1987 ekkkkkkkkkkkk

Thought I'd revist this topic, for no particular reason.
I remember 87 for the two consecutive games Richmond was leading by almost 7 goals against Collingwood & Swans respectively. In both games, Richmond managed to surrender a healthy lead mid way through the 3rd term, only to capitulate in similar circumstances.

Richmond lost the following week to Melbourne (in the week the Demons won the Night Grand Final).
Richmond could only manage their next win at Princess Park against Fitzroy.

I failed to watch many games after this point, however, I ventured to the G in August to watch the return match against Melbourne. What an absolute horror. Richmond were 'insipid'.
I can never forget the bloke behind me shouting "Kick the bloody thing" all day long - They just didn't know how to!

What was the game at the G with Rioli coming back from injury against Bummers. Must have been '86 and TJ instructed all his players to "Handball to Rioli at all costs". Essen players luved it - all they had to do was jump all over Maurice whose waving his hands frantically "No...no...kick it...don't give it to me...no"
Didn't have the same effect as Barassi's call back in 1970.
Also wasn't that WCE game over at Subi (I remember listening to it on the radio because I couldn't go (to WA)).

That handball saga was an absolute joke back then.

It was like watching the keystone cops going through their paces and it was so predicable.

In a number of games a small group of us on the wing, would be half tanked & scream.. "HANDBALL " repeatably and laughing at our team. And sure enough the handball happened after our cry, when a kick was the better option.

didnt we thump Fitzroy in the last game of the season in 1987 ?

No, we got pumped by Brisbane to claim the "spoon".
We beat Fitzroy in the last game of the year in 88. That was Knighter's first game & remember Gary Pert doing a knee.

- Wallace rushed into the side R3 against Essendon after not even being named as an emergency; kicks 4 goals, we win & get $500 fine & Sheedy is filthy; season highlight
- run down 3 times in the first 5 rounds from 'unbeatable' positions; TJ tearing his hair out was R5 when led by 46 points late in Q3 v Sydney; worst umpiring I can remember
- Wallace loses form & TJ selects him in the 2s; TW doesn't show up & says he is injured (memory is not clear on this and will stand corrected)
- we kick one goal to time-on in the last quarter against Carlton in the mud at MCG before adding 3 face-savers
- Darryl Cowie career highlight - takes big mark near the behind post against WC at MCG; goals & we win by 4 points
- R22 Friday night playoff against Bears at the MCG for the spoon; they were still burning after KB had tipped them to finish last in the media before the first game; we kicked 2 in 2 minutes, everyone thought "Here we go!" before things fell apart and Lee and Weightman started whacking blokes; Geoff Raines is one of the whackees

Depressing to think about even this many years on & hoping the current crop can deliver us from these evil memories.

Hey all,

I couldn't sleep last night and was watching Fox Footy and on the show 'from the vault' it showed the North Melbourne v Richmond game from round 21. I just have a few questions and comments about it since i was only a kid back then and had no idea how to analyse the game as a 6-7 year old.

Anyway here goes...

The ball seemed to bounce a hell of a lot higher than it does today, and I noticed that HEAPS of players from both teams were dropping overhead uncontested marks (even good players like Mark Lee and Michael Roach). It was a sunny day and not wet so I don't see why that happened. Has the ball since changed in size/shape??

We kept up with the Roos for 3 quarters and they ran away with it in the last quarter to win by about 5 goals or so. I noticed that a lot of our players would do the Nick Daffy style kick over the shoulder without looking at who they were kicking it to.

I now understand the Mark Eustice/Useless joke, gosh he was terrible.

Who was Michael Thompson? He looked pretty bulky/toned and tall and yet he was playing on the wing. Jeff Hogg was playing on a half back flank/wing as a tagger too which seemed odd to me because he too was a big boy.

Gee Weightman was all class. Mitchell was lightning quick. Egan (my fav player when i was a kid) was our most exciting forward in that game and took some awesome grabs but couldn't kick straight. The Krakouer brothers were quiet but everytime they touched the ball a goal would result.

Who were players like Notting and Palm? I've never heard of them but they looked pretty good in this game.

Didn't get to see Jess, he injured himself in the first quarter. Rioli looked quick through the midfield. Mark Lee got quite a few clearances too. Pity our half forward line was so hopeless with no structure.

Also is 'Richard Nixon' the one and only Ricky Nixon player-manager? I thought he played with the Demons? Different R.Nixon?

At the end of the game, Ron Barassi (host of 'from the vault') mentioned that Richmond got the spoon and had about 7 losses by 21 points or less in 1987. But watching that game made me think that footy was far less tactical back then. All i could see was both teams bombing the ball long and tagging their opponents closely. Should a 1987 Richmond play against a 2004 Richmond team I'd put my money on the 2004 tigers to win hands-down.

Different guy. Our Richard Nixon sadly died in a car accident 10-15 years ago.

Richard Nixon ended up playing coach of Warrnambool but was killed in car accident in SA.
Ricky Nixon player manager played for Blues, Saints and Hawks

Thomson recruited from Essendon, ended up playing fb before being sacked from club after r3

Palm was solid bp from WA but 87/88 was his last season. Notting was a battling bald man.
