2021 Draft Thread

And won't back away from it. The kids got talent but straight off the top of my head Sam Walsh is streets ahead of him.

Doerre's comparisons are shocking as well. Brutally bad. Good on him tho for making a profile for himself, clearly loves it and has passion.
Yeah can’t imagine clubs clamouring over Finn Callaghan if they believe the comparison in his write up.

How lucky are the Dogs get 2 Prize Key Forwards fall in their lap in a Premiership window thanks to academy and father son.

JUH last year Darcy this year.

They are looking to be setting up to be a dominant force for a while, especially with that quality in key Forward and ruck posts (JUH, Darcy, English, Naughton) , they just need a couple of quality defenders then hit the midfield for the next 2 drafts and pick for need thereafter and they are rolling.
They desperately need a ready made ruckman

Bit of a long one, but thinking this would be awesome if we could do it.

3 trades
Carlton - Trade Picks 8, 16 and 41 to Carlton for 6, 25 and Dow.
Carlton then trade 8 and 16 to Freo and get Cerra and 28 back

Saints - Trade our 1st next year for their 1st this year - reasoning is above

Dogs - Trade Picks 26 and 27 to the Dogs for 17 and a 2022 2nd.

We take picks 6, 7, 17, 25 and 45 to the draft this year, next year moved down the order from our 1st to the Dogs 2nd.
The 1st 4 picks this year will be a great opportunity to reset / rebuild on the fly.

What do people think? Should I take Blairs job? :rotfl2
Why move from 8 to 6? Is it worth it?
Sounds like it opens right up around 4 or 5, so may not be a big difference in quality.

What's in it for the Dogs?
Pick 26 equates to matching a bid at pick 18 (with 20% discount) so any bid until 18 they automatically use the next pick 27, right?
Roughly equal points but doesn't help them.

Darcy will be top 3. If he goes pick 3 and they match they need 2234 points x 80% so 1787. They only have 1025 from pick 17. Those 2 picks 26 and 27 give them 1432 which gets them a lot closer than where they were. If the Dogs don't find some points then the deficit comes off their 1st pick from next year. If they only have 17 (and that may get higher with the form they are on), then they are just over 700 points in deficit which will come off their 1st next year. Lets say Pick 17 again, suddenly becomes somewhere around Pick 46-47. They need points this year somehow which will only come from pick trading, either splitting their 1st to something better, bringing later picks from 2022 into 2021 or trading players or a mix of all 3 (which I suspect they will do). There is a lot of gains for the Dogs in doing what I suggested.

The Carlton one I'm not sure about, but heard they were after our 2 picks as they want them to negotiate with Freo (Ie, they think they can get better value by trading the picks 1st and then trading for Cerra rather than just trading directly with Freo). Its a variable one that could work well, or may not also. Depends on who we are after really.

Looking like we might not even get the Championships in. If not it's going to be a lottery. These poor kids, as if year 12 and trying to get drafted wasn't stressful enough. Hopefully they find a way to hold them, even in a hub post-exams, pushing the draft back into December.

Some rough thoughts that should not be taken as anything other than such:

Horne-Francis/Daicos/Darcy at this stage are the top 3, with Callaghan looking like 4.

Then we have:
Gibcus - high-marking key defender.
Andrew - super-athletic very skinny versatall at 200cm/70kg. Could be anything, including the first Sudanese superstar I've banged on was coming one day soon. Will take a few years to put on enough size, though.
Erasmus - 188cm mid/forward with class who wins clearances and kicks goals.
Ward - 181cm rounded mid. Perpetual motion machine, just keeps getting the footy.
Hobbs - 183cm manchild inside mid. Strong build.
Goater - 190cm athletic mid who moves well in traffic and is quick and clean on the loose ball.
Sinn - dashing half-back with a penetrating left foot.
Draper - 185cm, see Erasmus. Better athlete. Strong aerially. Improver.
Roberts - 183cm inside mid. Smart. Not the quickest across the ground but is sharp between the ears. Poor man's Hodge?
Rachele - talented small forward/mid, 180cm with good hands and a great kick. Can get it and knows where the sticks are.
Wilmot -183cm, born half-back-flanker. Not as flashy as Sinn but rangy, tough and better aerially. More likely to win the ball back and routinely humiliate Flash Harry half-forwards. Already a fave of mine, reckon he's just about a certainty to make it.
Sonsie - explosive, damaging 181cm mid/forward. Goes missing a bit and not the strongest in the contest at times but uses the ball really well.
Johnson - 192cm outside mid. Good ball user and can get it.
in who knows what order. That's only a rough idea of some names from my limited viewing. There are plenty I haven't seen at all so this is far from complete.

