Travelling Tigers to rest stars

Richmond - facing a trip to Geraldton, more than 400 kilometres north of Perth, this week for a practice match against Fremantle - has considered resting Matthew Richardson and several other star players.

The Tigers were consigned to the trip across the continent after losing to Melbourne in the first round of the Wizard Cup competition last weekend. They are now wrestling with the problem of wanting to be competitive yet not risking vulnerable players in a practice match.

Football manager Greg Hutchison said yesterday that the Tigers would split the trip over two days. They leave Friday lunchtime, reaching Perth about 1pm local time. They will train at Subiaco and stay overnight in Perth before going to Geraldton on a charter flight the following day to play.

The Tigers will again stay in Perth on Saturday night, flying back to Melbourne on Sunday.

Geelong won its first-round match against the Western Bulldogs, but the reward is a trip to Cairns to play Brisbane. The Cats' football staff met yesterday to make sure they covered all aspects of the trip, especially coping with the expected heat and humidity.

Geelong football manager Garry Davidson said yesterday that it may have been fortunate that the team played in trying conditions against the Bulldogs. "Given it was so hot and humid here on the weekend, it was a good precursor," Davidson said.

The Cats will be allowed to play two extra players off the bench under the special rules for Wizard Cup games at hot-weather venues.

Davidson said the medical staff, the fitness staff and the coaching staff had drawn up a list of issues. "We've got good people. The change rooms are air-conditioned and there will be industrial fans on the bench."

The Cats will also use cool vests, ice, cool tanks and extra rotation of players to combat the heat.

Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison said the decision on whether to play Richardson depended on assessing his need for more work against the risks of a long flight.

AFL injury research over several seasons has shown that long flights leave players more vulnerable to hamstring strains and other soft-tissue injuries and Richardson has had had a history of hamstring problems.

Hutchison said the composition of the Richmond squad had been discussed yesterday morning and would be looked at tomorrow before decisions were made.

Ruckman Greg Stafford was unlikely because he had considerable game time in the match against Melbourne.

Players with existing injuries - such as skipper Wayne Campbell and Justin Blumfield - would also remain at home.

One probable inclusion is Martin McGrath, drafted from South Fremantle.

Carlton and Western Bulldogs also face long trips, the Blues playing Sydney in Coffs Harbour, while the Bulldogs go to Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley to play Port Adelaide

RICHMOND will board four separate flights and stay two nights in Perth this weekend - all for one practice match against Fremantle.

The Tigers' arduous trip to Geraldton will stretch beyond 50 hours, and the players have been scheduled to play in the afternoon heat for their troubles.

Several stars could be rested for Saturday's hitout in country Western Australia, with the club wary of putting too many players through the hectic schedule and long flights.

The match will start at 3.30pm because the ground doesn't boast sufficient quality lights.

The average temperature in Geraldton at this time of year is 33C, but the forecast is for 28C on Saturday.

"It will be right in the middle of the heat. We'll take all the ice vests and get as much water over there as we can," Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison said.

The trip to Geraldton, a town of 20,000 420km north of Perth, will start at 11.55am on Friday and finish late afternoon on Sunday.

Richmond will train at Subiaco Oval on Friday afternoon and stay overnight in Perth. The team will catch a one-hour charter flight to Geraldton on Saturday morning, arriving less than three hours before the game.

The Tigers will board a charter flight back to Perth soon after the match. After spending Saturday night there, they will return east.

"It's going to be a fairly big couple of days," Hutchison said. "But we see it as a good opportunity for all the young boys to get together and have a trip."

Geraldton has never hosted an AFL practice match, although it was the venue of a WAFL match in the mid-1990s.

The ground boasts a small concrete stand and is ringed by grassed hills. Organisers are hoping for a crowd of 10,000, with 2500 tickets already sold.

The Tigers are still unsure if Matthew Richardson will make the trip, but it appears unlikely. "We'll take as good as what we've got. A few blokes won't be going because of the duration of the flight and all that," Hutchison said.

"We'll take a fairly young side. It's a good opportunity to play a few rookies and guys who didn't get a run in the Wizard Cup."

Hutchison said the Tigers had no concerns about the state of the ground.

"Fremantle and West Coast went up there last week and had a couple of looks," he said. "The AFL's not in a position where they send us to poor grounds any more."

I doubt the likes of Richo, Campo, Blumfield (those with or a history of leg/groin related complaints) will make the journey. Add to that list Dutchy, dragga, duncan, krakouer, rodan, zantuck, hall and a few of the newer guys who missed friday night through injury. I'm defintiely not expecting us to have a good scoreboard result given our outs and the safari-like trip. If we just get a closer-knit side from them being together for 3 days away from outside influences, gametime for the young guys and no injuries then I'll be very happy.

I can appreciate the AFL trying to take the game to regional areas of Australia, but f**k a duck, it would be easier to play in antartica at Mawson's Hut.

The AFL have to realise that if they structure these matches in shitsville, they will get second string teams playing, and this is not, I am sure, what the AFL hoped for when planned this match.

So to all those living in Geraldton - the bloke with red hair is Craig Biddiscombe, and we can't understand either how he is on an AFL list ??? ;D

LMAO, i think we should go to Geraldton with all our best players, King, Pettifer, Mills, Biddiscombe, Vardy etc and "accidentally" forget them there and leave without them. And then let's "hope" that they find their way back to civilisation.
