The less said about the Tigers' round 22 clash against fellow strugglers the Eagles the better. Richmond travelled to Subiaco to finish their season, a ground that they have had some success at in recent times. It was Ben Cousins' first game against his former club at their home ground and as announced just before the game, the final appearances of Nathan Brown and former Jack Dyer Medallist, Mark Coughlan. There was no excuses for the team to put in a lacklustre performance, but that is exactly what we got. The game was completely dominated by the Eagles as they moved the ball fluently with little pressure from the Tigers. It certainly appeared as if the Richmond cue was already in the rack for 2009 and the West Coast were able to run amok. In the second half the Tigers went goalless in the third quarter and only put up token resistance in the final quarter, in which they were still outscored by their opponents. I am not going to say any more about the match itself because it doesn't really warrant any further description. Us Richmond supporters will just have to take solace in our pick 3 in the upcoming National Draft. I look forward to the day that I look forward to September more than December.

In the voting this week Deledio again stood head and shoulders above his team mates. He has certainly run into some white-hot form in the last month or so and, as Rosy points out, no prizes for guessing the winner of this years PRE Player of the Year. The other major voter attractors included Cousins who could certainly prove valuable in 2010 as he is a clear leader in the midfield and stands out for his poise, skill and work rate in that part of the ground. Edwards also continued his good form under Rawlings and was duly rewarded in the polls.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in the voting this season.

Stay tuned for the Punt Road End Player of the Year Awards Thread in the coming weeks for a final analysis of all the players and the season that they have had.

2009 PRE Player of the Year - AWARDS THREAD

Welcome to the 2009 Punt Road End Player of the Year Awards thread.

It has been a difficult year for us Tigers supporters with another big build up culminating in a bitterly disappointing season and a 15th place finish on the AFL ladder. We should be used to it by now, but it still stings everytime.

Much has changed at Tigerland this season with the appointment of a new head coach in Damien Hardwick and a new CEO in Benny Gale. It will be interesting to see how things progress over the next few months leading into the 2010 season.

Without further ado, the 2009 PRE Player of the Year saw 1169 ballots entered over the 22 rounds. This is down about 14% on the 1365 ballots cast in 2008, probably due to the dismal season from the Tigers and voters protesting by not casting their ballots. This can be seen in the average voters per round which fell from ~58 in the first half of the season to ~47 in the second half.

As always I like to acknowledge those who voted in all 22 rounds of the season:

Before we begin the countdown I will clarify some of the information that is provided for each Richmond player:

Total Votes The total number of votes accrued throughout the 2009 season (2008 also shown).

Rounds Played The number of games played in the 2009 season (2008 also shown).

2008 Position The players position in 2008 PRE Player of the Year polls (change)

Average Votes/Round Total votes accrued / total games played

Highest Ranking (Round(s)) The highest ranking achieved and the round(s) that ranking was held.

Best Round (Votes) The round in which the player obtained the highest number of votes, which opponent the Tigers played in that round and the number of votes obtained.

Normalised Score (Rank) A score that normalises the votes to take out the ‘number of voters’ factor. This scoring system prevents players obtaining votes in ‘popular’ weeks from gaining an advantage. This is not official and just for your information. Theoretical maximum score is 100.

Richmond ‘Brownlow’ Votes (Ranking) This is also unofficial and for your information. It consists of a 3-2-1 voting system each week. This ranking tends to benefit players who are consistently in the top 3 players of the week.

Most Votes From The PRE member(s) who supplied the player with the most votes and how many.

Can I ask that everyone refrain from replying to this post until the awards ceremony is complete

Now with the formalities out of the way, let the 2009 countdown begin!

Dean Putt continued his development at Coburg in 2009 as project player for the Tigers. All reports suggest that he hasn’t set the world on fire at that level and really needs to use his size to impose himself more on the contests. 2010 shapes up as an important season for Putt and his future at the Richmond Football club. For a club crying out for decent big men, he will be given every opportunity to make it.

An injury during the preseason NAB cup spelled the end of the former skipper’s footy career as he struggled to find fitness as the season wore on. Sugar’s fitness combined with the Tiger’s pitiful season and subsequent focus on youth led to his retirement during the season. One of the few Tigers of recent years that had also played in a premiership team he was clearly well respected by his teammates and continued on in a coaching capacity after his retirement. Best of luck going forward Sugar and thanks for the captaincy during such dark years.

16 games in 4 seasons at Richmond may spell the end for Cleve if the reports that are currently circulating are to be believed. The signs were ominous from early on when Cleve couldn’t manage to break into the side even after the season-ending injury of Richo. Cleve appears to have all of the tools to make it at AFL level, he is big, takes a good mark and kicks pretty well. However it just appears that his desire to make it doesn’t match his physical gifts. Best of luck in the future Steamer.

After being delisted and picked up as a rookie in 2009 Gourdis had a mixed season playing at Coburg. He has shown real promise by displaying blistering pace for his size and kicking bags of goals. Unfortunately, he also suffered from injury and struggled to get on the park for part of the season. David is a classic project player that could really impact the AFL if he develops well. I would be surprised if the Tigers did not persist with him as a rookie in 2010.

Alroy Gilligan was picked up as rookie in the 2008 draft and started his career playing for the Coburg reserves. Reports from those matches were quite promising and regular appearances in the list of best players saw him promoted to the Coburg seniors towards the end of the season. Gilligan appears to show some promise and will be likely to retain his rookie spot in 2010 to continue his development.

After being picked up during the 2008 trade period from Port Adelaide, Adam Thomson struggled with injury and form throughout the 2009 season before finally making his debut with Tigers in round 21. With little to go on from such a season, it would appear that Thomson may struggle to consistently make the senior side. Having said that, his in and under style of game may suit the new coach, but time will tell. 2010 will is shaping up to be a pivotal year in determining Thomson’s future career at the Tigers.

As an unabashed Dan Connors fan 2009 proved to be more than disappointing. For a player that appears to have the courage and skill to make it at the top level, Dan continues to fall down through effort and selfish play. Having only played 6 games over the past 2 seasons his career, if it continues, will be on the line in 2010.

After injury ruined his 2008 season Andrew Raines came out in 2009 and appeared likely to be tried out for a new midfield role. Unfortunately, he sustained another serious injury after only 3 matches and played no further part in the campaign. Although he managed to come back to play for Coburg in the second half of the season, his form did not warrant a recall to the Richmond seniors. Andrew and his father were clearly displeased with this treatment and it now appears certain that after requesting a trade to Brisbane that Rainsey will be plying his trade for the Lions in 2010.
