2007 - Preseason Preview - 8th of 16 - Richmond

Wow, good post CHF, I don't usually read long ones but that is a good one.

This year may be telling for a few of our younger players, I hope that Jackson finds some confidence, I am also hoping Tambling can raise the bar a little.

I reckon you're almost spot on CHF.

The only difference is that I think Hawthorn were a little better placed than us in 2004.

Two different courses. Time will tell who went the better road.

I mostly agree with your post except i think you underrate Tivendale. He had a decent season in '06 and I think he would be one of the better wingers in the league. Apart from that, yeah your spot on.

The Tiges are an interesting and challenging proposition entering the 2007 season.

They have most of the problems of 2006, further compounded by ongoing injury concerns.

Simmonds has an ankle full of cutlery. Newman's Sheffield collection is a bit higher. Thursfield is coming off a car-crash knee. Rumours abide about N.G.Brown. Richardson has already done a hammie. Knobel and Ray Hall have had troubled pre-seasons. Youngsters Casserley and Peterson have already been ruled out for the preseason. Schulz has had a preseason injury as has JON. Kent Kingsley is sidelined without having donned the colours. Have I missed anybody? The injury gods aint. And they seem to have made an example of poor young Coughlan.

It's not a great start but it's still March and luck from here on would be a more than satisfactory compensation.

What's changed?
Richmond has added experience in the off season through Kingsley and young Polak, although it's not clear where they will deploy the former Docker. And retired veterans Andy Kellaway, Mark Chaffey and Greg Stafford.

What's stayed the same?
If midfields were motels, you wouldn't want to be paying the power bill at the Richmond Travel Inn. There's been a vacancy light burning there for twenty years. Discounts for group bookings.

Kane Johnson is the only one who can do the job in any company. Beats quality opponents and has a real presence around the packs.

In the absence of Coughlan (perhaps permanent) he is the only genuine AFL class mid at Wallet's disposal. He had some excellent games in 06, most notably when he took young Shaun Burgoyne to school but was effective each week and was up to the challenge physically. He can only do so much but at least it's one slot we've got covered.

Shane Tuck had a few niggles in his second full season and looked at sea in the middle against the better sides. Had a tough role for such an inexperienced player but toiled. He wouldn't have had to carry that burden in his second year at any other club IMO.

Greg Tivendale had a good season, running in defensive roles and winning some leather. Fully stretched in the role but did okay.

If this were Richmond's best trio for 2007 you could safely write the Tigers off right now.

But there were some very encouraging signs for us in 2006.

I don't think anybody foresaw Polo's spectacular debut. Smashed a more experienced opponent (Stanton) and collected thirty possies and three goals in the process. He was let down by inexperience at times but his best was a revelation. He's a candidate.

Deledio kept getting the ball and was smart with it at times. He often looked lost and seemed to run out of steam (usually when the other side had the ball) but this is a kid who can get a kick against the best. He had a few niggles and got some close attention but again showed how good he could be.

Nathan Foley had to get time on the ball. He was able to get hands on the ball with remarkable frequency but was not able to make incisive plays. He's had a big preseason and if he keeps improving, he'll make a midfielder one day. He's one who could take advantage of the lack of competition for the roving spot.

Richard Tambling has been given time to settle in. Was used as a forwaard in his first two seasons but the panel seems to have come around to the idea that he is best used around the ball. He can win the ball, evade the tacklers, find space and then set a team-mate to space. But how often can he do it? And can he run both ways? Could be anything. Unlike most of his teammates, has class.

Chris Newman has had a good preseason despite a broken leg in 2006. He might be able to give the Tiges some help in run-with roles. I wouldn't put too much pressure on him to improve this year.

Andy Krakouer seems to be about where he was this time last year but has offered some diversity to the blend. Not the way forward, you'd reckon.

Kel Moore has played run-with roles in the preseason with some success. Has speed.

White, Hartigan, Casserley, Howat might surprise.

The midfield is our biggest problem. Maybe, one day soon, it will be a strength.

