After a pretty solid 2009 season that showed that he could play some reasonable footy at AFL level, Graham was overlooked early in the 2010 season, with the coaching staff preferring the ruck duo of Simmonds and Vickery. Reports out of Coburg were not promising for Gus and for a while it seemed as if his form in 2009 may have been an aberration. However, with the retirement of Simmonds, Gus got his opportunity and to his credit strung together some very good games in the ruck and showed that he certainly has a future with the Richmond footy club. He appeared to fade towards the end of the season, the result of playing first ruck for an extended period and the aftermath of some bone-jarring bumps to the ribs in a couple of games. It would appear that Graham will be shouldering the load as first ruck at the Tigers, at least for 2011, while Vickery, Browne and any drafted ruckman continue to develop.

It is a credit to Axel that he can play only 4 games in a season and still finish in 17th place. 2010 was almost a complete write-off for Foley as he struggled to recover from ankle surgery in the off season. It seems that some posters on PRE forget the impact that Foley has to our side when he is fit, with curious suggestions of trades and the like. His 4 games this season included a best Tiger on ground performance against Freo in round 5. This former winner of the PRE Player of the Year (2007) had, until now, never finished outside the top 5 in polling since I began these polls in 2007. Let’s hope he can get his ankle right and enjoy a full preseason in 2011. He will certainly instantly improve our side upon his return.

Will Thursfield was in and out of the side in 2010 as he struggled to hold his spot under Hardwick’s coaching. Like McGuane, whom I discussed earlier, it would appear that Thursfield’s development has plateaued and there is pressure being applied for his position by some of the younger defenders on the Richmond list. Again, like McGuane, he was trialled up forward this season, but still wasn’t able to snare his first goal at AFL level. Although defensively still strong, Will needs to continue working on his run out of defence if he is to hold his spot in the starting 22. Given this, I wouldn’t be surprised if his value is sounded out during trade week.

One of the real success stories for the Richmond recruiters out of the 2009 drafts, Ben Nason was taken at number 71 in the 2009 National Draft and managed to play 19 games in his first season at Tigerland. Turning 21 midway through the 2010 season, Ben was taken as a ‘maturer’ recruit playing mainly in the SANFL reserves. With his blonde dreadlocks he is hard to miss when in full flight and has become a bit of a cult hero amongst some of the Richmond faithful. He started the season very well, running out games and providing run down the wings and into the forward 50. He has also shown that he is capable of kicking goals from set shots. I would think the coaching staff would be very pleased with Ben’s output this season and his second pre-season at AFL level should lead to further improvement in 2011.

After a great first year in 2009 where he finished in the top 8 of the PRE Player of the Year polls, Nahas struggled to make an impact in his second. Playing both as a small forward and with stints in the midfield Nahas was consistently brushed aside by the opposition too easily. Another issue that has crept into his game is that he seems to lose his feet far too often, allowing this opponent to sweep the ball away. His set shots for goal also weren’t great in 2010 and his season return of 13 goals from his 14 matches would be below expectations. These issues will need to be rectified if Nahas is to reclaim his position as the crumbing forward for Richmond. He has expressed a desire to work harder to do so, but only time will tell if he is able to become a consistent contributor to the RFC in 2011 and beyond.

Another lovechild of the PRE Darksiders, Jake King continued to defy the critics with another solid year for the RFC in 2010. Widely tipped to be delisted at the end of the year, he struggled to make the side early in the season. However, off the back of some very good performances at Coburg Jake earned a recall to the seniors in Round 9 and held his place in the side for the remainder of the season, earning himself a new contract for 2011 along the way. Kingy played mainly as a defensive forward in 2010 and showed that he could apply good pressure and also kick goals in that role. Although he gets plenty of negative commentary from ‘fans’, media and umpires alike, he consistently polls well as is demonstrated with his high finishes in the PRE Player of the Year polls in every year that I have run them.

After a forgettable 2009 in which Kel only managed to poll 5 votes in 19 matches, the pressure was on for a better showing in 2010. As it turns out, Moore did return to some solid form and probably became our number 1 pure defender. He played defensive roles on a number of big forwards, but also provided good run out defence, linking up well with our running halfbacks and generally making good decisions. Unlike some of our other defenders, I don’t see Moore going anywhere and hopefully he can have another good year in Richmond’s defence in 2011.

