MATCH REPORT
by evo

After a solid win the previous week, the Tiges had good cause to believe their season could get well and truly get back on track after weathering a bye and a extended trip around the country which included planes, trains and automobiles behind them. Sitting just outside the eight on percentage, a meeting with similarly placed Melbourne promised a season defining match for both clubs. Melbourne's form had been typically fickle for a young side building for the future, with a recent win-then-loss record that was beginning to define their season.

At the selection table Melbourne were fortunate to welcome back talented ruckman Mark Jamar from a extended stint on the injury list, while Richmond lost the all important Push Up King to a rather dubious MRP decision earlier in the week. Prior to the bounce commentators, supporters and bookies alike couldn't split the two teams. Pre-game consensus around the beer tap amongst Richmond supporters appeared to be that if we could come out and win the first quarter for once then we were a big chance against a mentally suspect Melbourne team. Melbourne supporters, on the other hand, were bullish on the prospects of a Watts finally beginning to realise some of the potential he had shown as a junior.

In the first 5 minutes Richmond were up-and-about and held the ball in their forward half, repeatedly peppering the goal. Two long goals to Martin and Newman along with a number of points meant that Richmond had shot to nearly a 3 goal lead before Melbourne had passed the centreline. Melbourne's talented first midfield however began to assert themselves, and quick forwards Petterd, Green, Jurrah and Watts began to look more dangerous against an inexperienced Gourdis and a hapless McGuane. First year players Batchelor and new recruit Houli provided the only real resistance in the back half. Added midfield pressure, and some poor turnovers by Richmond, saw Melbourne proceed to kick 6 goals on the trot to take momentum and a three goal lead into the first break.

Early in the second quarter Deledio and Foley began to assert themselves on the contest and Vickery provided a dangerous option forward, kicking two goals in quick succession. However, with Jamar feeding Moloney, Scully and Jones at will in the centre, and alternatively providing a marking target forward, Melbourne were able to gather themselves. The changing ruckman Stefan Martin was also proving too mobile for the inexperienced Andrew Browne. In a tightly contested quarter Melbourne were proving to be cleaner by hand and foot, again kicking a series of goals. Richmond, in contradistinction, were finding it hard to string a chain of quality disposals together; Edwards a serial offender. A late long goal by Grigg and quick answer from Green saw Melbourne go into the big break five goals to the good.

The third quarter started with much of the same. Richmond appeared unwilling to run and spread when they had possession and Melbourne were regularly getting superior numbers to the contests. Cotchin, Nahas and Martin were at least starting to get more of the ball, but Melbourne's pressure around the contests, and rudimentary Tiger disposal errors, meant that Richmond were unable to get the type of flowing runs from the half back that had made them so exciting to watch earlier in the season. Any forays forward were quickly snuffed out by the in form Frawley as Reiwoldt gave Richmond little, and Miller gave absolutely nothing. A penetrating goal on the run by Newman and a nice hangar from Deledio the only real bright spots in an otherwise disappointing quarter for the boys in yellow and black - a horror moment late in the quarter by Vickery dithering in front of goal indicative of Richmond's poor day. It was only errant kicking for goal by Melbourne that allowed Richmond to be anywhere near the Dees going into the final break. A Watt's buzzer-beater, possibly the final nail in the coffin.

Nevertheless, at the start of the final quarter and five goals down, one couldn't help feeling that Richmond may still suddenly click into gear and find some of the form that had seen them come on late in previous tight contests. An early Vickery goal, and then another by the otherwise quiet Farmer, gave the Tiger faithful a glimmer of hope; the 64,000 strong crowd were starting to finally find some cause for voice. tellingly however, Melbourne rallied again and a McGuane handball to a stationary target resulted in a goal. A late goal by Foley was to no avail and Melbourne ran out with a reasonably comfortable victory.

In a game played in pristine conditions in front of a large pro-Tiger crowd there were few real bright spots for the Richmond Football Club - disposal was poor, run and spread and the breaking of lines, almost non existent. To Melbourne's credit they were stronger over the ball , more committed in the contest, and cleaner by hand and foot. The young Batchelor played one of his best games for the club and Vickery provided a dangerous target with limited opportunities. Foley, Nahas, Grigg, Houli and Deledio were busy without ever getting really damaging.

It will have to be a big week on the track to go close to Carlton on exposed form.

EDITORIAL
by Panthera tigris FC

A quiet week in the polls as the Tigers went down to the Dees in a disappointing effort. In the voting this week Nathan Foley bobbed up as the winner for his 27 possession, 11 contested and 5 clearances. Jake Batchelor was one of the few to impress this week as he continues his solid first year in the yellow and black and Tyrone Vickery continues to play the role of the most dangerous forward at Tigerland. This week sees the Tigers take on the Blues in a big match on Saturday. I'll be sad to miss it, but hopefully I will be able to report from afar. If not, continue to vote and I will post all results upon my return prior to the Gold Coast match. If anyone is willing to provide match reports for the next 2 weeks, let me know.

Carn' the Tiges!
