Another week, another road trip for the Tigers. This time Richmond headed over to AAMI stadium to face the only other side yet to record a win in 2010, the Crows. The bookies had Adelaide remarkably short for a team that has been in such poor form this season, but it really reflects how non-competitive the Tigers have been over four quarters in the matches they have played this season. As it turns out the young Tigers came out all guns blazing, desperate for the contested ball and tackling with ferocity. The team clearly had something to prove after their meek capitulation against the Cats the previous week. For the first time this season, I witnessed real forward pressure from the Tigers and they forced the Crows into turnovers inside 50, resulting in goals for Richmond. Unfortunately, some of the chances the Tigers had were wasted and this kept the Crows within touch and kept the scores tight throughout the first half.
Like the Freo game earlier this season, the Tigers took a slender lead into half time, however they had been more competitive over the entire two quarters in this match compared to that previous game. Leading by 8 points, the Tigers were always in danger of letting their lead slip and although they failed to record a goal in the third quarter, they limited the Crows to 2 goals, conceding the lead but giving themselves a chance in the final quarter. When Jack Riewoldt scored his second goal to level the scores with ~15 minutes to play, it felt like the Tigers were actually in with a real chance. However, things went completely pear-shaped from that point and the Tigers barely managed to touch the ball for the remainder of the match. From scores level, to a 50 point pasting in 15 minutes says it all. Very disappointing and probably the first loss that really hurt; it was a game that we just have to look at the positives the young Tigers displayed over the first half.
In the voting this week 'Titch' Edwards was the clear favourite. As my 3 year old's favourite player (she heard the commentators mention his name and came sprinting into join me during the match proclaiming "I see number 10, Titch!) I am an unabashed fan. Edwards has been moved out of the backline and into the forward line, drifting into the middle on occasion. This clearly suits his game and his ability to move in traffic, his creative disposal and his quick hands stood out in this match. It is clear that he has been doing some 'training' in the backline this season, however I see him as high quality half forward flanker that can drift into the midfield. He is the sort of player that would be
really good in a good team. As the Tigers develop into such a team over the coming seasons Titch has an important role to play.
Trent Cotchin also racked up the votes this week and has moved into the top 4 over all. His first half was electric and I was pencilling in his name for the 3 votes. He was in everything during that half with his strong fend and ability to burst away from a contest prominent throughout. He certainly faded in the second half, however as he develops a tank it is clear that we will have a very special player on our hands. His re-signing earlier this season was critical for the future Tigers team, with this kid having captain material written all over him.
Robin Nahas also polled well this week and has continued his sparkling form since returning after a being dropped to the VFL earlier in the season. His desperation and tackling were a big part of the forward pressure that the Tigers were able to apply and he almost single handedly kept the Tigers in the match during periods of the third quarter.
The Tigers are back home this weekend as the face the struggling Hawks at the 'G. It feels like a very long time since we had a home match, so I am looking forward to spending Sunday afternoon watching the match. The Hawks have been bolstered by the return of some big names in Mitchell and Franklin, along with the Hawthorn debut of Burgoyne. The Tigers regain the services of Nathan Foley as they attempt to cause an upset and record their first win of the season.
Carn' the Tiges!
