I know the AFL gets a lot of things wrong but the improved point value for father sons and academy prospects plus the ability to trade future picks has certainly meant that the trade period has been more active than normal.

Don't say this very often but well done AFL.

The trading of future picks will only magnify the difference between the clubs that get their drafting right compared to the ones that don't. Those clubs that put in the work to analyse the strength of the pool of upcoming draft prospects two and 3 years ahead will do well, those clubs that simply rely on the generic statistics that are available to everyone for the next draft only will get burnt.

We will know in about 4 years time who has done the best, the rewards for getting it right will be big and the punishment for getting it wrong will be bigger than before.

thats true, but clubs have vastly improved when it comes to drafting and tend to get it right more often these days.

Gold Coast going red hot at next years draft. Traded in melbournes first (likely top 8) and ours, Ports and Freos 2nds as well as their own, so before any trades next year they already have 6 picks in the first 35 or so picks. Either have some good academy kids next year or really rate next years draft.

If that was the case then there would be a different Premier every year and every club would play in a Grand Final every 10 years - this is clearly not the reality.

The current advantages will be magnified and the desperate gamblers will have more opportunity to lose their shirts.

The "Banking" of draft picks to secure academy players should not be underestimated, just wait for a couple of years before the whingeing of the Victorian clubs begins as they finally figure out the consequences of allowing the "Cherry Picking" of these players.

It will also add to the existing gulf between the haves, who can afford to invest more into analysing future drafts, and the have nots. Not convinced it's a great move