A total pin the tail on the donkey guess at a top-10:
1. Darcy (WB match bid)
2. Daicos (Coll match bid)
3. Horne-Francis (North)
4. Callaghan (Adelaide). Very classy, get ready for Pendlebury comparisons.
5. Gibcus (GWS). Think they'll be looking for a key back to replace Davis and partner Taylor.
6. Sinn (GC). They need some dash and class off half-back with Harbrow retiring and Oleg turning it over.
7. Erasmus (Freo, pick traded from Carlton for Cerra). Local, arguably best available here, makes sense.
8. Draper (Hawks). Could go Sonsie or Goater or even Andrew but Draper appeals as a versatile x-factor type.
9. Ward (St Kilda)
10. The Mighty Tiges. If it panned out like this and I was at the table I'd be debating Andrew, Goater, Sonsie and Rachele.

Grain of salt, people. Unlike Doerre, I don't comment on players I haven't seen, much less rate them. I did see Knevitt, Chesser and MacDonald v Metro - I saw them get flogged. Not judging them off one game so left them out.

I must have slept in.
Did we beat Hawthorn?

100% best available, quick reset , if needed we trade the next year for needs or if we flop go hard at draft again

If no Championships then I guess the athletic testing becomes even more important?

Of the 4 you mentioned, 3 have been touted as high potential with consistency an issue.
I can see the advantage in aiming high with this pick.
Will be interesting if the club plays it safe or goes for potential

I don't follow. Because of our pick being at 10? That's due to the two bids being matched at the top. It would be 9 if St Kilda beat Freo, but I don't think they will.
Ah got it.
Collingwood pick to GWS.
Go Hawks/St Kilda

I think they simply have to find a way to hold them, for clubs' and players' sake.

Exams will be done by mid-November. The draft last year was on December 8. They could take all the kids into a hub, do the testing while in quarantine, play 2-4 games over a week or two, and have the draft in mid-December.

Due to limited in depth, hard data on youngsters available due to 2 seasons of cooties disruption. Might be the best option to apply a bit of the old scatter gun approach to this years draft.
Probably only three or four " elite " prospects this year followed by a raft of possible potential unknowns. So rather than trying to ace the draft by trading up to one or two really early Hail Mary picks. Spread the load wider n retain as many decent picks as possible and rely on your quality development to grow the youngsters to be their best.

They will be played. I have no doubt about it Most likely in Hubs post exams

Considering we are making a play for contested ball winners in the trade period, I can’t see how and why we would overlook Hobbs.

What if Mac Andrew projects as best available in four years' time?
Then he'd be developed perfectly.
200cm ruck / key forward, in four years time at 22y.o. you'd expect him to bulk to around 90 plus kegs, probably topping to around the 100 in maturity.
Kid shows the athletic ability n talent then if he's learnt the game structure n focus required for AFL level footy, look out.

Probably 95% or more of talented kids need that 3 or 4 years in the system before any sort of definitive call can be made about the capacity for AFL footy. Most of the drafting is basically like trying to pick future Melb cup winners at the yearling sales.

I've had similar thoughts, Maso. Depends how confident they are of their ratings.

Yeah, I posed the question in answer to Mr B saying do a quick reset. Andrew won't be helping us win a flag in the next couple of years but could be a star 4+ years down the track.
