It is easy to forget the Alex Rance has only played 66 matches for Richmond and really only established himself in the senior team last season. In that time he has risen to the position of number one defender at the club, receiving the most potent forwards to mind from the opposition each week. His 2012 season started very well with excellent games against Carlton and Collingwood, however as the season progressed Rance’s form started to slide and he was touched up a bit by Pavlich and Petrie in the process. Rance and Grimes appear to have great chemistry when they a playing in defence together and the loss of Grimes made a notable impact to our defence as a whole and to Rance’s personal form as he was charged with shouldering more of the defensive load. With the Chaplin move from Port Adelaide appearing to be a done deal (according to the rumour mill) this will free up Alex to play a more appropriate role as second tall and allow him to provide run out of defence in the coming seasons. His 7th place finish would seem about right considering the vital role he played in the Tiger’s backline in every game this season.