Although there were some absurd calls for his axing from posters on PRE earlier this season, by the end of it, Titch had silenced most of his critics. Awarded the Most Improved Player award by the RFC this year, Titch had a very good year, playing all 22 games, most of them in the midfield and on the wing. I have a soft spot for Titch as he happens to be my 3 year old daughter’s favourite Tiger (watching the footy with her becomes of game of ‘Spot Titch’!) but I also love his ability to find space in traffic, his elite disposal by hand and his good decision making. Shane has shown consistent improvement in his 4 seasons with the Tigers and looks ready to have a big season in 2011.

It was a strange season for Mitch Morton. For a player who managed to kick the most goals of any Richmond player in 2009, it seemed amazing that he struggled to get a spot in the senior side in 2010. After having 4 ordinary games to start the season, Mitch was relegated back to Coburg. Speculation mounted on the PRE forums as to the reason for the length of time he spent out of the seniors, however upon returning in Round 17 against Collingwood (after a single, ordinary game in Round 11) it was revealed that he was learning the midfield game plan at Coburg after requesting a move into the guts. Mitch has always shown immense talent and more goal-sense than probably any other player on our side. It was awesome to see his move into the midfield and how successfully he managed the transformation into a midfielder by the end of the season. Before his Round 17 recall he was sitting in 25th position on the leaderboard, however in those last 6 games he was voted in the top 2 Tigers on the ground in 4 of them and leapt into the top 10. Let’s hope Mitch is ready for a big 2011 where he can play the role of a goal kicking midfielder for the entire season.

Daniel Jackson came into the 2010 season as one of the Tigers’ bigger bodied midfielders. 2009 had been a bit of a breakout year for Daniel, as reflected in his 3rd place finish in these awards last season. He had shown that he could be a very good shutdown player and had started winning his own ball as well. This season started well and he was voted the best Tiger on the field in the round 1 clash against the Blues. He remained on top for most of the first third of the season until he was suspended for a ‘head-butt’ on Hawthorn’s Campbell Brown. Although soft, it did see Jacko spend a few weeks on the sidelines and when he copped another two match suspension in the match versus Freo he ended up missing out on almost ¼ of the season. This was costly for the side, which missed his physical presence on the ball, a point not missed by the coach. Jackson has come a long way in his development and although still not the most natural of footballers has become an important component of the Tiger’s midfield. Let’s hope he can rein in his natural aggression in 2011 and play out a full season.

The ‘Cuz show’ continued in 2010, a season that included the release of his documentary detailing his drug issues and a mistaken overdose of prescription sleeping tablets. On the field, 2010 had some similarities to 2009, with Cuz struggling with fitness and injury in the first half of the season before striking a purple patch in the second half. In the 5 matches from rounds 16-20 Cuz was voted in the top 3 Tigers on the field in all of them, including 3 as best Tiger on the ground. However, he clearly had slowed down, losing his characteristic burst from the pack and much of the penetration in his kicking. After much “will he, or won’t he” in the media and on the boards, Cuz announced that he would be retiring after round 22. A hamstring injury in round 21 threatened to rain on the Cuz parade, however, with nothing on the line he played in the round 22 match against Port Adelaide. In front a big crowd at Etihad Stadium the Tiger faithful got to farewell a player, who although was only at the club for a couple of seasons was greatly liked by teammate and fan alike. He limped through the match, having little impact and said his farewells at its conclusion. Best of luck in the future Cuz...it was an interesting ride!

Dan Connors came into 2010 with something to prove. After playing only 10 games in his 3 seasons with the club he needed to establish himself as a regular in the team. The season started very well for Connors. He has always shown that he has plenty of talent, his main problem has always been himself, sometimes a bit lazy, sometimes a bit showy. In the first 3 rounds Dan, playing as a rebounding half back featured in the best 3 Tigers on the ground and looked to be set for a breakout season. We all know what happened next. Connors other issue since he has been with the club has involved some off-field ‘issues’, especially associated with alcohol. After the round 3 loss to Sydney, Connors and a few teammates tied some on late into the night at their hotel and Dan had to be subdued by a Cousins fist. An eight-match club imposed suspension followed and a season that had started so promisingly looked like it could end in tragedy for Dan. He served his suspension, swore off alcohol during the season and on his return continued where he left off. Amazingly, even with 8 weeks on the sidelines Dan never dropped out of the top 8. In 2011 a disciplined, more mature Dan Connors should be a potent weapon on the Tigers’ half back line.

