Having toppled Sydney the previous week Richmond came into round 15 with a bigger test in the form of a top 4 side in Fremantle. 15th vs 4th is not usually a game that arouses much interest, but the recent hot form of Richmond coupled with the loss of some key players for Freo in the form of Barlow and Tarrant, meant that Freo only went in as warm favourites and a number of tipsters were backing Richmond for the upset. As it turned out the formline ran true and Richmond triumphed in a great match at Etihad Stadium.
Every week we seem to find something new about this Tigers side. The victory over Sydney revealed the ability to come back from a deficit to claim victory. This week saw the Tigers battle through the pain barrier to continue to fight for victory. The Tigers started well and the contest was very close in the opening quarter. Freo missed some chances that they should have converted and again the Tigers were accurate in front of goal. When Ben Griffiths went down with a season-ending shoulder injury and then Ben Nason came off second best after a head clash with Jake King it appeared that the Tigers were really going to struggle to run out the match with such a limited bench. Add to this injuries to Gus Graham, after being hit twice with cruching hip and shoulders to the ribs, a corkie to Jake King who kept on running and Matt White essentially playing with vision in only one eye after an errant high five from Titch Edwards after an important Whitey goal split open his eyelid. At times there was no fit player on the bench to rotate and rarely was there more than one. This alone had me thinking that we would struggle to match it with Freo in the final quarter which we entered with a slim 7 point lead.
Given these obstacles, one could be forgiven for thinking that Richmond might try to slow the game down and protect their lead in the final quarter. It is something that Richmond supporters had been used to seeing under Wallace and rarely did it seem to be a successful tactic. However, Dimma's message to his charges was to take the game on in the final quarter and to show everyone how far they have come as a team. In response, the Tigers came out firing and extended their lead. However, the signs of weariness and cramping were apparent and Freo managed to claw their way back to level the scores late in the game. The deadlock was broken by, of all things, a free kick and 50 meter penalty for an interchange infringement. This gave Jack Riewoldt his 5th goal and the Tigers a 6 point lead. That event seemed to deflate Freo and the Tigers ran away with it, Martin kicking a brilliant goal to seal the match and Collins chipping in with a final goal to ice it. It was a great victory under enormous duress and revealed that this current Tiger outfit has more substance than any of recent times.
In the voting this week Connors was recognised as best on ground for his 35 touches off the half back line. His return to the side has provided a huge boost to the Tigers run out of defence. His great footy ability combined with good skills and touch of arrogance has freed up our other rebounding defenders in Deledio, Newman and Moore. Newman was also brilliant again, playing another great skipper's match. He has become so reliable in defence and his disposal has been elite in recent weeks. Adding to that, his leadership on the field has become obvious this season and he has really grown into his role as captain of the club. Deledio also polled strongly, topping off the trifecta for rebounding defenders in the votes this week. Lids continued his excellent form and his claims to a third Jack Dyer medal. Jack Riewoldt, whose ability to kick bags of goals (another 5 this week) has become so passé that he couldn't even poll votes in the double digits this week, may give him a run for his money though.
This week sees the Tigers take on North Melbourne at the 'G on Sunday. I look forward to seeing how long the Tigers can keep this blistering form up.
Carn' the Tiges!
