Pick 53: Jack Graham

Ellis was 2nd round with 5 years at 600k.

Graham will surely be in the Matt White/Luke McGuane zero compo bracket. I think they were 2-3 years at $350k which is about right for Graham if he can attract anything at all.
Firstly we got shafted with the Ellis compo bc that wanker Barrett kicked up a stink about it in the leadup daring the afl to give richmond the reigning premiers another first round pick in compo.

Secondly, Graham is in our top 25% of paid players, absolutely no way he's leaving on $350k per year. We'll get a band 2 or whatever it is they call it

Um, yeah Damien Barrett had zero influence on what compo we received for Ellis.

Compo is a calc and not about feelings and previous contracts.

Graham will be getting a pay cut from us if he stays and won’t be getting any deal elsewhere that is going to have him in the top 25% of paid players at other clubs.

Get yourself nice any comfy for a late round pick at best or no compo at all which will be the correct outcome based on what he’ll likely get elsewhere.

I dont think this is correct- the different formula bit.
Agree. UFA compo is worse on average because a players age is taken in account.

UFA’s on average are older than RFA’s which is why compo might look worse, but I think there is no formula difference.

He started a snowball of sentiment and the afl knew the optics of the the reigning premier receiving a first rounder wouldnt look great. It was the talk of the industry in that last 2 weeks before it happened - the rat did his job in creating a buzz about it and making it a talking point.

Its actually not just about calculations, they purposefully add a number of factors into the equation to leave enough of a grey area that they can manufacture an outcome. We all know the afl love to manufacture an outcome. Brando got a slightly better deal than Motlop, motlop = first rounder, brando = second rounder. We were stitched up

Regardless, Graham won’t achieve numbers anywhere near what Motlop & Ellis received, and will likely not get a contract value at half what those two received.

Once he does it’ll be no compo

Ok that's what I read when I researched before. What is undisputed is that historically unrestricted free agents rarely gain first round compensation, I could only see one in this list.

Doesn't the 25% just qualify Graham as UFA. The compensation depends on age and new offered contract and what other secret herbs and spices the AFL decide to use?

Yeah it shows hes a highly paid player and contrary to what most fans think, a player in his peak years that would be wanted by more than one team (in this case 2 or 3) will not go backwards in wages, certainly wont get offered a wage that is the average afl wage these days. He'll get paid reasonably well and we'll get reasonable compensation. happy to revisit this at seasons end

You'd think an end of 2nd or 3rd rounder which in our case appears it would be close to the same pick. Reasonable based on where he's at, not on the promise he showed in his first year. Was #56 pick so would be a net positive over the long-term.

Not sure this will be true re: Graham not going backwards in wages.

He was in a rich vein of form and Carlton came knocking with a big contract last time.

His form (and ceiling that he will get to) have so far dropped off since then.

Suspect he might go backwards in wages. Absolute best we might get an end of second rd pick. Suspect it won't be that much though.

Just looking at the bands for free agency and going by the 2023 player earnings x number of primary players I was able to do a simple rough calculation of the kind of salary most likely required per band.

Needs a min. 2 year contract and there are bonus points for age which aren't included.

Band 1 - 1st round pick = $900+k

Band 2 - end of 1st round pick = $700+k

Band 3 - 2nd round pick = $550+k

Band 4 - end of 2nd round pick = $400+k

Band 5 - 3rd round pick = $300+k

Richmond band 6 regardless of contract size

Tom Morris says Wet Coke want Jackie G.

How's my idea: Graham + Baker + X ? round picks for Harley Reid. Deal or no deal.

How TF did we get better compo for Cholly than we got for 2 time premiership player at prime age Bobble Ellis ??
