It was the 15th May 2004, sitting in the top deck of the Olympic Stand at the MCG, completely exposed to the elements, that I witnessed a 10 goal haul first hand. Matty Richardson single-handedly dismantled the Bulldogs defence that day and it was a sight to behold. A little over 6 years later, sitting in my sheltered, reserved seat in the new Olympic Stand, I witnessed my second. Matty Richardson had hung up his boots at the end of 2009, leaving an apparent vacuum in the Tigers' forward line. Stepping into that void this year has been Jack Riewoldt, who put on an absolute master display of marking and goal kicking that warmed the hearts of the Tiger faithful who had turned up to watch Richmond play against West Coast at the 'G. The first quarter was a clinic in forward line play, with the midfield providing stellar service to Jack and he rewarded their efforts by marking everything in his vicinity and kicking straight to put on 5 goals for the term. It was a great atmosphere to be part of, as I sit amongst the same group of long-suffering members every week and we have witnessed far more losses than victories. The usual routine is to experience the group frustration as the Tigers turn over the ball and the opposition slowly (or not so slowly) take the game away. Not this week. There were cheers, celebrations, laughing and the knowing looks that the Tigers were 'switched on' and that we were going to witness our first victory at home in 2010. We weren't wrong. A 6 goal to 2 first quarter set up the day and although the Eagles were able to string some goals together at different stages of the match the Tigers were never seriously threatened.
The game was won off the back of some awesome midfield dominance, with Martin, Cotchin and Tuck consistently winning the hard ball and supplying the forward line with quality inside 50s. This was coupled with great rebound off the half back line, spearheaded by the stellar efforts of Brett Deledio, who, even considering his 2 Jack Dyer Medals, is playing the best footy of his career. That half back line looks much better IMO with Dan Connors provding run and long, raking kicks into the half forward line. He will only improve as he comes back up to speed after his club-imposed suspension. Other key areas of note were the great linking play of Matty White and Ben Nason, who were workhorses and ran all match long and the much maligned Jake King who completely shut down Shannon Hurn and found plenty of the pill for himself. Sure, he kicked a couple of balls out of bounds on the full and got pinged for holding it once, but his good far outweighed his bad today and he'll never die wondering.
In the voting this week, it goes without saying that Jack again dominated the polls. Like the previous round, he appeared on every ballot and has now established a considerable break at the top of the leaderboard. It is great to see a 21 year old key forward as our best player, an area that many thought we would be deficient in. Now we just need to get support around him. However, with Griffiths and Astbury getting game time, the future looks bright in this regard. Brett Deledio was also prominent in the voting this week as the PREnders recognise the quality that he has been providing to our side and the importance of his rebound from the defensive 50. Although Jack is dominating the polls at this stage of the season, the rise of Deledio to the number 3 position will keep him honest as Lids knows how to close out a season strongly. Martin also polled well, mainly off the back of a 14 possession first quarter in which he monstered his elder opponents and kicked as classy a goal as you would ever want to see. Dusty has it all, strength, vision, courage, intensity and a booming kick. Adding him to Cotchin in the midfield and the re-emergence of Tuck has played a large part in the Tigers dominance in the clearances this season. Considering how young the core of that midfield actually is, the future looks very bright for Richmond in that area.
This week sees the Tigers travel to the Gabba to take on a Brown-less Lions outfit. I am very interested to see how the Tigers back up from such a good win in the previous round. The Lions have been vulnerable in recent weeks and a Richmond victory is certainly not out of the question. Confidence can be a funny thing.
