Basketball

Great job Jackjumpers.

Good for Tasmania and good for national
sport in general I reckon.
Apparently 2023/24 NBL season had largest average attendance since 1996.

Would suggest quite a resurgence of the sport in Australia, that had faded away from the national consciousness since the halcyon days of the early to mid 90s.

Watched the game after ours. Elite. Intensity, skill and smarts.

The game has never been played at a higher standard in this country like this year.

Only just put two and two together Red, the origins of Chris Goulding of Melbourne Utd (and the Boomers).

Born in Launceston, son of local North Launceston footy legend, Steve.

Be a great homecoming to have him play for the JJs at some point. But the founding of the JJs has perhaps come a bit late for him. Given he is in the twilight of his career.

Speaks volumes about a lacklustre summer of cricket, and disenchantment with the AFL.
'Second tier' sports like Basketball & Soccer will never have a better chance to win the hearts and minds of the youth.

Very good point. Particularly regarding cricket. Given the dynamics are quite different now than the 90s, where the NBL now plays a summer season (previously played in the winter).

I think originally in order to exploit a less crowded summer sporting landscape. But, seems to work ok for them, where fringe players can double up and play the second tier national and regional comps during the winter season to develop their craft and earn some handy extra income.

Certainly here in TAS the community level still plays in winter as it’s main season though (and I assume this is the case around Australia). I wonder whether a summer switch would possibly work at this level, given there is an overlap in young kids playing footy codes and basketball (particularly Aussie rules). Would give more juniors a chance of doing both, as opposed to having to choose so early. And gives basketball a further competitive advantage at the participation level if they were to do that.

I have coached a lot of junior athletics and there is so much literature suggesting that for long term athletic development of juniors, keeping them playing a range of sports (as opposed to specialising early) well into their teen years, or even early 20s, in some cases gives them the best chance of maximising their potential. Unfortunately the dominant sports management style in Australia though doesn’t embrace this concept however.

Giddy with a weight lifted from his shoulder gets a triple double vs the Knicks, and the highest +/- rating for the team.

Somebody ….anybody….just beat Alabama.
Can’t see them getting past UConn. But stranger things have happened.

Wouldn’t be phased to see ‘bama win the lot though. Given they haven’t ever won it before. Always good to see a fresh winner on the champions list.

Pit's the 2 dominant teams and 2 dominant big men against each other. Should be great.

Olympic extended squad released. No Travers. No Galloway. Too many slow coaches. At least they had the sense to add Furphy. Especially feel for Travers - haven’t been the biggest fan in the past but this season his game has really matured. Damn shame.

Thought exactly the same.

Travers been outstanding for United this season. Offers more than Goulding and Delly.
