A disappointing crowd of less than 30000 showed up for the Easter Sunday twilight match between the young, inexperienced Tigers outfit and the mature, potential top 4 side in the Bulldogs. Whether it was the promise of a good ol' fashioned shellacking, or the potential for a nice family meal (or both!) the crowd was one of the smaller ones in recent memory and those that were there were strangely subdued for most of the 4 quarters - a very unusual sign from a Tiger-crowd. The game itself started in a reasonably promising fashion, with the Tigers able to get a couple of scores on the board through Mitch Morton, but the constant turnovers and errors crept into the game and the Bulldogs were able to capitalise on these mistakes to lead for the entire match. Sitting at the game, it was a pretty disheartening affair, however watching the replay on Wednesday evening I found there were plenty of promising signs to build upon as the team matures.

Firstly, although the Bulldogs were never seriously threatened on the scoreboard, the Tigers did apply some serious pressure at times and caused a few un-Bulldog-like turnovers. Usually we managed to turn it back over quickly enough, but the fact that we were able to pressure the ball carrier during many patches of play was something that was seen very rarely during the Wallace years.

Another promising sign was the form of our defensive 3 in Moore, McGuane and Thursfield. It is fair to say that it rained inside-50s for the Bulldogs and yet the defence stood up very well IMO against such a bombardment. McGuane played a good game, providing run out of defence, Moore shrugged off an indifferent 2009 and round 1 to find the ball much more often and Thursfield held the dangerous Barry Hall to a single goal. Add Connors to this mix, playing the sweeping, rebounding defender role and we are starting to form the nucleus of a reasonable defence. We certainly seem to be missing that small defender to ensure that the crumbs aren't exploited by the opposition. Farmer has obviously been given first crack at this role, but it would seem he has a bit of work to do to cement it for himself. Some further depth is also required in our backline and the development of players like Post and Gourdis are critical in this area.

Finally, the form of some of our younger midfielders, especially Cotchin and Martin, was heartening. The Chimp showed the elite decision making, elusiveness in traffic, disposal and importantly, that initial burst of speed, that we know he is capable of. As he builds fitness throughout the season he can only improve in these areas, which is an extremely exciting prospect, to say the least! Martin worked his way into the game and finished with the most center clearances of any player on the ground with 8 (the next best was Cooney with 5), not a bad effort for a player in his second game of AFL. Add to that the poise shown to sell the dummy and slot a goal from 40 metres out and there appears plenty to get excited about.

Overall, the Tigers were beaten by a much better side that exhibits some of the best disposal in the league. Hardwick and his assistants have their work cut out to eliminate the silly turnovers that cause the Tigers to leak goals consistently through their matches. I will certainly be backing them to do so and look forward to watching this young side develop throughout the season, albeit with minimal expectations.

In the polls this week Trent Cotchin was the standout as his poise in the midfield was recognised by the PREnders. Thursfield's performance holding Barry Hall was also rewarded, as was the courage, run and long kicks of Daniel Connors.

This weekend sees the Tigers travelling to Sydney to face a tough Swans team. Hardwick has made a number of changes (which actually appear merit based!), so it will be interesting to see how they go on the smaller ground up north. Best of luck to those Tigers making their 2010 debuts, Tucky, Polo, Rance and White.

Carn' the Tiges!
