Just finished another review of the game

3 Cotchin
2 Martin
1 Vickery

We have some thumping kicks in the side - Jackson can roost the ball ! Maybe not where he intends but it goes. When Griff comes in we will have the biggest kicks in the league.

MATCH REPORT
by Streak

The Tigers’ path back to respectability in the AFL continued last Saturday night as the team travelled to Brisbane to clash with the Lions for a second time this season. After two successive road losses, the Tigers were keen to atone and looking to beat an opponent showing very poor form in recent weeks.

The Tigers preparation for the match was far from ideal. After a narrow loss to Sydney in a hard slog of a match, the team found itself marooned in Sydney as flights out of town fell victim to the infamous volcanic ash cloud. Prevented from leaving after the game as planned, the team found itself on a bus back home the next day, a trip of 10 hours.

But while the negatives were plain to see, reports from the trip suggested that in adversity, the Tigers might just have had a positive team bonding experience. The type of seminal moment that coaches try so hard to produce to galvanise their team, but which so often happens in unexpected ways at unexpected times.

Thankfully the Tigers were able to fly to Brisbane for the game, but early it looked like they might have arrived via London. Yet again, the Tigers were off to a slow one as Brisbane kicked the first 4 goals of the game showing a greater propensity to run hard and create options with better ball usage. The Lions were making the most of their opportunities while the Tigers, who coming into the match remarkably had the best set shot accuracy percentage in the league, kicked 3 behinds from set-shots.

Grigg finally nabbed a goal for the Tigers, and Tyrone Vickery got another soon after, and amazingly enough, the Tigers were within 9 points of their opponents at qtr time despite being well beaten.

The second qtr started according to script for the Tigers, the first two goals giving Richmond a narrow lead. Although Brisbane hit back through a goal to Mitch Clark, a Riewoldt goal and then a gift that even Miller couldn’t miss (courtesy of an interchange mistake) gave the Tigers a 16 point buffer 8 minutes before halftime. Mitch Clark was out of the game with an ankle injury, and it looked how far the Tiges.

But slow starts aside, if the Tigers have had a weakness this season it has been the inability to play a full quarter of football, and so it proved again. Brown finally managed to get on the scoreboard after a first rate blanketing job by Rance, and then Redden got another to get the Lions right back into it. Richmond 7.9 (51) to Brisbane Lions 7.6 (48) at the half.

The third quarter started all Brisbane as they booted the first two. Tigers fans knew it was an aberration but the pucker factor was definitely going in the wrong direction. Enter Dustin Martin. The Tigers against took control of the contest with the next 4 goals leading to 3qtr time, with Martin arguably the catalyst. Dusty scored two himself and gave the Tigers tremendous drive forward, with Cotchin adding a pearler as well. Up by 17 points, the Tigers looked to be home, although the more pessimistic Tigers fans were probably wondering if it would be enough given the previous week’s game and the tough trip home.

The pessimists looked like they might be right 10 minute into the last. The Tigers 17 point lead was back to 4 after the Lions kicked a couple of grinding goals, and the Tigers were looking spent. But then Nahas produced an inspirational bit of play, running down a rampaging Simon Black in the middle of the ground and winning a free that resulted in a Vickery goal. It took all the wind out of the Lions sails, and the Tigers kicked the next 5 to seal the deal. The Lions got two goals back in garbage time before Dustin Martin kicked his 5th for the night with a monster from outside the 50 that had plenty left in it when it sailed through.

Despite the fact that the game was in the balance for much of the night due to the Tigers inability to put away an inferior opponent, there were definitely some major positives to come out of the game for the Yellow and Black. Alex Rance dominated Jonathan Brown in his most decisive performance for the club. Tyrone Vickery showed that he can be a serious tall threat in the forward line, and still has plenty of improvement left in him, and Dustin Martin underlined succinctly that he is a match winner.

EDITORIAL

The voting this week saw 3 clear favourites and a tight tussle for the honours. In the end, Dusty's patches of sheer brilliance won him the award for the week over Cotchin's workman-like four quarter effort that saw him consistently winning the hard ball for his side. Both were brilliant and showed what the future holds for this side. The other big winner this week was big Tyrone Vickery who really stamped his authority on match as the most dominant big forward, not a small ask when the other 50 metre arc contains J. Brown. Tyrone through himself into the contest, crashing packs, leading well and marking truly. If he had kicked straight, he would probably have taken the honours this week as his 4 goals were not a true reflection of his match.

Cotchin is now making a nice break from the pack overall as he consistently racks up the votes. With his weekly average of 85 votes, he will be hard to chase down with half of the season complete.

This week sees the Tigers playing for a spot in the 8 (probably) against the erratic Melbourne FC. It should be a great contest on a Saturday arvo at the 'G. If any PREnder would like to volunteer to provide a report for the match it would be greatly appreciated.

Carn' the Tiges!

It was difficult today because most of our players were involved in some shocking clangers during the game.
I thought Hislop, Cotchin and Edwards fought hard all day too.
