MATCH REPORT
by Panthera tigris FC
After a disappointing loss to Port Adelaide in Darwin the Tigers had 2 weeks to dwell on that performance before heading up to Sydney to make amends. Teams coming off the bye this year have seem to struggle, so the facing the Swans at the SCG was an even more daunting task than normal. The conditions for the match were decidedly wintery, with low temperatures and plenty of rain leading up to the match.
The game itself was a messy affair, characterised by inaccuracy on the part of the Swans. In the first half the Swans kicked 14 behinds, many of those as a result of missed set shots inside 50. Theire waste in front of goal kept the Tigers in the match and the game was certainly in the balance going into the second half with the Swans only up by 13 points.
In the second half the game was an arm wrestle, with the Swans consistently keeping the Tigers at arm's length until early in the final quarter. Martin passed the ball off to Jackson who was immediately tackled, spilling the ball back to Martin who kicked a checkside banana from 40+ to level the scores. When Martin found himself with the ball in front of goal moments later, he sprayed it for a behind to put the Tigers in front. It then came down to some good footy from Kieran Jack, the Swans' substitute, who showed his rugby pedigree to break a couple of Tiger tackles, feed O'Keefe who kicked a steadying goal from 50. This gave the Swans back the initiative and when they immediately scored twice again, following some dismal goal line defence by the Tigers and a free kick on Miller, the game was always going to be difficult to win. However, to the Tigers' credit, they fought out the match and got the margin to within 10 points. A couple of late missed opportunities to Hislop and Cotchin, kept the margin comfortable enough for the Swans, who maintained that 10 point margin to go on victors.
Overall, there were certainly positives to take from the match, with the Tigers again fighting out the match for 4 quarters. Ultimately though, it was a frustrating match with the Tigers conceding too many soft goals and now making their finals hopes in 2011 all that more difficult.
In the voting this week Dusty was a slim winner after a solid display in midfield, exhibiting his trademark strength in the clinches. His goal kicking ability was also prominent as he kicked 2 very good goals in the match. Houli's recent good form continued as he mopped up in defence and used his beautiful kick to send the Tigers into attack on several occasions.
The Tigers continue their month on the road with a trip to Brisbane to take on the Lions. The Tigers certainly need to win this match if they are to keep their finals aspirations alive this season.
If any Brisbane Tiger supporters would like to volunteer to provide a match report it would be much appreciated. Streak has kindly offered to provide match reports, but I thought I would open it up to all PREnders. I am heading overseas in 2 weeks, so I will need definite reporters for the Round 15 match against Carlton and Round 16 match against the Bombers. Let me know if you can do it.
