Round 11 saw the Tigers taken on one of their bogey sides in St Kilda, a team that have defeated them in their last 11 encounters. To make matters worse, the Richmond home game was played at Etihad Stadium, the actual home of the opposition. The Saints have established themselves as one of the premier sides in the competition over the past few seasons and even with the loss of their talisman player Nick Riewoldt, they have still managed to effectively shut down their opposition through tough, uncompromising football. The way Friday night's match started off, it appeared that they were going to continue this trend as they kept the Tigers goalless until the latter end of the second quarter. After kicking two early goals, the Saints threatened to run away with the match, but to the Tiger's credit, they managed to shut St Kilda down and keep the margin close at quarter time. The Saints managed to get a breakaway in the second quarter, hammering on the first five goals, to lead by 7 goals to nil. However, an error gifted Jack Riewoldt his first goal of the afternoon and a couple of goals late in the quarter kept the half time margin to a handy, if not manageable lead to the Saints of 31 points.
The second half started ominously, as a Nahas turnover in the defensive 50 gifted a goal to Stephen Milne. However, the game turned after this point and the central player in the turn around was Jack Riewoldt. Jack has been in a purple patch over the past month or so and was sitting in 5th position in the Coleman medal leaderboard prior to this match. In the third quarter Jack put on a clinic of one on one marking in the Tigers forward line, taking a number of grabs and providing a real headache for the Saints defenders. He was aided by Collins, who kicked a ripping goal, nutmegging the Saints defense and scoring a soccer goal to bring the Tigers within 12 points, after trailing by close to 40 points at the beginning of the quarter. However, the Saints managed to regroup late in the quarter, kicked a couple of goals, stem the Tiger juggernaut and maintain the lead going into the final quater. That third quarter was one of the truly exciting moments of the 2010 season, up there with the exciting conclusion to the Hawks match a few weeks earlier. In the final quarter the Saints managed to regain control and run away to a comfortable victory, mainly off the back of a great performance from Milne, a player that the Tigers have often found difficult to contain. Overall, the Tigers were very competitive in the areas of contested footy and tackling, however their finishing skills really let them down as they constantly turned the ball over after clearing it from the packs. If they can iron this out of their game, which should come with experience, they have the basis for a solid, competitive game plan that will see them rise up the ladder in coming seasons.
In the voting this week, the six goal haul of Jack Riewoldt was richly rewarded, as he appeared on all 59 ballots cast this week. As mentioned above, Jack was in scintillating form and has been the best forward in the competition over the past month. Highly impressive from a 21 year old key forward. That result allowed Jack to jostle back into the top position on the leaderboard, overtaking Cotchin, whose impact on the game was stemmed by a tight tag from Jones. The skipper was also prominent in the voting as his stellar 2010 season continues to impress. He has been playing a very composed game out of defense and using the ball sublimely. Coupled with his unquestioned courage, the Tigers captain has really silenced his critics this season, as reflected in his current position in 3rd place on the leaderboard at the halfway mark of the competition. Dustin Martin also featured in the voting this week, off the back of another strong showing in the Tiger midfield. This match was the first game that I have seen Dusty close up (one of the benefits of Etihad) and I was taken aback at just how physically developed he is for his age. To put it bluntly, the boy is a bull and he has the game to go with that physique. The comparisons that have been made with Joel Selwood in terms of the skill and hardness in such a young player seem well founded. It is a pity that he isn't eligible for the Rising Star award due to his indiscretion earlier in the season, as I have little doubt he would have featured.
Dimma has put the call out for the Tigers to come and support the team against the Weagles this Sunday and I, for one, will be there. It is the first time for quite a while that the Tigers have gone into a match as favourites with the bookies (and the first time I have tipped them since the Melbourne match earlier this season), so I look forward to seeing the boys notch up their first victory at home for 2010!
