sharing a few brews and singing “Tigerland” on repeat until I realise it is time to go before I lose my leave pass for this great day next season.

As we make our way to the back car park (Dixo’s boy wants a few kicks of the footy), a couple of blokes wander behind us in Tiger shorts and polos, by themselves. I recognise these guys as Steve Morris, and 100 gamer Luke McGuane. Normally, I wouldn’t walk up and annoy blokes who have just busted their proverbials over 100 minutes of footy, but that is where the magic of beer and winning comes in. I wander over, shake the boys hands, thank them for making the day sensational with a win and of course congratulate McGuane on his 100. My mate Dixo, always the thinker, bounces up with his phone and says “mind if I get a shot with Boris?” “Yeah, no worries” is the reply.

How can you not love a day at the footy???

EDITORIAL

Wow. Another week, another cracking report for a cracking Tiger victory. Thanks to the Judge for such a sterling effort.

In the voting this week our stand-in captain put on a clinic and was duly rewarded, cleaning up the lion's share of the 3 votes and catapulting himself to the number 1 spot on the leaderboard. Not to be outdone, Dusty also polled very well and has kept things tight in this year's race. It is great to see a close contest this year as our 3 midfield guns in Lids, Dusty and Cotch vie for the honours. Finally, Jakey King managed to secure the 3rd highest number of votes in a close call, with a number of other players featuring prominently, in Edwards, Ellis, the Big O and Jackson.

This week sees us take on the dismal Dees and we should really aim for a percentage boost. As a Tiger supporter I know such a statement is fraught with danger, but they are playing horribly and we should really bury them.

Thanks to PRE I'll enjoying the action from the Tiger Cage....many thanks to all for the nominations and to Rosy for arranging it all. I look forward to catching up with some fellow PREnders on the day!

Carn' the Tiges!
