Round 19 saw one of the better matches to watch in 2010 in terms of competitive footy when the Tigers took on the Demons at the MCG. The game had been billed as a contest between two of the up and coming sides in the AFL and the game did not disappoint. The first three quarters of the match were an arm wrestle, with neither side able to break free and establish a clear lead. The game was typified by some of the best forward pressure seen by the Tigers this season, although much of this was wasted due to the lack of scoring as a result of many of the turnovers that this pressure produced. In contrast, the Demons appeared to be the more polished of the two sides in the way the moved the ball and their ability to score when given half an opportunity by the Tigers. As a result, many of the Tigers' goals in those first three quarters appeared to come about through sustained pressure, effort and attack on the ball, whereas the Demons took their opportuties when they arose through clean disposal through the midfield and good kicking for goal. Much of the goal kicking for the Dees was achieved by Lynden Dunn, whose choice of facial hair is interesting, to say the least.
In the early stages of the final quarter the Tigers managed to level the scores and looked as if they may be able to go on with it, however the Dees responded well and wrested control and momentum and ended up blowing out the final margin, taking the victory in a canter. On balance, the final margin of 29 points to Melbourne flattered them, considering the great contest, however their good ball usage throughout the match and the Tigers final quarter fade out meant that they certainly deserved victory on the day.
In the voting this week, Ben Cousins continued to rack up votes in the dying stages of the 2010 season as he presses for a new contract for 2011. Cuz was clearly the Tiger's best midfielder and his vision, footy smarts and gut running were all on show. He is an amazingly hard worker on the field and his efforts were rewarded this week. Second place this week was won by the resurgent Mitch Morton who has somehow managed to push his way into 12th spot on the ladder after playing only 9 games this season. I am a big fan of Mitch, for his usual clean handling, good disposal and obvious nose for goal and all of those attributes were on display on the weekend. We are a far better side with Morton firing and his recent roles in the midfield and on the wing suggest that he is developing some more stings to his bow for the coming seasons. Daniel Jackson also featured prominently in the ballots this week as his 32 possesions (a third of which were contested), 6 tackles and 5 clearances were a clear stand out in the match. Another one of the hard working midfielders in the side, Jacko is still prone to the occasional brain fade, however he isn't going to die wondering and he appears to play a leadership role on the field as well. His ability to shut down opponents and now get his own ball will see him in the starting midfield for some time to come.
This week sees the Tigers take on the Blue Scum at the 'G on Saturday afternoon. Nothing would make me happier then to see the Tigers put a dent in the finals aspirations of Carlton. With the Irishman and the Goo making their debuts it will be a new look backline and a game that I am looking forward to seeing. In a move away from my normal pattern this season I am tipping with the heart and backing the Tigers for a victory!
Carn' the Tiges!
