MATCH REPORT
by Streak

On a day that promised so much and brought the Tigers faithful to the MCG in droves, it was so unfortunate that the majority of the crowd left feeling as filthy as the weather.

The Tigers were going in as red hot favourites having thumped the Hawks and outlasting the Saints in their last two encounters. The football world was acknowlodging the emergence of a new power in football, as much for the fact that the club was nearing its debt free goal and getting things right off-field as the exciting football being played by an exciting team of players on it.

And for half of the first qtr, things were going to script. The Tigers looked to be handling the atrocious weather conditions better, and the Dockers had immediate injury concerns as both Sandilands and Hill were limping inside the first 15 minutes. The Tigers broke to an early lead, and it looked how far Richmond.

But the loss of Sandilands suprisingly seemed to help balance a listing Fremantle ship, and from virtually that point on the game was destined to be a scrap. The Dockers worked their way back into the game by starting to win the ball in the middle and De Boer was in the thick of it. On the other side of the ledger, Riewoldt twisted an ankle charging towards a contest and looked like he might be gone for the day. He showed great courage and came back on in the second qtr, but was proppy and had minimal impact thereafter.

The Tigers qtr time lead of 7 points looked far from convincing, but Tigers fans would have still been confident of their side breaking away for a match winning lead in the second. But it was the Dockers who grabbed the initiative, and as is so often in the case in these type of games, the luck started to go their way. Griffin kicked a goal from a ridiculous angle given the conditions as the Dockers worked their way to a 7 point lead. The Tigers didn't score for the first 23 minutes of the qtr. Whereas the Dockers were playing to the conditions, the Tigers seemed hell bent on playing their usual gameplan and it wasn't working. The Tigers did come back late in the qtr, but Pavlich, playing a blinder, kicked one late to give the Dockers a very unexpected half time lead.

The third qtr was tit for tat, but the Tigers were making very hard work of scoring whereas the Dockers, with a wide open forward line, were making the most of fewer opportunities. Cotchin stamped himself on the qtr with a great goal to lift the Tigers spirits, but he was playing a lone hand. De Boer continued to cut up the Tigers, whereas the Tigers drive players were generally being well held (Deledio), or unable to have the impact they should have (Grigg and Tuck). A miss by Nahas after the siren left the Dockers clinging to a 4 point lead going into the last qtr. It was going to come down to who wanted it more.

The issue was pretty much settled as the Dockers grabbed the first two goals of the last qtr through Pavlich. The 15 point lead was always going to be tough to overcome in the conditions, and so it proved although the Tigers' poor decision making and some dubious umpiring made that task a lot tougher. The Tigers seemed beaten, but found some urgency late and were a chance with 4 minutes to go. But the Dockers ised the game through the serial pest Ballantyne, and the Dockers eventually took the game by 12 points. The Tigers late charge was blighted by a return of 1.6 for the qtr, whereas the Dockers kicked 3.0.

And so the Tigers were left to rue a loss to an opponent that wanted the win more, won the contested footy, tackle count and generally had numbers at the ball all day. Cotchin and Edwards aside, it was difficult to find a Tiger winner on the day. The Dockers had winners all over the ground, with Pavlich arguably best on ground with a display that turned back the clock.

It all made for a disappointing day for Richmond. But one senses this team will earn from its failure and come back better for it. Whether that will be good enough to make the finals this season remains to be seen.

First off, a big thanks to Streak for providing the match report this week after a last minute request. Above and beyond. :clap

As for the game, a disappointing loss was magnified by the drenching, fine rain that fell for most of the first half. It is one thing to sit in the rain during a win, but it is hard to endure a loss in such conditions.

The PRE crowd voted their disapproval by abstaining in many cases, with votes down by 20 over last week's win. However, the stand out was again Trent Cotchin, who after facing a challenge from Lids has reasserted himself and reestablished a big buffer at the top of the table. The Chimp is capable of the amazing and I literally gasped when he evaded 3 Dockers on the wing to burst into space. His ability to move in traffic was all the more impressive considering the conditions. Comment has been made on his disposal in this match and there were a couple of obvious turnovers, but his good far outweighed the couple of mistakes. Titch Edwards has also continued his mid-season renaissance as he re-invents himself as an opportunistic goal kicker that can also be played for stints in the midfield. His form has appeared to silence many of his critics on PRE. Let's hope he can maintain and build on these promising signs. Finally and not unsurprisingly Tucky found himself in the votes. Considering the conditions I would have backed him in for a best on ground performance as Tucky loves the wet. He wasn't the most dominant on the ground, but his get ball, kick ball style was very effective on the day.

After the reality check against Freo the team has the opportunity to bounce back with a win as they come up against GWS tomorrow. I am hoping and expecting to see a good percentage boost. A team with finals aspirations should aim for no less.
