Round 3 saw the Tigers make their first interstate trip for 2010 as they travelled to Sydney to take on the Swans at the SCG. The start of the first quarter was actually quite promising with the Tigers moving the ball well and freeing up options inside 50. However, although we had the first two real opportunities at scoring, both of these were squandered and the floodgates opened at the other end. It was an odd game in that way; we produced plenty of inside 50s, however, our inability to convert these, nor apply any real forward pressure, meant the Swans constantly rebounded and more often than not, scored from these chances. The end result was not pretty to watch. I watched the game on TV and was bracing myself for a goaless first half from the Tigers. It was only an opportunist goal from Shane Edwards that prevented this from happening, but by this stage the damage was done: a 10 goal to 1 first half in favour of the Swans and any chance of an upset long dead.
The second half saw a better performance as the Tigers started to harass the opposition, cause the occasional turn over and actually convert a number of opportunities on the scoreboard. The Swans only just beat Richmond in the 3rd quarter and the Tigers actually won their first quarter of the year 3.4 to 3.2 to only lose the second half by 3 points. It feels like it is going to be a season of small victories, so it was something to take away from an otherwise dismal display.
In the voting this week the easy victor was the 3rd gamer, Dustin Martin. This was a well-earned accolade, as he worked hard in the midfield, made good decisions and showed off his thumping kick with both his preferred and non-preferred. He could easily have ended up with a couple of goals if he had been a bit more accurate. Daniel Jackson again polled well and continues to lead the voting at this early stage of the season. Jacko shows real grit on the field and a desperation that is not always apparent in some of his teammates. He works hard and appears to be a real onfield leader. His decision making still lets him down from time to time, but the voters on PRE have recognised his role as the muscle in the Tiger midfield. Finally, for the 3rd week running, Dan Connors put in a solid, brave display to poll double figures in the PRE vote. Of all the negative events of the past few days, the loss of Connors for the first half of the season is the biggest blow. As I mentioned earlier this will be a season of small victories and improvements. The form of Dan Connors this season had been one of those real highlights. Let's hope his suspension serves as a real wake up call for him and he comes back well.
With the 'events' of the past week and subsequent suspensions, we will be seeing a few debutants in the Yellow & Black this Sunday against the Dees. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers fare against a side that has struggled in recent seasons, albeit a side that has shown good form recently, including a victory over the Crows last week. I'll be there at the 'G on Sunday to cheer on the new players and see the Tigers continue to improve.
Carn' the Tiges!
