I know this thread won't last but I hate seeing words that are continually spelled incorrectly - not just typos, but words you see over and over and over.

This is the first one:

DEFINITELY

There is no 'a' in definitely i.e. definately!

Sorry if I sound like a school teacher but this really irks me.

Feel free to add your own. You never know - you might learn something.

Re: The Spelling Thread

Separately is often spelled incorrectly.

madcow uses a , instead of an ' in many words ;D

Re: The Spelling Thread

i tell you what irks me..."your" instead of "you're"

and i think some people dont even realise there is such a word as you're

and the other one..."would of"..instead of "would have" or "would've"

i am the queen of typos but this stuff annoys me...only cos i wonder if people know the real word actually exists..

Too true Ronnit. "You're" might often be laziness but the "would of" does my head in too.

I'm fascinated by words and "spelled" had me reaching for the dictionary to see when it's appropriate to use and when spelt is. Seems they are similar, the former being Yankee English and the latter more Pommy English.

Good idea for a thread Freezer. It’s far better to make it about language in general rather than taking pot shots at individual posters. It’s interesting that those who do like to single others out never have a crack at their mates’ mistakes.

Loose for lose are always make my eyes prick up. :p

Anything missing ronni? ;)

Re: The Spelling Thread

for someone who raised the point about apostrophes, wouldn't it make sense to use them yourself.

I think we should also write this off as laziness. :hihi :hihi :hihi

Re: The Spelling Thread

"Off of" annoys me to. As when someone says "I got up off of the couch" or " I borrowed the lawn mower off of my neighbour".

Re: The Spelling Thread

Text message style is the worst, especially this new 'fashion' of mixing numbers for letters.

Read some comments on You Tube and you'll see what I mean.

I'm 4ever gr8ful 2 b a memba of da T1G3RS.

That is the one that has really manifested itself over the last few years and it annoys me too.

Or people that write signs (whether is be placards, advertising, menus, etc) and have no idea:

Re: The Spelling Thread

Scumton are the main culprits with bad spelling on banners.

Re: The Spelling Thread

I like your tag, Freezer, but why take it out on Brussel Sprouts?

Re: The Spelling Thread

Perhaps a dangerous thread to start with me in the vicinity, however my top peeve would easily be "alot".

There is no such word as "alot"!!!

It is "a lot" if there are many, or "allot" if you're doling something out.

Didn't Essendon once have "Bombres" on their banner?

Don't forget that Scumdon supporters are really Scumwood supporters with a touch of red. Same DUD level.
