I was really taken aback recently while listening to Smooth FM. A voice on the radio started to tell me about how mobile phones could give me cancer and that I should buy this company's shiny crap because the World Health Organisation backed them up. Really? The WHO confirmed that mobile phones cause cancer? Why doesn't everyone know this? For the record here is a little of what the WHO really said: "The June 2011 WHO Fact Sheet (Number 193) on mobile phones and health, which takes into consideration the IARC categorization, states: “A large number of studies have been performed over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones pose a potential health risk. To date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.”"

And that is from the report that these snake oil salesmen say "backs up" the need for their plastic junk and that they are advertising constantly on national commercial radio. Does it beggar belief that this is okay, or is it just me?

Which brand are they backing up as all phones produce different radiation levels?

(btw, I reckon Smooth FM is as bad as Gold FM with their 24 hour playlist....same songs everyday)

Actually, I am concerned now. If you don't use their product, the radiation makes your face go red, but if you do, your face is blue.

A steal for only $50.

It's as bad as those Heart Foundation approval ticks.

I'm with you there too TF.

That is a blatant money grabbing disgrace.

I am a member of the local Apex club, and often volunteer miy time to collect for groups like the Salvos, Red Cross etc.

The Heart Foundation asked me to assist with their collection this year. I said no, purely based on some of the foods I now see those ticks on. McDonalds ???

Featured on Today Tonight syas it all :hihi

I know, and the fact that it is probably the most prominent thing on their website says even more. But with that show and its equally odious cousin on nine demanding enough ratings to stay on air doesn't that mean that there are enough people who believe this crap in our community to keep them going? And they vote.... :-[

People bought 'Powerbands'. Enough said.
Fair enough, people are nuffies. But this ad states quite clearly at the beginning that the WHO released a report saying there was "a link between mobile phone usage and brain cancer". That is completely false. As I stated above the report says "To date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.” That is a bit more serious than power bands don't you think?

Kills 99.99% of all germs. yeh right. According to what?

Problem is, our advertising is basically self regulated.

I agree totally. The claim is ridiculous. Anyone who believes a plastic cover can help them is being grossly misled.
If no one complains then they will continue to get away with it.
My point is, people are stupid.

I had a look and there doesn't seem to be anyone to complain to in any case. ACMA and Andvertising Standards websites both seem to be saying that there are no requirements for accuracy in advertising unless you are selling health products (bit of a stretch for a phone cover) or flogging stuff to kids....oh or using porn. It doesn't fit any of those categories so it's okay? Crazy stuff. I've reported it to the Australian Skeptics Society but I don't imagine that will help much....wouldn't it be cool if we had a Media Watch type show for all the bogus claims of advertising?
