I know we won 3 flags, but seriously how can we have cap issues, especially coming out of this year.
Lynch and Martin fair enough.
Jack and Edwards wouldn't be on the same high amount next year.
Houli and most likely Astbury retire.
Grimes and BigV would be on 500-600k.
Cotchin cant possibly be on 700k.
Bolton has to be priority number 1. 550-650k
Rioli trade bait
Chol see ya wouldn't be giving him more then 400k.
Cj sign 2yrs @ 400k.

But how can Geelong have Hawkins Dangerfield Cameron Selwood Stewart Tvoury Higgins Smith all under the cap has me fked.

It's a good question. We have overpaid the middle tier at some point.

But you look at Essendon in the 2000's, when Caracella, Heffernan and our own Dimma Hardwick were all shipped out due to cap issues, people refer to it as the end of the era. Geelong have done remarkably well to hold on to so many stars. It's a tough balancing act.

I also see us using most of the picks this draft because it releases pressure from the salary cap, bringing six top 50 picks in on bases wages is a hard reset of our cap postion. Six kids on maybe 130k each in total, is one top tier contract. Not only do we need to bring the youth in, we need to bring the cap into line.

This was in an article the other day, something about the medical sub causing issues for the salary cap because they are playing an extra player plus then players get bonuses for playing x amount of game, since this was introduced just before the season started its caused havok over the salary cap.

All clubs have to pay 95% of the cap year in year out. I know there's a fudge or two within the system where you can pay unders one year n make it up by paying overs the next, but everyone basically has to pay the players the same total amount each year.

Tigers players, 3 flags n prelim in the last four years get the same spending money as Carlscum or #Lolnorf. There's a massive gulf in paying for performance compared to paying for attendance, welcome to AFL socialism 101.
Essendrugs got torched way back when, because they believed the AFL was going to expand the cap by a large amount and it didn't happen, so they went into fire sale mode.
Colonwood got torched by the cap last year, because they thought they were going to win a heap of flags in 19 - 20 - 21 because of how good they nearly were in 18 and it didn't happen so they went into Franco Cozzo mode.

It's a massive juggling act keeping a successful list together, because apart from a handful of premium players most of the list are on moderate dollars during a premium era. First thing oppo clubs do is try to pull apart a successful team by eroding their mid tier core with offers of shekels that can't be matched.
Far easier to tear down what someone else has built than build your own under the AFL socialist system. The Moggies have been, dare I say it. Brilliant at keeping their players in contention over the last 18 years or so with three flags early on and still hunting now, even if not quite successfully.

Great read, you can see why getting the kids in this year makes sense from a cap perspective and a list development strategy.

Convinced we take our picks to the draft.
