Maurice Rioli Jnr

Lol you clearly have no idea, not at any point was he a project player, was a highly rated junior who Freo was desperate to pinch off us.
If it wasn't for F/S he would have been drafted in the top 30 without a doubt.
This is wrong IMO, watching him live in a few junior games there was a lot of hype for not a lot of substance, leading up to draft I thought he was more a rookie selection except he had the Rioli name and was bid on knowing Richmond would have to take him higher than expected.
In an intimate meeting after he was drafted Matty Clarke said he was thinking and hoping for the same.
Definitely a project player in a lot of areas, professionalism, fitness, (these two things still need a fair bit of work),
From my perspective he came to the draft as a great tackler but not the ability to win the ball and not a prolific goal kicker either.
He has only just now, (the last 2 weeks), started to look likely.

Richmond matched Essendons bid of pick 51 in the 2020 draft.
if he was “highly rated” you could have expected a pick to come in earlier for him.
Freo had picks 14, 27, 50 and 54

Agree with everything except the last sentence. He showed massive improvement last year, for those who were watching.

Sorry Coburg
A massive improvement on what exactly? What were you watching? coming off a low base in 2022. 2023 wasn’t a season to write home about. If that was a massive improvement he was lucky to be still under contract.
Funny what people see. If you look at the figures, his totals and averages all went backwards in 2023 compared to 2022.

The VFL.

All the indicators were there. He was playing in and out of the midfield, and he had burst, evasiveness and, critically, he was using the ball well.

You could see it coming. He's showing it in the firsts now.

Still massive upside to come.

Oh apologies.
Yeah he has shown improvement but still a way to go yet.Fingers crossed the trajectory keeps going upward.

Can’t agree he’s only shown something the past fortnight. MJ showed plenty at the end of the ‘22 season. He was one of the highlights in the final loss to Brisbane. Had hamstring issues last year that curtailed his development.

He played very well in the elim final that why I had such high hopes in 23 , as you say his injuries set him back some

Pffffft. Another nothing game. Fumbles
8 disposals. 1 tackle. 2 turnovers. 6 clangers. 73% TOG
A SuperCoach score of….25
Thats not even a B- standard.

This is the first mention he gets on match day? He was worse than plenty of others copping a hammering.

Willing to give him another week as he’s been ok in previous weeks
Yeah, only ok. Too many thought he was the next coming of his father.
Some of the superlatives that were used for a reasonably decent game. And I mean reasonably decent.
He gets marked a lot easier than some of the other players

Agree, he had an atrocious season last year. Fell away immensely on the end of his 22 season. Has shown immense improvement this year at times but needed to.

With the importance of smalls at an all time high, we have properly the worse 2 in the comp.
He drops a shipload of marks and hus fumbling isn't "just today' it's always.

***he fumbled the last goal against Sydney

When your team sucks playing as a small pressure forward is a lonely place especially when you dont get much of a chop out and there is no real Key Forwards to feed off.

Was a pretty tough day at the office for all our small forwards in Campbell, Mansell & Rioli Jnr.

Maurice tried hard but definitely his worst for a while. Not alone there though.

This week he was not up to his newfound standard but to be fair to him the ball service to the forward half was putrid and we had so many gaps all around the field all he could do was harry the opposition
