MATCH REPORT
by Panthera tigris FC
On a perfect, late-winter Sunday afternoon the Tigers took on the Swans eager to break their recent string of disappointing losses that have seen them miss the chance of finals for the 10th consecutive year. The Tigers only had pride and development on the line, while Sydney had everything to play for as they battled to hold their position in the top 8.
There had been some encouraging signs from the Tigers in their loss to the Eagles the previous week, so, although unlikely, a win wasn't out of the question. The team saw a couple of changes with Batchelor and Post returning to the side at the expense of the injured Conca and out of form Luke McGuane.
The game started brightly for the Tiges as they applied the forward press to perfection, keeping the Swans locked inside our forward 50 at the City end of the ground. However, the Tigers squandered their opportunities and really only had a single goal from Nahas to show for their early dominance. For Tiger supporters this was an ominous sign as wasteful use of the ball in front of goal and not capitalising on momentum have proven costly in previous matches. When the Swans responded and the momentum swung the Tigers were unable to hold onto their early lead and Sydney went in to quarter time ahead. Another first quarter loss after dominating early didn't bode well.
However, counter to much of the form seen throughout this season Richmond responded in the second quarter and didn't allow Sydney to break away. In fact, the work of Cotchin in the guts and Houli streaming on the backline again saw the Tigers wrestle the initiative from the Swans and apply pressure. The Tigers managed to stack on 4 goals to 1 in the term and go into half time in front.
After a long season, it would be interesting to see how the Tigers played in the second half the match. They have shown a greater ability to run out matches, but with a young list and tired legs against more seasoned opponents there were doubts about whether they had it in them.
What occurred in the second half was more than any Tiger fan could have dreamed of, as the Tiger backline stood up beautifully against the Swans attack, primarily through the work of Alex Rance. His bravery and attack on the ball continues to stand out and, more surprisingly, his composure and use of the ball has improved out of sight. The Tigers continued to attack and managed to break away from the Swans in the final quarter to register a 43 point victory.
In the voting this week Houli was the clear stand out and has now moved into the top 5. Not bad for a player that we got for next to nothing in the PSD. His 32 possessions were characterised by exquisite, long kicks that set up attack after attack. Questions over his willingness to tackle were silenced when he laid a perfect tackle on Adam Goodes to prevent what appeared to be a certain goal. Cotchin also continues his great form and was the impetus for the Tigers clearances from the stoppages. He has now all but guaranteed himself of a victory in this years PREmier Fighting Tiger Award with three matches to play. Not bad for a kid who has only completed a single preseason. Rance also polled strongly as his role as the Tiger's number one defender has seen him make great strides in 2011. For me, his development in the highlight of a mediocre season as I certainly was close to putting a line through his name in 2010. His improvement in overhead marking and decision making are astronomical and he looks to be a likely lynchpin in the Tiger's defence for many seasons to come.
This week sees the Tiger's take on the struggling Dees at the 'G for the Sunday twilight match. I am never confident of a victory and that is exaggerated when we go in favourites with the bookies. Either way it will be great to see the Tigers play for the last time at the 'G for 2011 and hopefully they can flip their recent form against Melbourne. If anyone is interested in providing the match report, let me know.
Carn' the Tiges!
