After beating Carlton for the first time since 2008 Richmond came into the match against St Kilda with momentum behind them. On the other hand St Kilda were coming off a disappointing loss to the Gold Coast Suns. Round 2 marked the comeback of a Tigers favourite in Dylan Grimes and a Richmond debut for former Demon Ricky Petterd.
1st Quarter – Ivan Maric was beaten in the ruck against Ben McEvoy. Richmond’s midfield still managed to move the ball well, with Dustin Martin getting a lot of the ball. Jack Riewoldt missed his first shot on goal but kicked 2 goals in the same quarter. Luke McGaune took some great pack marks and kicked 2 goals, to help take the pressure off Jack in the forward line. St Kilda looked good moving the ball quickly through the midfield but failed to capitalise on their chances when they got the ball in their forward 50, due to some silly free kicks and a 50 metre penalty against Nick Riewoldt. Troy Chaplin helped stop St Kilda’s tall forwards marking the ball and used the ball well out of defence. St Kilda’s small forwards Terry Milera and Ahamd Saad both kicked goals helping keep St Kilda in the match.
2nd Quarter - Jack Riewoldt kept the Saints defenders under pressure, providing a dangerous target in the forward line while kicking another 2 goals. Both teams were willing to fight for the ball in the midfield. Ricky Petterd was handy in defence for the Tigers, taking some important marks. Reece Conca and Jake King both kicked a goal each this quarter. Jake Bachelor struggled one on one in defence. Shane Edwards did some nice things with the ball playing in the midfield. Richmond could have been further in front if they had of kicked straight with their shots on goal.
3rd Quarter – Richmond had the advantage over St Kilda on the field but could never break away on the scoreboard. Trent Cotchin stepped up in the midfield after a quiet first half. Jack Riewoldt kept up his good form kicking another 2 goals. Vickery and Newman both kicked a goal each in the 3rd quarter. Bachar Houli and Shaun Grigg both got a lot of the ball in this quarter but their disposal wasn’t always great. Brett Delido used the ball well when he had it.
4th Quarter – St Kilda came hard in the last quarter, getting as close as 4 points at one stage. Alex Rance was important playing on Nick Riewoldt stopping him from having any more impact on the match. Steve Morris held Stephen Milne to 1 goal for the whole match. Brandon Ellis played fantastic coming on as sub in the last quarter, taking an important mark in defence and impacting contests. Jack Riewoldt kicked a goal in the last quarter, finishing with 7 goals for the match. Jake King will be filthy on dropping the mark of the year. Reece Conca played arguably his best match for the Tigers, his pass to Ivan resulting in a goal to seal the match was a highlight.
Richmond did well to hold off a fighting St Kilda team and a rack up another close win. Richmond always held the edge in this match. Richmond had more composure in closing out the match then they did last week. Richmond take on the Western Bulldogs in their next match with a serious chance of being 3-0.

What a lovely way to spend a Friday night. Watching the Tigers go 2-0 for the first time since '97 and to do so against the Saints was great to witness.
In the voting this week the PRE crowd couldn't go past Jack's bag of 7 for the best Tiger on the ground and rightly so. The beauty of Jack is that although he can play the marking, goal kicking role, he can also kick goals when other opportunities arise. He is a footballer first and foremost and a footballer with an innate goal sense. A valuable commodity in any side. Conca also featured heavily in the ballots this week as he played his best game in the yellow and black. His ability to play out 4 quarters as a consistent contributor bodes well for our midfield depth. He is hard at it and some of his spot ups that resulted in goals, including the sealer to Maric were great to witness. Finally, Trent Cotchin continued to display his champion attributes as he persisted after being shut down in the first half by Clinton Jones. To come out of the match as the highest possession winner on the ground was a massive effort and was critical in the Tigers' victory.
The Tigers now have the opportunity to go 3-0 against the Dogs on Sunday in what shapes up as a danger game, but a game that the Tigers should win. We certainly have more talent across the field when compared to the Dogs, but the boys from the west have had a promising start to the season and can't be taken lightly. There should be a great crowd at Etihad, to hopefully continue the early season Tiger success.
