Re: The 2008 Punt Road End Player of the Year Awards Thread

Well its time to have a look at the breakdown of the votes in the 2008 PRE Player of the Year Awards.

Over the 22 rounds of the season the PRE Player of the Year had 1365 ballots (up from 1281 in 2007) cast from 159 members (down from 189 in 2007).

First of all recognition of those PRE members who voted in every round of the 2008 season:

:clap
Fighting Fury
Tigermad2005
YinnarTiger
:clap

Now, some definitions to clarify all of the categories listed:

Total Votes The total number of votes accrued throughout the 2008 season (2007 also shown).
Rounds Played The number of games played in the 2008 season (2007 also shown).
2007 Position The players position in 2007 PRE Player of the Year polls (change)
Average Votes/Round Total votes accrued / total games played
Highest Ranking (Round(s)) The highest ranking achieved and the round(s) that ranking was held.
Best Round (Votes) The round in which the player obtained the highest number of votes, which opponent the Tigers played in that round and the number of votes obtained.
Normalised Score (Rank) A score that normalises the votes to take out the ‘number of voters’ factor. This scoring system prevents players obtaining votes in ‘popular’ weeks from gaining an advantage. This is not official and just for your information. Theoretical maximum score is 100.
Richmond ‘Brownlow’ Votes (Ranking) This is also unofficial and for your information. It consists of a 3-2-1 voting system each week. This ranking tends to benefit players who are consistently in the top 3 players of the week.
Most Votes From The PRE member(s) who supplied the player with the most votes and how many.

Now without further ado, let the 2008 countdown commence:

Jarrod spent the season on the rookie list for the Tigers, presumably as a backup defender after a solid year for Coburg in 2007. The solid form and lack of injury to our back 3 in Moore, McGuane and Thursfield meant that Jarrod was unable to make his debut for the yellow and black in 2008. Jarrod finished the season for Coburg early after sustaining an injury and may struggle to keep his spot on the rookie list in 2009.

Alex was picked up by the Tigers in the 2007 National Draft and started the year with the Coburg Reserves, before earning his way into the Coburg Seniors. By the end of the year he was one of the stand out performers in the Coburg line up, displaying tenacity, run and an ability to find the footy. I would expect to see Alex make his debut with the Tigers at some stage in the 2009 season.

Another Tiger cub to be picked up in the 2007 National Draft, Dean is currently doing his apprenticeship at Coburg. As a big man this may take a couple of seasons, but reports on his progress have been solid. Let’s hope the injury he sustained towards the end of the season doesn’t affect his preseason going into 2009.

Another injury troubled season prevented Danny from taking the field in the yellow and black in 2008. This makes 2 seasons in a row where Danny has failed to poll in the PRE Player of the Year Awards. Reports from Coburg suggest that Danny has put on some bulk to his light frame, has been playing solid footy and was pressing for senior selection towards the end of the season. Danny’s polished skills should ensure his survival this year and hopefully an injury-free, solid preseason should equate to a much improved 2009.
