MATCH REPORT
by Streak
The Tiger faithful went to the G on Saturday full of nervous anticipation, rather than suffering from the overblown media hype surrounding the long awaited arrival of the Tigers as a league force once more. While a 3-0 start to the season was cause for optimism for Tiger fans, reality checks lurk around every corner. And big games on big stages have a history of being brutally confronting for the Tigers.
In great conditions for footy, the crowd exceeded 80,000 fans for the first time in 30 years (which many of us still find hard to believe). The Tigers started brightly enough and rattled on a couple of quick goals before the Pies could settle. Riewoldt got the first, Dusty had exploded onto the match, and things looked good. But while continuing to play well enough to suggest they had the measure of their opponent, the Tigers just could not capitalise on opportunities to get a decisive break, and so it was that the Pies went into quarter time only 11 points down and starting to come to grips with the early Tiger enthusiasim.
What had become a fierce arm wrestle continued into the second quarter as the Pies slowly but surely ate into the Tigers lead. Collingwood's attack on the ball was as much a reason as the Tigers not attacking it. The Richmond boys looked incapable of laying a tackle at times, and but for the efforts of skipper Cotchin, the game could well have fallen from the Tigers grasp before halftime. As it was, a goal from Vickery right near the halftime siren restored the Tiger lead, and the diehards still believed that the Pies were there for the taking.
But Travis Cloke, he who was in some doubt before the game with a dislocated finger, decided to extract it as the Pies went on a bloody rampage to start the 3rd quarter. The Tigers were pressured out of the contest around the packs, and couldn't get the ball in open play as Collingwood dominated the first 20 minutes of the quarter. The Tigers defenders stood little chance against a mountain of quality ball coming inside the Pies forward 50. They slammed on 8 goals, 4 to Cloke, to effectively kill the contest. It was eerily similar to the game last year, when a 20 minutes burst in the 3rd quarter destroyed the Tigers chances. Twelve months is not a long time, but it is hard to believe that last year the Tigers played so insipidly as they did this time round.
A couple of late goals gave the Tigers hope, as they managed to reel in a 50 point Pie lead to under 4 goals early in the last term, but that was really just a tease and when they decided to get interested again, the Pies pulled away to record a solid 34 point victory.
The loss underlined what the cooler Tiger heads had been thinking during the week. While a 3-0 start was a welcome way to start the season, there is still some way to go before the Tigers will be genuine top 4 contenders. The Pies were missing a number of quality players, and had others apparently down on form, but they still showed their opponent a margin of class.
That said, the Tigers will learn from this game and could well use those learnings to knock of Fremantle in Perth. Collingwood wanted it more, pure and simple.

Thanks to Streak for a great summary of the loss to Collingwood last week. As disappointing as it was, it gives us an idea of where we need to improve and hopefully the boys can put in a full 4-quarter effort tonight against the Dockers.
The PRE crowd voted with their feet this week, with a big drop in the number of ballots. Not surprising giving the nature of the loss and the opponent. However, it turned out to be a very close poll, with Jack's 3 goals seeing him secure the victory this week by a solitary vote over Bachar Houli, who provided some good run and disposal out of our defence, reminiscent of his best games of the past couple of years. Cotchin also featured strongly again, ending up as 3rd best Tiger afield for the third week running and keeping it tight at the top of leaderboard between Lids and himself.
I look forward to a better effort tonight - it's always good to watch some Friday night footy - even better when it is the Tiges featuring!
Carn' the Tiges!
