Worst off season ever

As much as I understood the logic in seeking the No3 draft pick

As much as I understand the players desire to go on holidays 'unmarked'

The reality is that tonight we head into the worst ever off-season that I can recall :'(

The bright-siders will talk about Benny Gale, and the new coach Hardwick - however - nothing will wash out the stain of the 2009 season.

This game tonight forces us to face reality:

a. Our Captain and Acting Captain can not inspire the team
b. The huge majority of players would not get a game at another club
c. We are stuck with 3-4 deadwood because of contracts
d. We can't sack 15 - yet we easily could/should
e. for all the promise of youth and future - the reality is that they don't have the consistency nor the endeavour to truly raise to premiership level
f. Our forward line has been limp for the last half of the season. For the second year in a row Riedwoldt has shown how over-rated and ineffective he is
g. Our backline is the laughing stock of the AFL - undersized, shocking foot/hand skills and an uncanny knack of turning over or giving away frees of the most basic pathetic nature
h. Our midfield can't handball or create an effective block/pass

......... and for all the talk about getting rid of Richo - or even Cousins - it's not even worthy of a response.

What a ridiculous, ridiculous suggestion.

Yes - there will be propoganda over the summer:

fastest tan ever run, training the house down, incredible enthusiasm, great skills.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

They may be young - but they play like old dogs.

Bring on Spring Racing Carnival.

My beloved Tigers will get my money in 2010 (unless they sack Richo)

But they won't get my belief :(

Unfortunatlely coming from the brightest of brightsiders I have to agree.

I'll give my hard earned for myself and my wife and three kids next season too.

But I'm*smiled* if I know why!!! They've given us nothing tonight to go into 2010 pre season with. :vomit

I would be sitting each player down who has a contract who is dead wood and tell them if they have any integrity they will forsake the last year of their contract and take a hike. If they refuse, tell them they are not welcome at Punt Rd and to cool their heels at Coburg. That means yu Sanchez and Schulz.

As for the rest, have a few good weeks rest because pain is on the menu come Oct 30.

Just a horrible year from start to finish...that was the mess that Wallace and Miller built. 2003 - 2008 will be none as the wasted years, years when the list was left in the most horrible state possible.

i wouldn't be reading too much into tonight

team selsction was very unusual - we went to the wide spaces of subiaco with the slowest team we have played in years
we got smashed in clearances early on while tuck sat on the bench - then when they brought him on they got him to tag their back pocket

....and to give Cogs the chop when I could name at least 10 other players more deserving.

Edwards - never was a footballer, never will be. Undersized with a pea brain. How bad are we when he is named in our best?
JON - please leave now.
Schulz - ditto.
Simmonds - zero athleticism, zero football skill.
McMahon - supposedly good by foot! :rofl
Thomson - a dime a dozen footballer.
Polack - never really rated him. Playing with enthusiasm but having no impact.
Hughes - Schulz mach2.
Graham - a 1990's ruckman in a 2000's game
Newman - never should have been captain and provides nothing that half a dozen others don't also, but better.

I wish Hardman the best, I really do, but I see little to get enthusiastic about for at least 2 -3 years.

I agree - very hard to draw too many conclusions from tonight. Just a "meaningless win" for the Eagles that will potentially deny them pick 6 and drop them to pick 7 - the fools!

How many seasons have we actually had in the last 10 years, when by round 22 we are clearly the worst team in the league, but aren't on the bottom, or even in priority pick range when we desperately needed it.

I thought your topic was "Worst Season Ever" and I was all ready to agree. And yea Wayne, I was thinking the same thing today. If ever a team needed priority picks...but yet again another team will waltz off with players in front of us.

I agree that its the worst season I can ever remember but primarily because I don't think anyone saw it coming and so no-one was prepared. Some of the displays this year were simply awful and that was well before our end of seasn beltings. But good to see the blade factor lift us up a bit before we sank deep into the slime.

Also "IF" McMahon had kicked a point then we would have had the No 1 draft pick. Unfair observation but bloody typical of McMahon and the club this year.

If Wallace is no longer on the payroll, I'd be happy enough for him to do a warts and all interview about the reasons for our shocking season. Sure, it'd be a biased perspective but it's difficult to saddle up for 2010 without having some sort of explanation.

It would be a complete waste of time.

Perhaps, but it's not about blame. I'd like to hear something more concrete than 'Wallace lost the players', 'the gameplan was too complex', 'the list is full of duds' etc.

170 points combined losing margin compared with this year's 270. And at least Richo was on the field in 2004.

Final months..gotcha. Yeah pretty bad this year. Overall 2004 sticks in my head though like a shard of glass. I still think Richmond played it's worst football ever (that Ive seen) in 2004. But you're right this month has been ...errr....not good.

Yeah not the best wording, sorry. 2004 & 2009 provide a fair argument against sacking coaches right in the middle of a season. Hopefully Hardwick and the club have seen what they needed to see.

Tend to agree generally, these last 4 weeks (which are fresh in the mind of course) have been the most stupefying and embarrassing to watch from a supporter perspective IMO. Feeling rather deflated and pessimistic... but it is only a game after all!

I'm hoping for a bit more than the stated 10% improvement for each player/team next year as part of DH's 'blueprint' going forward!
