Tigers slow starters
With Sam Mitchell absent from Hawthorn’s midfield, Trent Cotchin and a resurgent Nathan Foley won plenty of clearances for the Tigers out of the centre of the MCG. But from that point on it was all one way, yes Hawthorn's.
The Hawks ball movement out of Richmond’s forward line went largely unchallenged all day as the Tigers resembled umbrella-less commuters huddling in a bus-shelter. Riewoldt played like a bloke who’d been hit in the head the week before and couldn’t get near the pill, which seemed reasonable in the conditions, except he had been seen revelling in similar soccer-like slush just a year before.
Buddy was Hawthorn’s best midfielder, once he was shifted there during junk-time, about 20 minutes after half-time. The Tigers had briefly threatened a revival - or maybe it was just Jake King - and when Hawthorn appeared to go a man down - in the conditions, it didn’t seem unreasonable.
But just as had been the case when Richmond appeared to slowly warm to the contest late in the first half - after a pretty-tardy start - nothing would go right for the Tigers as far as sending the ball into the goal-mouth was concerned.
The umpires put the whistle away as Richmond fought feverishly in front of goals for what seemed like hours on end. The ball would then swing to the other side of the 50 and the same umpires would begin to feverishly shrill their silver lip-liners. A rumour swept the southern stand then that the umpires had sworn before the match to only pay Hawthorn a free-kick every time they saw a seagull.
What was a slippery-cake of soap to the Tigers was a sticky-sweet bun to the Hawks who shared the scones like waiters on the deck of a cruise-ship.
We matched the Hawks for clearances, hard-ball gets and inside 50’s but not a crumb to show for it.

In the voting this week Robbie Nahas managed to snag the most after showing plenty of endeavour in an otherwise uninspired display from the Tigers. The PRE voters showed their disapproval, with more than 30 fewer ballots cast this week, compared to the draw against the Saints. Cotchin came close to Nahas' victory after showing great skill and poise in the first half, but his quieter second half saw him miss votes from a few ballots. Daniel Jackson has continued to show important strength and leadership in the midfield and this has been recognised in the voting and in a promising return to form Nathan Foley also featured on a number of ballots this week.
Thanks to tigertrue for his report this week. I am still looking for a PRE volunteer to provide a match report for game against the Pies tomorrow night. If you are a bit of a masochist feel free to put your hand up in
this thread.
I will be heading to the 'G tomorrow night, as always, and all I hope is that the boys show a bit more fight than they did for a first home game of the season.