You're a true wordsmith Jack, it was a pleasure to read that review. :gotigers

Joel Bowden - quality player who'll be around for 4ish years.
Patrick Bowden - not as good as his brother, but appears to be ok in a role where he doesn't have to be 100% accountable.
Nathan G. Brown - Has to be real question marks over his future given the latest set back.
Travis Casserly - Too young to assess his future just yet, but at lower levels has shown great foot skills.
Andrew Collins - Too young to assess
Daniel Connors - Too young to assess
Mark Coughlan - Has been unable to get a high performance, full season out of him. Have we seen his best in a sad series of misfortunes?
Brett Deledio - The bright light
Shane Edwards - Needs to get bigger. Looks promising.
Nathan Foley - Could be a real big season for Axel.
Darren Gaspar - Fading away. Will it be gracefully? Game looks to be passing him at a rapid rate.
Ray Hall - Hard trier who simply lacks the class to be an impact at AFL level. How long he stays listed will indicate the strength of our list.
Brent Hartigan - Behind the 8 ball from the younger running brigade. Might be trade bait at end of the year if he can't establish himself in the regular 22.
Cleve Hughes - Promising player who needs to perform consistently at VFL level to pressure for a spot.
Chris Hyde - Hard working strong body, who lacks the ability to punish the opposition with his disposal. I think he lacks the level of skills required to work inside, where his physical nature would benefit him the most. Another who may be under pressure to retain his position should we draft classies youngsters to play his position.
Daniel Jackson - Needs to impose himself this year. What's his best position? I can't see him "clicking". All the physical talents, but lacks the smarts.
Kane Johnson - Imposed himself as a better captain last year without Campbell's presence, and did a great job as a tagger. Another player who's more heart than talent. Can he play a full 22 games?
Kent Kingsley - For the life of me I cannot understand why we drafted him. Very short term solution. Injury prone, poor shot at goal.
Trent Knobel - Great tap ruckman with limited skills around the ground. Will need to get over injury concerns and demonstrate his worth to the club, as young Graham and Pattison knock on the door.
Andrew Krakouer - An engimatic, inconsistent player with great skills. Last year of his contract. Will need to show a more consistent year and lift his intensity on the field. Seems to have lots of talent, but not the work ethic to utilise it frequently.
Luke McGuane - From all reports has had a good preseason. Has had bad luck with injury in his first year, but may be about to take the opportunity left from Andrew Kellaway's "retirement" and make it his own spot.
Danny Meyer - Classly small man. Will he get enough game time in the seniors to justify his position in the draft?
Kelvin Moore - Being pushed hard by Wallace as a defender. Has yet to convince me he has the talent to take this position by the scruff of the neck. Last chance to prove himself.
Chris Newman - Courageous small man. One of the shining lights on Richmond's list before he was injured. Can he re-capture that form?
Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls - Skills by foot have been questioned by some here since arriving, although this was meant to be a highlight when he was drafted. Has grown a little, and if he can add bulk to his frame, might end up being an accidental Key position player.
Adam Pattison - Great last game in the preseason against Collingwood. Has a big motor, and although often criticised for being slow, is not as bad as it may appear. Could be a great crash and bash Forward/Ruck.
Carl Peterson - Too early to assess this young guy. Needs to get over his OP issues and get on the park, before we can say much about him.
Kayne Pettifer - Lost momentum after the mid year break. Needs to step up again, given the question marks over Brown. Must maintain consistency.
Graham Polak - Big chance for Graham to overcome a troubled start to his career, and show the pre-draft ratings of him were accurate. Won't get a better opportunity than at the height challenged Tigers.
Dean Polo - Another year in his development. Lacks polish with his disposal, but could be an important part of the Tigers midfield in the years to come.
Andrew Raines - One great year last year. Needs to back it up, and show continued improvement, to prove it wasn't a fluke.
Matthew Richardson - Enigmatic forward for the tigers, who is often the heartbeat of the club. Can count on him for 16-18 games, and 40-50 goals. Will win a match or two buy himself, but is in the decline of his career. How long can he continue?
Jack Riewoldt - Cheeky, cocky young Tall. Had a couple of good games in the VFL last year, and will look to add to those this year for Coburg. May get a couple of cameo appearances if injuries for Tigers go well. Will play a lot if they don't.
Jay Schulz - Lots of question marks for this young Tall. Can he consistently hold down a key position for the Tigers, who are crying for someone, to put their hand up, and help take over as Richo's career draws to a close.
Troy Simmonds - Delayed start to the year could mean the big fella won't hit his straps until mid season. Don't look for a repeat of last year, given he has missed so much of the preseason. Richmond needs him back asap to be competitive.
Richard Tambling - Living in the shadow of Lance Franklin at the moment. Will he start to turn potential into performance. Really needs to step up and deliver, to give the Richmond faithful some hope for the future.
Will Thursfield - Will hopefully be brought back slowly by the club. This will depend on how well Gaspar can play at AFL level, and how injury resistant he stays. Thursfield looks to have all the goods. Hopefully the knee injury hasn't robbed him of his speed and athleticism.
Greg Tivendale - How? Enigmatic midfielder with poor decision making skills. No right side at all. When "on song" can be incredibly damaging. Hasn't been damaging however since Adam was a boy.
Shane Tuck - Hard working inside midfielder. Can he bring more to the table now that Coughlan is injured? Lacks the ability to really hurt the opposition with the ball.
Matthew White - Tough, young small who had a great first year. Will look to back it up with improved performance this year.

I'd say overall, although our list is young, we lack a fair bit of talent. We have several midfielders who might be tough, or hard working, who just aren't damaging enough with the ball. At the other end, we have drafted some skillful youth, who are too small/light to be able to contribute regularly. This is pretty much the common thread through our list. Most of our talls are either skill deficient (Gaspar, Hall, Knobel) or just getting older (Richo). The other end of the spectrum, we don't have a lot of young talls, and those we do have are speculative, or simply too young to make an impact.

I'd say our list is fairly mediocre at the moment, with lots of turnover still to come, and we'd finish about 12-10th.

Wonder how this analysis will look after all the drafts are completed.

Much improved IMO
