It may have taken 10 matches and wet, muddy conditions that haven't been witnessed in an AFL match for some time, but the 2010 Tigers finally came together to notch their first victory of the season. It was an emphatic one at that, with a 47 point drubbing of Port Adelaide at AAMI stadium, limiting the Power to a total of 3 goals for the match and their lowest ever score of 30 points.
The game itself was won through tough, competitive footy, with the Tigers absolutely smashing the Power in the clearances. This was mainly accomplished through the work of Tuck, Cotchin and Martin, who monstered their opponents, put their head over the ball all day long and were generally cleaner with their possessions. On a day where goals were at a premium due to the wet, muddy conditions the Tigers played a style of footy that maximised their opportunities. They constantly moved the ball forward, caused stoppages and won the clearances to move the ball forward again. This style of play proved very effective in the first half and the Tigers, especially Riewoldt, were able to capitalise and score goals which kept the pressure on the opposition.
The Power obviously received a blasting at half time because they came out in the third quarter a much more competitive side and dominated the inside 50s for the quarter. To the Tigers' credit they were able to limit the damage and only lost the quarter by 4 points to go into the final quarter with a lead that, given the conditions, was always going to be difficult to catch. As it turned out the final quarter was essentially one way as the Tigers blew out the lead to win by 47 points. The singing of the song for the first time in 2010 will be a moment that any true Tiger would have cherished.
In the voting this week Tucky was the clear favourite. As has been mentioned on a few threads, Tuck is as good as anyone in the AFL in these sorts of conditions. His ball winning ability, strength in the packs and ability to clear the packs was evident throughout the match. His disposal deficiencies weren't as much of a problem in a game that relied more on getting the ball forward at all costs and Tuck's strength was instrumental in the Tigers' victory. Cotchin continued to rack up votes and now stands atop the leaderboard. The Chimp was awesome in this match, clearing the ball well and his clean ability to pick up the ball and spread from the pack was a real stand out on the day. The skipper also polled well as he continues to stamp his influence on the game. Newman played well off of half back and provided a lot of the defensive pressure and drive out of the forward 50, especially early in the match when the game was in the balance. Newman has really stepped up over the past few weeks and has led his young team by example. From someone who from the outside had doubters over his ability to act as captain, he has really silenced his critics, with some great on field leadership.
This week sees the Tigers play their only game of Friday night footy this season against the Saints at Etihad Stadium. The Saints have really been a bogey side for the Tigers, who have been beaten by St Kilda in their past 10 meetings. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers bounce back after a victory against a side that hasn't been 100% convincing since the serious injury to their skipper earlier this season.
Carn' the Tiges!