Another Tiger that continues to defy the critics, Shane Tuck came into the 2010 season with most pundits assuming it would be his last in the Yellow & Black. After being put on the trade table during the past two off-seasons Tuck had to start the season at Coburg. It didn’t take long for him to force his way back into the seniors and after playing his first game for 2010 in round 3, he cemented his place in the side through tough, inside footy; Tucky’s trademark. For a player that has been perceived to be on the outer at the club, he has certainly played a lot of senior footy, missing only 5 games since round 1 2005! In a young midfield, Tuck’s strength and ability to put is body on the line was invaluable. He also appears to have tightened up his disposal a bit this year, with an appreciable drop in Tucky’s other trademark: the bomb out of the pack straight to the opposition. I have plenty of time for players who do it the hard way and earn their place through hard work. Tuck certainly earned his contract extension this year and will be back in the guts of the Tiger midfield for 2011.

It’s rare to see a player make such an impact in their first season. After being taken with Richmond’s first pick in the 2009 National Draft at number 3 Dustin Martin played 21 games in his debut season, being rested for the match against Geelong. Dusty is a big boy and amazingly strong for a first year player. His trademark fend off to brush off the opposition has already become the stuff of legend among the Tiger faithful. He certainly looks like he is going to be a star, with the ability to win the hard ball, to tackle, to find space in traffic and a booming kick. It is likely that he would have won the Rising Star award (although not a given) but for a (very!) minor indiscretion that involved a head high bump. A top 5 finish in the first year at the club and re-signing with the club suggests that he will be one of the stars at Richmond in the coming years.

After 2 injury-affected seasons, The Chimp had a modified pre-season program in 2010 to ensure that there were no relapses of the Achilles injuries that have hampered him throughout his career. As it turns out, he did have an injury-free season and would have played all but the one game that he was rested for (against Geelong) had it not been for a harsh 4 week suspension that he received after laying a crude bump against Sam Wright of North Melbourne. When he did play, he continued to show the class and leadership that we have come to expect of him. He certainly strikes me as the next leader of the club. This leadership was typified by his revving up of the players as they went off at half time in round 22 after conceding 10 goals to Port Adelaide. The Chimp’s ability to work in traffic and make space for himself is elite and a full pre-season in 2011 will allow him to play out a full season at the same intensity.

The new skipper had a tough first year in the gig in 2009. With the exit of Terry Wallace and being thrust into the media spotlight, Newman’s own form suffered for it. In 2010, as the leader of a young list Newman put 2009 behind him and has his best year at the club. He has certainly grown into the role of captain and is clearly an on-field leader for the developing side. In terms of footy, Newman played his usual role off halfback setting up play and distributing the ball to the forward 50. His disposal by foot was immaculate this season and his solid finish in the PRE Player of the Year awards is well deserved. Any questions over whether a new captain will be appointed in the near future have been quashed by Newman’s excellent form and leadership and he will continue in the role for the foreseeable future.

I think it is safe to say that over the past few seasons Brett Deledio has been Richmond’s best, most durable and most consistent players. He has only missed 3 matches in 6 seasons, won two Jack Dyer Medals and has finished in the top 2 players in the PRE Player of the Year since I started my records in 2007. 2010 will be his 3rd runners up finish in 4 years, to go with his win in 2009. It is well deserved too. Week in, week out, Lids gets the job done. Under the new coach he has been reinvented as a running half back that distributes the ball into the forward 50, a role that has taken his game to another level. 2010 has seen him make the final 40 in contention for All Australian honours, playing in a position that includes some of the classiest players in the AFL. I don’t think that there is another player on the Richmond list that I like to see in possession as much as Lids, because you can be sure that a good decision will be made and carried out with precision almost every time. Well done Lids on a great 2010.

Jumpin’ Jack arrived in 2010 as a new star in the AFL. It is pretty easy to argue that Jack was the most improved player in the competition, as he went from promising young key forward that kicked 32 goals in 2009 to a Coleman medallist that kicked 78 goals in 2010. Jack is Richmond’s first Coleman medallist since Roach won the award in 1981 and he hasn’t even turned 22 years old! It was a great year to watch Jack strut his stuff in the forward line, consistently either taking the grab or splitting the pack to allow the crumbers an opportunity to score. We had been spoiled for a long time having a contested mark as good as Matty Richardson at the Tigers, but even Richo would have applauded some of the outstanding contested marks that Jack took this season. He managed 43 in 2009, 4 more than his nearest rival in the competition. The highlight of the season for me was our win against West Coast when Jack was on fire in the first half. Watching the Punt Road end when he kicked his 10th was a sight to behold. Well done Jack on an awesome breakout season and let’s hope we can get some support down there to share the load in the coming seasons.
