Welcome to the 2015 PREmier Fighting Tiger Awards Thread.

There were some similarities between the 2015 season and the one that preceded it. Slow starts marred the beginning of both seasons and had fans and the media baying for blood early on, the Tigers were able to upset some of the teams at the top of the ladder in unexpected, thrilling victories and the annual disappointment of a first week exit from the finals. That said, the slow start didn’t last as long, there were bigger and better victories against 3 of the top 4 sides and although well beaten, statistically, we were in the elimination final with a chance to steal it until the final few minutes of the match. Although I see 2015 as a disappointment with a preliminary final berth a likely outcome if we had managed to beat the Roos, it was still another improvement over the previous season. Our final position on the ladder (5th), the blooding of new players in Lambert, McIntosh, Corey Ellis, Menadue, Drummond and McBean and the feeling of being safely ensconced in the 8 during the latter part of the season were all welcome improvements.

Let’s get down to the real business of this thread. The 2015 PREmier Fighting Tiger Award saw 1321 ballots cast by 127 Punt Road Enders over the 22 regular season matches. This is up by 243 ballots on the 1078 ballots cast in 2014. As is normal, there was a small reduction in the average number of ballots cast in the second half of the season (55.3) compared to the first half (64.2). Part of this was due to the normal large turnout at the polls after our round one victory against Carlton, where 95 ballots were cast (a new record, 8 more than the previous record set in 2012). The lowest turnout at the polls this season came in our round 19 loss to Adelaide, with only 40 ballots cast.

As always I like to acknowledge those who voted in all 22 rounds of the season:

Before we begin the countdown I will clarify some of the information that is provided for each Richmond player:

Total Games For Richmond The career matches for Richmond (incl. Finals)

Total Votes The total number of votes accrued throughout the 2015 season (2014 also shown).

Rounds Played The number of games played in the 2015 H&A season (2014 also shown).

Historic Position The players position in previous PRE Player of the Year polls (DNP = Did Not Place)

Average Votes/Round Total votes accrued / total games played

Highest Ranking (Round(s)) The highest ranking achieved and the round(s) that ranking was held.

Best Round (Votes) The round in which the player obtained the highest number of votes, which opponent the Tigers played in that round and the number of votes obtained.

Normalised Score (Rank) A score that normalises the votes to take out the ‘number of voters’ factor. This scoring system prevents players obtaining votes in ‘popular’ weeks from gaining an advantage. This is not official and just for your information. Theoretical maximum score is 100 – a player that got 3 votes on every ballot would score 100.

Richmond ‘Brownlow’ Votes (Ranking) This is also unofficial and for your information. It consists of a 3-2-1 voting system each week. This ranking tends to benefit players who are consistently in the top 3 players of the week.
Official Jack Dyer Medal Ranking
Most Votes From The PRE member(s) who supplied the player with the most votes and how many.

Drafted as a ‘free swing’ category B rookie in 2015, the 204cm cousin of Ivan Maric started this year learning his ruck craft in the TAC cup. By the end of the year he was a regular in the VFL where there were some promising reports in regards to his tap work. He will take some time to learn the game and how to impact matches, but with no cost to our list space and his size and athleticism, it is certainly worth it the risk.

Our first pick in the 2015 rookie draft, Jayden Short, played out the year in the VFL. Although I did attend a few matches at Punt Road Oval this season, I didn’t get to see much of Jayden in action. Early reports from others on PRE were very promising before an ankle injury led to the end of his season back in July. If the reports of his good work in the VFL are even close to accurate, we’ll certainly see Jayden given another year to develop at Tigerland.

A late pick for Richmond in the 2014 National Draft, Reece is a very interesting prospect. Drafted as an 18-year-old, 197cm, 104kg key forward prospect with good hands, he certainly stood out when at times when playing in the VFL this year. He is a big boy that can take a contested grab. The reason for his late draft position was also evident at that level, as he would occasionally bob up for a mark and a goal, but he clearly has very little athletic endurance and struggled to apply forward pressure. However, his skill set and his young age make him one to watch and I am looking forward to see how he develops. He is going to end up being a big unit, so if he can improve his tank, he could potentially become a power forward in the seniors.

It’s easy to forget the impact that Axel Foley had at Tigerland back in the late 2000s, where he finished in the top 5 in this award during its first 3 years, including winning it in 2007. What is easier to remember is his rotten luck on the injury front. 2015 proved to be another year where chronic injury prevented Nathan from playing a single match and at 30 years old, he decided to call it a day. I always loved watching Axel play. At his peak His ability to break the lines with his pace was a true highlight of watching the Tigers. Unfortunately, we only got witness him play in 154 matches at the top level, but he really showed the grit and determination it takes to go from a rookie listed player to one of the best on our list.

These annual reports on Matty Dea are starting to sound a little repetitive. Amongst our best in the VFL round after round, Matt is the victim of a very settled defensive back 6 at Tigerland. There is little more that he can do to prove his readiness for senior footy and reports from the VFL were consistently good, however it is clear where he sits in the pecking order. A total of zero matches at senior level in 2015 must be disappointing for Matt. Not entirely surprising Matty Dea was delisted at the end of 2015. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on a rookie list at some AFL club in 2016, if he decides to continue with footy.

Our second pick in last year’s rookie draft impressed many on PRE and within the club. His rebounding work and ability to accumulate possessions at VFL had many talking up ‘George’s’ changes at senior level. If he can learn a bit of composure and clean up his disposal a little, it looks like we may have a player that can contribute at the top level. He is still young and will be given time to develop in 2’s for now.

Our 4th round pick in the last National Draft, Dan Butler was touted as a small forward with a neat skill set. Needed in an area we could clearly improve in, Dan’s chances in 2015 were dashed by ongoing injury issues and we will have to wait for next season to see what he has to offer the side.

A player that could never fully establish himself during his three seasons at Tigerland, Ricky’s 2015 season was devastated by a horrific foot injury. The injury would ultimately lead to his retirement at only 27 years old, having represented the Tigers in 30 matches. It’s a bit of a shame that he never really got a clear run at it, with injury a consistent part of his career. His ability to play forward and back, he was a useful utility when fit, however his potential was never really fulfilled.
