THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY (A Spaghetti Western)
After a deflating loss to the Pies how would the Tigers respond? A tough trip to the west to face our bogey man Ross Lyon and his purple daze. How would Deledio go with the Crowley tag? Who would step up and help the chimp win contested ball with the "resting" of Tuck? Was richmonds greatest love machine really that hard at its toughest? (have a look at the replay of his attempted mark with 3.32 left in the game - question answered).
The Tigers started well, were winning the contested ball and using it well and were rewarded with an early 20-0 lead with early goals to Grigg, McGuane and Reiwoldt. The dockers responded with a lucky goal to Mayne after a smother rebounded into his path and a Walters goal after some poor checking allowed the dockers to go from deep in defence to a shot from 30 without a tigers touch. The tigers got the last 2 of the quarter (knights proving he had not lost his kicking ability) and the 20 point lead was restored.
The 2nd quarter saw the tigers play some recidivist football. Leading the way was Alex Rance - poor free kicks, poor disposal, poor composure. Goals from free kicks to Mayne & Walters were followed by a goal to Hill after a shocking Vickery pass resulted in a turnover and the dockers were in front. Would the tigers crumble or show some fight? Thankfully the tigers did not turn it up, despite the dominant I50 count to the dockers. The teams traded goals, Knights goaled for the tigers but Rance followed a dropped a chest mark with a clumsy in the back lead to a Ballantyne goal. Vickery followed with a goal from a mark then Rance completed his virtuoso quarter - he took a good contested defensive mark and immediatley played on - despite not knowing what lay in front of him. He kicked back into the middle, straight to Zac dawson who got it to Ballantyne - goal. Deflating. The positive was we were only 2 points down.
Better players for the half were Cotchin, Houli, Martin, Knights, Ellis, Vickery and Edwards. Deledio was struggling with the Crowley tag whilst Reiwoldt couldn't get clear of McPharlin. Vlastuin was quiet in numbers but fierce at the ball in his 2013 debut whilst Helbig was quiet (played out of position?). The chimp suffered an ankle injury just before the half-time siren that sent a scare through our living room.
The 3rd quarter was more arm wrestling with the dockers scoring 3 goals to 2 to extend their lead. The tigers were lucky not to be further behind with Walters missing a shot after the siren from another tigers turnover, this time Jacko having a brain fade. There were no real highlights, the lowlight was the chimp missing a very gettable set shot. No bananas for you Trent.
The last quarter was a great contest (albeit not laden with quality football). The dockers extended the lead to 14 points with about 14 minutes remaining before a Martin beauty from the boundary line and a Vickery mark and goal reduced it to under a goal with 6 minutes to play. Leigh Matthews made a good point about Vickery. Said he would be frustrating to coach as when he goes at the footy he looks really dangerous. He should be going at the ball like they are the only one who wants it he said if he could do that he would double the amount of marks he would take. I hope this gets back to Ty. Matty White kicked 2 goals that only counted for 7 points and the tigers were in front with 2 minutes to go. Yada yada yada we all know the rest.
The Good - the tigers came to play and the effort could not be questioned.
The Bad - fail to hold a lead late in the game
The Ugly - ironically, Alex Rance

Cheers to Soda for an entertaining summary of what was a frustrating loss to Freo. It's those sorts of games that will determine our chances of finals this year and we have to learn how to win them.
Plenty showed up to vote on the match (many more than after the loss to Collingwood) and rewarded Brandon Ellis for his best game in the Yellow and Black. Clearly Ellis has had enough of playing the super-sub and showed a great 4 quarter effort with plenty of run and guts and has now debuted at number 7 on the leaderboard. Chris Knights also received his first votes of the year and rocketed into the top 10 after showing some classy finishing skills that were critical in keeping us in touch once the purple haze clamped down after quarter time. His 3 goals kept us in touch and showed what he can bring to the side if his form stays steady. Finally, Dusty made a solid comeback from a disappointing match against the Pies the previous week. He needs to learn how to maintain his tank and his influence on the match, because a 4 quarter effort from him can certainly swing the outcome of matches in the Tigers' favour.
Things get no easier this week as the Tigers take on the undefeated Cats at the 'G on Saturday night. It's been awhile since we played them away from the Cattery and we were able to run them close last year. It would be a remarkable victory of the boys can pull it off and set us up with a 4-2 start to the season!
Carn' the Tiges!
