A warm Sunday afternoon welcomed 42000+ Richmond and Melbourne supporters for their Round 4 clash at the 'G. The Tigers started very well, kicking the first 2 goals and maintaining the lead for the majority of the first quarter. Unfortunately, errors and turnovers crept into the game and Melbourne were able to capitalise on these mistakes. This, in combination with good set shot goal kicking by the Dees ensured a solid 17 point lead to Melbourne by the first break.

The second quarter was probably the best footy the Tigers have played in 2010, as they refused to allow Melbourne to have any significant possession. Unfortuately, terms like "best" are relative and although the Tigers were dominant in possession, they weren't able to convert many of their opportunties and allowed Melbourne to maintain a slim lead going into half time. This proved costly as the Dees rallied in the third quarter, while the Tigers had their familiar nap and by the end of the third quarter the match was over as a contest. 7 goals, 4 behinds, 46 points to 2 points sums it up well. The Tigers appeared to wilt in the heat and the ferocity and run that was seen in the first half was completely absent. A very full MCC members area was in ecstasy, applauding everyone from players to the coaches to the runners as they ran through the interchange area. Clearly the Demon faithful were aware of the chance of a rare Melbourne victory. This coupled with the warm weather preventing snow in the alps provided the perfect storm for a bumper MCC crowd.

The final quarter was more even, the Tigers kicking 4 goals to 5 as the Demons ran away with an easy victory and the Tigers had to wear another 50+ point hiding. This time from a team that finished with the wooden spoon in 2009 and whom they were very competitive with for most of the afternoon.

In the polls this week, the stand out was clearly Kelvin Moore. Handed a huge task with the suspension or injury of most of his usual fellow defenders, Moore had to rally a makeshift back line consisting of inexperienced (Dea, Post, Rance) and fill in (Deledio, Cotchin, Tuck) defenders. This coming off the back of a disappointing 2009 for Kel presented quite a challenge. However, Moore proved to be up for the challenge and played one of his best games, if not his best since his break out 2008 season. He appeared on 56 of the 58 ballots cast this week, a very impressive return that has catapulted him into the top 5 on the leaderboard. Jack Riewoldt also polled strongly and I daresay he would have eclipsed Kel if he had managed to convert his set shots. He finished with 3 goals for the day, but could easily have had 5 or 6 had he been kicking straight. Goal kicking aside, Jack worked extremely hard presenting all day, saving at least one goal through a key smother in defence and was an obvious vocal leader on the field and in the huddles during the breaks. This has moved him into equal leader in the polls with Daniel Jackson, in what is shaping to be a close year in the PRE Player of the Year awards. Ben Nason has also continued his impressive start to his AFL career, working hard, putting his body on the line, tackling ferociously and keeping a cool head to slot a nice goal. His consistency has seen him maintain his 7th position on the ladder. Special mention should be made of Dave Astbury's debut where he showed that he has the tools to be an important player in the developing Tiger forward line, slotting 3 goals, including a ripper set-shot from the boundary in the final quarter.

This week sees the Tigers travel west to face the in-form Dockers at Subiaco. It is amazing what can happen in the space of a single season as you probably recall that Richmond beat Freo when they last met at Subiaco in round 10 of 2009. Now the bookies have Freo as unbackable favourites, paying $1.03 for the win and the hapless Tigers are paying over $12 for the victory. It will be great to see the kids continue their development and to see Foley return to the side after an extended period on the sidelines with his injury problems.
