Round 9 saw an improved Tigers outfit fall just short of toppling the 2008 premiers in a ferocious match at the 'G. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, perfect conditions, which at first glance may have appeared to favour the Hawks with their side close to full strength. The inclusion of Franklin, Mitchell and Burgoyne, not to mention a second ruckman in Skipper, had many worried that the Tigers were in for another mauling, similar to the one inflicted by Hawthorn during the preseason NAB cup. As it turned out though the Tigers had come to play and were not afraid to mix it up with the 'unsociable' Hawks.
The first quarter saw the Tigers kick the first 3 goals and get a jump on Hawthorn, who failed to convert their own early opportunities. However, a few errors crept into the Richmond game and gifted points back to their opponents. This trend continued in the second quarter and it appeared, as we have seen in other games this season, that Richmond, having conceded the lead, would lie down and cop a belting. As it turns out the Tigers were able to hold their own, with the midfield dominant in the clearances and the forward line forcing turnovers through the most intense pressure we have yet seen from the new-look Richmond side. This midfield dominance and numerous forward 50 entries was balanced by conceding cheap goals to the Hawks and the game remained tight throughout the second half. When the Hawks skipped out to the biggest lead of the match half way through the final quarter, once again it appeared as if the Tigers had finally capitulated. However, efforts from the skipper, Newman, playing a great match, Cotchin in the midfield getting clearances and Jack Riewoldt playing a lone hand as key forward managed to get the Tigers back into the match. When Jack took the mark of the day and coolly slotted his 4th goal with 2 minutes left to bring the margin to 3 points, it was anyone's match. With the grog squad in full voice for the first time this season, Hawthorn managed to tie up the ball and bleed seconds off the clock. Tuck managed to take possession just outside 50, weave through some traffic, only to be cut down by a desperate diving tackle from Sam Mitchell.....holding the ball. That proved to be the match and the Tigers lost a match that they statistically dominated for long periods.
In the voting this week, the PRE crowd showed up in good numbers, perhaps due to it being a home match, perhaps because they felt the Tigers deserved votes for a much improved four quarter effort. Whatever the reason, there were 3 players that clearly stood out to the PREnders: Newman, Cotchin and Jackson. The voting has caused a number of changes to the leaderboard, with the top 13 players all moving up or down this week. At the top Riewoldt has been overtaken by Jackson and Cotchin, while Newman has shot into the top 5. This movement was off the back of one of the best games of the skipper's career. After being cut open early in the match while desperately going for the ball, Newman was prominent throughout the match. Solid defensively and providing run from defence, Newman also hurt the Hawks on the scoreboard kicking two goals from outside 50, including a crunch goal late in the final quarter when the match was in the balance. Cotchin also played arguably his best game for the club, in everything and dominating the clearances he racked up the contested possessions and was the primary reason that the Tigers owned the midfield for most of the match. He made a few disposal errors, but when you are playing under that sort of midfield pressure that isn't too surprising. Overall, an outstanding match from a player who I see as the next captain of this club. Finally, Jackson was recognised for a tough, hard display of footy in the midfield. Jackson wasn't afraid to throw his weight around and attacked the ball and the opposition ball carrier ferociously thoughout the day. Unfortunately Daniel will miss the next three matches for taking the bait of Campbell Brown and throwing what some have described as a headbutt. Many complain about the decision making of Jackson, but he has been an important cog in our midfield and his presence will be missed during his suspension. Other players that deserve a mention include Deledio, who continues to flourish in his role off half-back. He racked up possessions, especially in the final quarter and used his long kicks to the team's advantage. Jack Riewoldt also deserves a mention for showing improved poise in front of goal to kick 4 goals and provide intense forward pressure.
The Tigers face the Bombers this Saturday night for the Dreamtime at the 'G match. Richmond usually put up a competitive effort against Essendon, so hopefully they can build on last Sunday's four quarter effort and notch their first win for 2010.
Carn' the Tiges!
