After a week off with the mid-season break the Tigers returned to the 'G to face Sydney in the second encounter between these teams in 2010. In the first contest this season against Sydney in round 3 the Tigers were well beaten by 55 points. However, much has changed since those early rounds and the Tigers have found themselves in a rich vein of form, having won 3 of their last 4 matches. The first quarter started well, with the Tigers attacking the ball and tackling ferociously. Ben Nason was prominent in these early stoushes and managed to kick the first goal for the Tigers. The arm wrestle continued throughout the quarter and the Swans, who proved to be wasteful in front of goal throughout the match, went in to the quarter time huddle with a slender 3 point lead.
The second quarter continued where the first left off, however the Tigers did start to make some errors under pressure and allowed Sydney to creep into the lead through scores on turnovers. The straight kicking of the Tigers, including the continued dominance of Jack Riewoldt in the forward line and the inaccuracy of the Swans in front of the big sticks kept the Tigers well and truly in the hunt at half time, only down by two goals.
This changed in the third quarter as the Swans managed to convert more of their opportunities, McVeigh dangerous up forward and Goodes finally starting to make an impact after being invisible in the first half. When the Swans stretched their lead out to 33 points midway through the third and Deledio appeared to sustain a serious elbow injury it appeared that the Tigers were destined to go down in another respectable defeat. However, this is not the Tigers of recent history. This is not the team that has rolled over when the going gets tough. Under Dimma this is appears to be a team that will play as a team. That will continue to fight. And that is exactly what we saw in the final stages of the third quarter and the thrilling final quarter. Remarkably, in an act of amazing bravery, Deledio returned to the field and wasn't content to just make up the numbers. He continued to dominate off the half back line, cutting off forward thrusts from Sydney and repelling their attacks. He was joined in this effort by the skipper Newman whose two final quarter clutch goals were instrumental in the Tigers' victory. Special mention must also be made of Andrew Collins, who I have always seen as a goal kicking midfielder. Dimma's decision to play him deeper in the forward line appears to have been inspired as he added three goals this week to his three in the previous week. Not only did he kick three goals, but two of them came after he appeared to be knocked unconscious in the third quarter in a nasty head clash. Both goals came after great marks inside 50 and the second put the Tigers in front late in the quarter. A lead that the Swans were unable to wrestle back.
In the voting this week the PREnders have given the skipper another best Tiger on ground award with a very slender victory over Deledio. As mentioned above, the skipper was inspirational and added two key goals to his brave, composed play out of defense. Deledio was also inspirational, playing injured and dominating. Considering his two Jack Dyer medals in 2008 and 2009 it is awesome to see him take his game up a notch to become the player we all hoped he would become. His bravery, exquisite disposal and overhead prowess will certainly make him a dark horse for AA selection this year. Finally, after raving about the games of Newman, Deledio and Collins, I have failed to mention Jack's efforts. It is a testament to his recent white hot form that he can kick 5 goals in a narrow victory and only rack up the third position in the voting. Jack was again the dominant forward on the ground and maintains his lead atop the Coleman medal tally. Not only does he kick goals, but he applies enormous forward pressure for a player of his size and has an ingenious footy mind. Some of his fancy footwork on display makes me think that he must have been watching the soccer World Cup as he dribbled the oval ball around his opponents to provide himself and teammates with an advantage.
This week sees the Tigers take on Freo at Etihad. Although Freo currently occupy fourth position on the ladder a number of scribes have labelled this a danger game for the Dockers. The recent form of the Tigers and the loss of some key players for Freo in the form of Barlow and Tarrant sets this up as a very interesting contest.
Carn' the Tiges!
