watched the last half of the eagles vs tigers match from 1987.
32 pts up at 3/4 and lost giving the eagles their 1st win in the vfl.
some great tigers played that day.
tim notting,chris burton,des ryan,brendan bower,micheal thompson,neil pert,??? gowie,mark eustice[useless],phil egan to name a few.

along side of them were some not so great tigers in. mark lee, dale weightman, micheal pickering, marice rioli ;D

What are you doing J2R? :'( Even after all this time, I don't think I could bring myself to watch that again. There are some wounds that should never be re-opened.

There's an indentation in mum's coffee table where my fist met with table. Well ... maybe not, but I sadly remember that game.

P.S.: Neil Peart (wore 28, from memory). Could be wrong. It was 20-something. My next guess would be 25.

Maurice Rioli. There's a player I never got to see. You might recall J2R. After all the goings on when the Swans were chasing Maurice, I don't think he was ever the same player again. The name Peter Jess (his manager at the time), still makes my blood boil.

What are your recollections or anyone who remembers?

neil pert wore 24 kicked 3 gaols i think that game.i know it wasnt pleasent to watch. the last qtr anyway lol.
maurice wore number 27 and i agree after the swans "poached" him he was never the same player. but still had the skills[or but slower] that would put some players to shame today.if i remember the swans had signed rioli but at the last minute i think the swans reneged on the deal.
still it was good seing the general and the flea teaming up again.
micheal mitchell and peter wilson were playing their 1st season that year.what id give to have mitchell with us now at the feet of richo etc.

geoff clarke played who i think went on to play in the vfa after about 4 unsuccessful years at tigerland.

I remember sadly one worse than the eagles game from the same year (round 4 I think). 39 pts up at 3/4 time against Collingwood from memory. Kicked the first two goals in the first 5 minutes of the last quarter to put us up by 51 pts. Collingwood then kicked 10 straight and won by 10 pts .

1987 - Tony Jewell literally ripping his hair out in the coaches box during virtually every match. Wooden spoon. Carlton won the flag.
Geez thanks j2r for bringing that triffic year back into everyone's conscious ;D

I was getting closer. ;D

I recalled that Maurice changed from 17 to another number after the deal with the Swans fell through.

I knew it had a '7' in it, but wasn't quite sure whether it was 7 or 27.

Thanks for that J2R.

Diggler brought this one up on a thread earlier this year. Until then I had been deluding myself that it wasn't true at all. That's probably the worst one of the lot MT.

Although Round 22 of that year against the Bears, that gave us the wooden spoon, was not a good one either. :'( :'( :'(

I'm having Foxtel put on this weekend. If they ever have a magnificent flashbacks segment, focusing on 1987, I think I'll be re-arranging the sock draw that night. ;D

From that horrible era I have a signed Tiger ball either 87 or 89 like thats ever gonna be worth anything... it barely has sentimental value ::) That sort of stuff is why Tiger fans are so vocal these days...
Anyway I'll find that ball one day and try and read some of the 'names' on there. :(

Ah 1987!

Alan Bond become President - albeit for a short period. Then Neville Crowe took the reigns.

Terry Wallace, played for us. Did nothing, and cost the club a fortune.

Some other names: David Palm, Trevor Poole, stephen james, darren bower, Simon Clark, (MC 24 mentioned Darryl Cowie who played 7 games over two seaons and kicked 1 goal), Renato Dintinosante, peter farancis, Andy Goodwin (now at Wandin), Jeff Hogg, Michael Laffy, John Manton, Richard Nixon (RIP), Michael Thomson, Greg Straghan, Jim Jess, etc.

Wait for 88 ;D

your welcome TD.stayed tuned it only gets better ;D

btw mc24.rioli,s number was 27 so ya got the 7 right lol

MC24 and remember they did the same thing the next week against the swans with Capper kicking 6 goals in the last quarter on Laffy and the worst thing was I saw both games live. Its still brings back nightmares ;D

Don't remind me Diggler.

I recall TJ rationalising the way we were playing at the time by saying that perhaps we had too much skill 8) in the team and needed to balance things up with some more aggression, or words to that effect.

I remember listening to that game on the radio whilst driving home from Frankston. I even remember the roundabout in Dingley I was at when the siren went!

Isn't it funny how we never forget tragic things that happen in our lives.

I once watched a learned anthropologist on TV stating that the reason why we remember bad experiences is so we try to avoid them happening again! Well I went to every richmond home game from 87 to 89!

So much for that theory!

The Human body is seriously flawed! ;D

I was actually at that game. It was played at VFL park.

It was a silent ride home via public transport.

I think it was in 1987 a Richmond member tore up his membership in front of the players and coach going up the race at the end of the game. It got heaps of coverage on the news. He was one cheesed of supporter.

I felt like doing the same after Saturday nights 80 point belting. Luckly the memberships are now made of plastic and not cardboard like the good ol days.

The guy that tore up his membership was when KB was coaching us. Don't remember what year it was, they were all that @#$@%#$! bad! I can remember getting picked on at school cause Michael Laffy used to play for us. I was standing one week at Princes Park behind the goals when he kicked into the man on the mark (from a kickout!). Even the Richmond supporters started booing him.

The 87 season...I never forget any of those very low moments.

The only highlight that year, was beating the Dons at the G. Glen Hawker getting KO'd in the first quarter & Peter Wilson taking on 3 Essendon defenders to kick a great goal. From memory, Wallace bagged a beauty coming out of the centre.

Some clarification though. That Tiger supporter who tore up his membership, was infact in 92.
Wasn't his name Emmanual kjagfutnkjhfkahajkfhkjhg..poulos ?

No I think his surname was Papadimitriopolopovskirianopolous

1987 was the year i started my footy card collection... i think there was one of Michael Roberts (that pretty boy sports presenter) in a richmond outfit. Some good players were still around at that time, even though they were about ready to retire (Jess, Weightman, Lee). Unfortunately my Richmond footy card collection was pretty pathetic back then. I also have a signed footy from 1991/92, which looks a hell of a lot better than 1988 (things must've been really bad in the late 80s).

Also in 1990 I went to the Royal Melbourne Show, and Knighter was signing autographs that year... unfortunately I rocked up to the richmond tent when he had vanished on a toilet-break. I wound up with a Richmond poster and a Todd Menegola autograph. Whoopdee-*smile*-doo!

Remember watching that game against West Coast.Another 1 of our famous collapses in which we could not hold off & West Coast ran all over us.At 3/4 time I thought we were going to have a great year. How wrong I was.

Aghhh 1987, remember it well.

Yep there it is... layer of skin that was added to my growing thick skin !!

- Remember that commercial slogan " layer, upon layer, upon layer "
I would not have guessed it was going to relate to the RFC membership drive back then.
