Coming off a solid win against the Eagles in the previous round it was always going to be interesting to see how the Tigers backed up against a struggling Lions outfit in Brisbane. Although the important Jonathan Brown missed the match through injury the Tigers still had to contend with Fevola, who has kicked a few bags against Richmond over the past few years. As it turns out, the Tigers came to play and after Riewoldt kicked the first goal, the team never looked back, leading for the rest of the match. Jack's early goal was followed soon after by some fancy work from Titch Edwards, who has blossomed in recent times under the new coaching structure. After attempting a mark on the behind line, Titch took possession, sold the dummy to two Lions defenders, somehow keeping the ball in play before kicking a checkside kick out of the grasp of a third defender. A great goal.
The Tigers have finally appeared to shaken the dreaded 'Tiger-Nap', that quarter (or more!) where they would just stop and let the opposition take control of the match. In recent weeks the Tigers have mantained high intensity levels throughout their matches and this has been reflected in their results. Much of this is attributable to the workrate of the midfield. With Graham providing some excellent ruckwork and a tall option around the ground, coupled with the ball winning skills of Cotchin, Tuck and the continually impressive Martin, the Tigers worked over the Lions midfield and kept good supply to the forwards. In contrast to last week, where Jack was dominant, the Tigers utilised multiple forward options with Jack snaring 3 of his own, but ably assisted by Collins, who kicked some quality goals from 50/50 situations. In defence, McGuane kept Fevola invisible before Luke badly rolled his ankle and left the field for the duration of the match. It appeared that Fevola was his own worst enemy though, making errors that were baffling, mis-kicks from point blank, not making the distance from 45 metres and shanks to miss goals that he would normally score. His highlight of the night was actually a soft free kick that gifted him his only goal for the match.
In the voting this week, the PREnders clearly thought Brett Deledio was the best Tiger afield. He really seems to be gently simmering on the half back line, building towards what could be a huge second half of the season. He is racking up a lot of possession, sweeping up the ball in defence, taking big contested marks and providing excellent supply to our midfielders and forwards with his long, accurate kicking. He has now moved into outright second on the leaderboard and his ability to consistently accrue votes will keep pressure on the current leader, Jack. He must certainly be up there in the Jack Dyer medal count and could make it 3 in a row, if this form continues. The other prominent players this week included Gus Graham, who has surprised many a PRE critic with his good tap work, work around the ground and ability to take big marks at important stages of the match (including a whopping 12 this week!). The third spot was shared by two of the Tigers' key midfielders, Shane Tuck and Dustin Martin. Tucky continues his good form and appears to have cemented his place in the starting lineup. This is a credit to Tuck, who many thought might be shown the door at the end of the season. His ability to win the ball, provide a very strong presence at the contest and his apparent holstering of the 'Tucky bomb' whereby he would just aimlessly bomb it out of the cogestion has seen him move up the leaderboard. Martin was also very impressive. I am continually amazed (and thrilled) that we have an 18 year old with this strength and courage in our lineup. He has the ability to walk over much more senior and battle-hardened opponents as he clears the ball from the contest. He also appears to have an eye for goal, as he racked another this week to add to his 2010 tally. It is scary to think how dominant he might be as an in and under midfielder as he gets older, stronger and more mature.
With the Tigers having a week off with the split round it will give the boys an opportunity to rest and recover before they face the Swans in round 14. Keep checking this thread for updates as I look at some of the voting patterns we have seen in the first half of the 2010 season towards the end of next week.
