My first thread (I think)

Anyway...

I have been following the US elections closely (got sucked in while in Vietnam and CNN was the only English channel)

I was wondering whether anybody else thinks that...

1. Barack Obama is the only hope of the free world.

2. Hilary Clinton is a power hungry *smile* that only pretended to forgive her husband for political reasons.

3. John McCain is an evil warmonger

???

:clap :clap

I've heard a bit about the Yankee Presidential Circus on ABC radio. It seems a heap of hoohaa and a massive waste of money and resourses. My uninformed perception is that Obama is a breath of fresh air and the best hope for peace and world unity and if I was voting he'd get mine. Hilary Clinton typifies all I can't stand about American politics. Yankee clap trap. I think she could be very dangerous and her ego concerns me. I don't have any opinion about McCain. He seems a bit of a non-event compared to the other two.

I've been sucked in a bit as well. The arcane systems that differ across the country are quite fascinating (if illogical).

1. Perhaps. Barack is the best bet to beat McCain at any rate. He is charismatic and seems to bridge the divide between many voting demographics.

2. That might be a bit harsh on Hillary. Presidential candidates are by definition power hungry.

3. Perhaps, but both his strength and weakness is that he isn't enough of an evil warmonger for the loony elements of the republicans.

A fascinating story from John McCain.

This is his experiences that will influence his potential presidency.

God help us if he succeeds. (sp fixed I think)

Watch the video and be scared.

Yes we can!!

Rosy, all pollies have egos.

Barrack or Clinton? Well if I say Clinton I'll be accused of being a racist. And if I say Barrack I'm sexist. 'tis a good reason to do as I've done since '75 - refrain from voting. :)

I'm quite aware of that poppa.  :hihi  We all do, and we all deal with them differently, but that doesn't change the fact that Hilary's would concern me.  To be honest I don't have enough interest to have an informed opinion about much to do with proceedings in Yankeeland.  I just hope they get it right and whoever is in charge puts the world welfare in front of their own self importance

If Billary annoys you as much as she does me,then you make get a chortle out of this.

1) Barak is only slightly older than the beer in my fridge, yet he is the hope for the free world?? He sells hope and vision, but hardly any policy, especially on the foreign policy area. Personally I think he needs more experience, and should have targeted 08 as a VP run.

2) Hillary power-hungry? Of course she is, but name me one politician who wants to lead who isn't. The reason people treat her differently is because she is a woman, and women being power hungry is vulgar, while its assertive in men. Has had limited experience too, which isn't a help.

3) Completely disagree on McCain, and I think he is likely to win now. Has a better grasp on the centre than Hillary or Obama, has the experience both lack, and most importantly, has shown he will stick to his guns (one of the few US poli's who hasn't run for the hills denying they supported the Iraq War when they did).

Disagree. I find it as vulgar in Georgedubbya as I do In Billary (thanks for that one evo).

Then why is no one knocking Obama's ambition? Its not like he has got a long Senatorial or State based legislative career to back up his claim "I can do best for America". He thinks he can and he wants the job.

Just like Howard, Rudd, Kennett, Costello, Brumby, Beattie, etc... most leaders thrive for power. Personally I want this, because if they are not prepared to crawl over bodies and do the hard yards to get the job, how good are they going to be when you get a 1939 like situation with some Nazi freak dropping his punk card on you?

Nothing wrong with ambition, but lets not pretend every person in this race (including "aw shucks" Huckabee) has an absolute lust for power.

I'm not presuming to speak for others but I personally don't judge people on race or gender. I'd have nothing against a female leader or a black leader or even a female black leader.

You should jump on CNN or FOX News. Exist polls are nearly always split up by race and sex. Its interesting to listen to for no other reason to see how different our political system is to the one in the US.

i was drinking bourbon like it was going outa style at Jimmy Millers corner bar in New Orleans last year, when i struck up a conversation with two fellas from Ohio.

They were deadset against the war and really anti-bush. however they were sort of middle aged conservatives. They reckoned the US wasnt ready for a black president, yet even more unready for a woman as pres.

I asked them when they thought they would be ready and they shrugged their shoulders.

To me, that means they are ready now.

However these final primaries fall, it will be a very different political landscape in the US.

Bring it on.

Not interested in how others' thoughts are perceived, I was saying what I think myself.

His only problem is his grasp on the centre will risk alienating large tracts of the Republican base vote.
