Events conspired to prevent me from attending the Dreamtime at the 'G match against Essendon last Saturday. This was the first Dreamtime match that I have missed since its inception, so this week's report is based on events as they appeared on TV. The game was preceded by a celebration of indigenous culture which appeared on TV to be bigger than some of the past shows, with music (as usual) and a display of animals that play a role in indigenous Australian folklore. It was great to see a big crowd showed up as this game seems to get bigger every year.

The game itself started with a soft free for Jack Riewoldt before the opening bounce, which he wasn't able to convert. This prompted the comment "He's a spud" from a Bomber-supporting mate of mine, to which I responded "a spud that kicked 6 against the Bombers last time they met". By the end of the night I was at least able to constantly rub that comment in my mate's face; a small highlight on an otherwise depressing evening. The opening stages of the match were quite tight, but once Essendon scored their first goal the floodgates opened and by the first siren the contest was essentially over. A seven goal head start was always going to be difficult, if not impossible, for a young Tigers outfit to peg back and although they did make headway in the second quarter, the Bombers always had a response and managed to keep Richmond at a comfortable distance for the duration of the match. Much of this dominance came from the ruck division as David Hille played a ripping match. He was influential around the ground, teaching young Ty Vickery a footy lesson and although he battled manfully, Gus Graham wasn't able to kerb his influence. Hille was rightly awarded the Yiooken trophy for best on ground. The real positive for the night was that the Tigers never capitulated, even though the possibility of victory seemed remote. After getting jumped in the first quarter, the Tigers matched the Bombers in the final three quarters, with both teams kicking 12 goals each. This new-found steel is something that I have noticed in most of the matches they have played in under Hardwick (with the exception of the Geelong debacle) that wasn't often seen in the teams of recent years.

In the voting this week the clear winner was Jack Riewoldt, who has reclaimed the top spot on the leaderboard after a masterclass in contested marking and goal kicking. Jack was at his cocky best, plucking marks at will and kicking straight, to end up with 6 goals for the match. It was a real insight into the potential that Jack has as a forward option and silenced his critics in the best possible way. At only 21 years of age he represents an important cog in our forward line structure and with the assistance of Griffiths/Astbury/Morton in the future the foundations for a potent forward line are in place at Tigerland. Cotchin has also continued to rack up votes and solidify his position in second place on the leaderboard. He moves so well in traffic, is a great extractor and clearance player and the good form of Gus Graham since his return has allowed him to rove beautifully to the taps aimed in his direction. As always, Cotch oozes class and it is great to see him string some games together. Deledio was also prominent in the voting as he continues to play an important role off half back, setting up play with his pinpoint, long passes and orchestrating the Tiger's attack out of defense.

This week sees the Tigers head interstate (again!) to take on the Power at AAMI stadium. Good luck to Griffiths as he makes his debut in the Yellow and Black!

Carn' the Tiges!
